Norman Mailer: Dead At 84

He was a liberal nut, but the sort of entertaining liberal nut that you could have some respect for.

Ultimately a hero is a man who would argue with the gods, and so awakens devils to contest his vision. The more a man can achieve, the more he may be certain that the devil will inhabit a part of his creation.

Before you gush all over Mailer and extend your heartfelt respect, I would suggest you look more carefully at his life. He was a hard drinker (Alcoholic), a recreational drug user, he stabbed his second wiife almost to death in a drunken rage, he had six wives, he often got into bar room brawls to force his will on others, he engaged in public obscenities, he was an unabashed communist, he was strongly hostile to Christianity, while being sympathetic to fringe religions.

In short, he was a pig of a human being and not worthy of any admiration, except for his writing talent and while he was a very good writer, he was a whore selling his pen to aid Democrat causes and liberalism, even claiming to have been responsible for JFK’s election. So, Rob old boy, you can have all the respect for this guy you want, it is your right, but you’ll pardon me if I do not!

No matter the age or state of health, for a military man it is always glorious to tilt at windmills, rescue a fair Dulcinea and be a gallant knight in armor in a glorious cause.

Like I said, he was an entertaining nut.  And I respect (some) of his writing accomplishments, not necessarily the way he lived his life.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

Frédéric Bastiat, The Law
