North Dakota Democrats Not Very Forthcoming On Scruggs Money

The last couple of days I’ve been posting about a big-time contributor to the North Dakota Democrats named Richard “Dickie” Scruggs who has been indicted for allegedly attempting to bribe a federal judge. I decided to ask the North Dakota Democrats if they plan to give the money Scruggs donated to their party back if he gets convicted. To that end, I sent the following email to Executive Director Jamie Selzler today:

Jamie,
Hey this is Rob from Say Anything. I was wondering if I could get a reaction from you about the indictment of Dickie Scruggs (who, as I’m sure you know, is a major backer of the ND Dems) and what your plans are with regard to the money he contributed. Will you give it back? Will you keep it?
Thanks,

Rob Port

A few hours after sending that email to Selzler, I followed up with a call to his office. The receptionist put me on hold, then came back and told me that Jamie had “just picked up the phone.” For the next hour the phone ran busy at Democrat Headquarters, then this afternoon I called and was told that Jamie was busy and would have to call me back.
Are they avoiding me? Maybe, maybe not. But I am interested to hear what their answer will be just as soon as Selzler returns my phone call or email.

Richard “Dickie” Scruggs, the attorney who helped negotiate a multi-billion dollar settlement with tobacco companies in the 1990s and represents hundreds of post-hurricane Katrina homeowners against insurance companies, has been indicted in an alleged scheme to bribe a judge.

A federal grand jury in Oxford indicted Scruggs; his son and law partner Zach Scruggs; Sidney Backstrom, a lawyer in Scruggs’ firm; New Albany based lawyer Timothy Balducci; and former state auditor Steve Patterson, who is an employee of Balducci’s firm.

They are accused of conspiring to bribe state circuit court judge Henry Lackey with $40,000 cash. Thirteen pages long, the indictment accuses the men of trying to influence Lackey to rule in favor of Scruggs’ firm in a civil lawsuit.

Perhaps he will never answer to your e-mail or your phone calls.Anyway, it’s admirable that you tried.
