North Dakota Legislators Considering Privatizing Worker’s Comp.?

This is certainly an interesting development.

I’m not a fan of government monopolies, but there’s no denying that the state-controlled workers compensation agency has been good for North Dakota businesses for the last decade or so.  But, as with any state-controlled agency, that could change with the political winds.

It would certainly be nice to see certain interests in the state (I’m looking at you, Jasper Schneider) not be able to use the Workforce Safety and Insurance agency as a political football any more.  For too long WSI has been beaten around by a pinata by a cabal of labor interests who want WSI turned back into the gravy train for less-than-genuine injured workers and their lawyers that it was in the 1980’s and early 1990’s.

Jasper and his law firm are waiting to milk the WSI for all its worth.  Corporate greed disguised as humanitarianism.

In my state the Republican Governor we elected pushed for and achieved privatization of and outsourcing of quite a few state bureaus and departments, it’s been profitable for the state. We went from a $2 billion deficit left by his Democrat predecessor to a >$2 billion surplus in the 4 years he’s been in office.

Proof that private entities, i.e. evil corporations, are much more capable of handling these tasks for a small fee. And if they don’t get it right, the contract can renegotiated and if necessary, awarded to another candidate. You just can’t get that option with a state agency, you’re just stuck with the downward spiral of burgeoning bureaucracy.
