No National Anthem At The World Series

Watching the World Series tonight.  The opening ceremonies just concluded.  Bob Seger (who needs some serious teeth whitening/orthodontic work) just finished singing “America the Beautiful,” and now they’re getting ready to play ball.

No national anthem.

Call me a traditionalist, but I would have liked them to sing the national anthem.  Now of all times, given the contentious political climate and the fact that we’re at war.

Comments

Would singing the National Anthem help our soldiers? Would it produce any tangible benefits?

Maybe!...It couldn’t hurt.

I guess that stuff about baseball being “America’s Pastime” is no longer true.  How sad.

If you don’t know by now, don’t mess with it.

The TV coverage must have just missed it - There is no way that the National Anthem wasn’t performed -

The National Anthem is played before every regular season game, every minot league game, and pre-season exhibition games -

Bob Seger was slated to sing the Anthem tonight - Must have been TV goof up not showing it....

The ASTROS sing God Bless America in the 7th inning stretch and the national Anthem at the beginning. I wonder if it was a goof up?

Correct me if I’m wrong, but didn’t Seger screw up America the Beautiful too???? It seemed way too short.

Louann...I didn’t see it because I am watching the Sooner Colorado. Sometimes I have noticed performers don’t quite get all the words right.

I don’t know...I watched it live and it didn’t seem like they missed it.

But anything is possible, I guess.

I would have liked it better.

I was just expressing a personal preference and opinion as a fan and patron of Major League Baseball.  Is that not ok with you Davey?

My team is out, so I don’t much care.  I wouldn’t mind seeing the Tiggers win because I like Leyland, but I like Pujols too…

I think both teams are deserving of it.

ASTRO fans have a hard time pronouncing that one name. Sorry! I think you are right though, both teams are deserving. Maybe tomorrow they will sing the National Anthem??? I would think we are not the only ones that wondered?

Not to change the subject, BUT early voting starts Monday! Good night.

At least we got to see the Anthem performed tonight (Sunday)!  Anyone ever find out if they actually performed it last nght and just didn’t televise it?

I was at Game 1 of the World Series, and no, they did not sing the National Anthem.  Bob Seger sang America the Beautiful and then they moved straight to the first pitch.  I’m not sure of the reason, but if anyone has any insight, I’d be curious to know.  Disappointing though.

I just watched the beginning of the game and only saw John Mellencamp show up late and sing “My Country”, when did they sing the anthem?

Anita Baker sang the National Anthem when they returned from the commercial break following John Mellencamp.  FWIW I was unimpressed with both John Mellencamp’s and Anita Baker’s performances.

You did not miss the national anthem due to a chevy commercial.  I was at the game Saturday night and there was NO ANTHEM! The fans were standing waiting for it to start and everyone was confused/pissed when they just took up with the game.  My family and I tried to explain it while driving back to Chicago.  I want to believe it was a mistake.  Then again, how do you forget the anthem.  For christ’s sake, I’m 34 years old and I’m watching my country go to shit.  wtf.

Go Tigers!!

I just spoke to the PR guy at MLB and he assured me that the National Anthem was sung by someone from American Idol for the first game Saturday night.  Did anyone see/hear this???  I was at the game and in my seat well before the opening ceremonies and I didn’t hear it.

There was no national anthem sung at the opening game to the World Series.  The PR guy must have confused things with the second game.  See the following article as to why Bob Seger himself chose to sing America the Beautiful instead.  I thought perhaps it was a way of expressing his preference for changing the song to ‘be’ the national anthem, but in his own words, it was much less controversial than that:  http://www.freep.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20061021/ENT04/610210393
