North Dakota Republicans Had More Delegates Than North Dakota Democrats

When the North Dakota Democrats announced that Barack Obama would be speaking at their state convention, and that they’d be holding the event in the Alerus Center, many (including the snobby elites on the Fargo Forum editorial board) were quick to issue haughty statements about the surging state Democrat party and demoralized Republicans.  But a reader notes that the NDGOP actually had more delegates at its convention than the Democrats did:

I saw in the paper (Forum or Herald, I don’t remember) that the number of delegates for the Dems was 900.  The Republican convention had 1,100.

What happened to all the talk about how the energized Democrats were going to have so many more delegates than the demoralized Republicans?  Good thing the Dems had to use the Alerus for their convention...it’s not like they couldn’t have fit their thousands of delegates in a gym or somethin’…

Indeed.

The millions North Dakota Democrats get from out of state can certainly fund giant, attention-getting spectacles.  But those spectacles are just spectacles without the support of the people.

What about the vast difference in crowds?

When Dorgan said something to the effect of the crowd being about average for a Democratic convention, give or take 15000, I thought to myself- we have them all rounded up in there, it WOULD be a good time to chain the doors shut.

Crowds aren’t delegates.  Even car accidents attract crowds.

I found that number interesting as well.

Especially because as they were announcing Obama’s trip a few weeks ago, I heard Jamie Selzer (Dem-NPL executive director) bragging on local talk radio that they were going to have over 2,000 delegates.

Hmmmm ... the grass roots must not be as fired up as they thought.

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.

I wounder if the Fargo Forum will write stories about this difference in numbers and admit that maybe the GOP isn’t completely demoralized after all.  Doubt it…

A political party cannot be all things to all people. It must represent certain fundamental beliefs which must not be compromised to political expediency, or simply to swell its numbers.

The Associated Press is now reporting the Democrat delegate count as “close to 1,100.” That’s still less than the NDGOP, but if you look at the number of delegates who voted for their most contested race, the Governorship, only about 950 delegates voted.

Again, way less than the NDGOP.  And these folks were supposed to be fired up by Obama and Hillary.

Isn’t registration for the Republican convention more expensive, too? $75 for the GOP, how much for the Dem?

On the other hand, maybe the Dem-NPL’s base of Williams County farmers was out in the fields.

I’m not sure.  I was a delegate for district 45 and I think I paid $30 for registration.  Although I have no idea how much it is for the dems.

I think you mean $40.  Younger delegates got a discounted rate, but maybe you got a deal for being in college Doug?  For older delegates it was like $80.

Rob,

You’re a smart guy.  I have to image that you don’t really believe what you are writing here.  It’s not about delegates.  Democratic delegates will vote for Democrats.  GOP delegates will vote Republican.  The Dems could care less about your delegates.  But a crowd of 17,000 people who otherwise wouldn’t have paid attention to either the GOP or Dem-NPL convention is pretty damn important.

You look to be a young guy, Dougee. Discounts to encourage younger people to become active.

As a long-dead Swede, I had to pay the whole boat.

And it STILL sank.
