Newt Gingrich Gives Hesitant Endorsement To Bailout

Mike Pence says no.  Newt Gingrich says, that if he were still in Congress, he’d probably say yes.

Gingrich also says that with this bailout we’re buying 20 years of bureaucracy for a short-term fix.  I’m convinced that with this bailout we’re only postponing an inevitable collapse, and that it’s better to pay the price now rather than later when it will come with the additional cost of the bureaucracy (not to mention unprecedented new government power over our capital markets) between now and then.

Which makes me wonder why, if Gingrich really believes this is only a short-term fix, he’d support the bailout.

Newt ultimately has to endorse it because he has to be liked by “conservatives” and he’s decided that most “conservatives” agree that something has to be done.  Newt’s instinct is to oppose it with everything he’s got, but of course then he might be labeled as some sort of Ron Paul-kook.  That’s the last thing Newt wants.  If he was intellectually honest with himself he’d understand that Ron Paul is right on this issue and that he (Newt) agrees with it.

I don’t think opposing the bailout makes one a “Ron Paul kook.” I think being Ron Paul makes you a kook.

Mike Pence is opposing the bailout.  He’s no kook.

But I’ll agree that Newt tends to have his finger in the wind a bit more than he should.

Love this line from Maureen Dowd:

It was quite a memorable moment in history for the M.B.A. president and the nominee of the party of business. Who would have dreamed that when socialism finally came to the U.S.A. it would be brought not by Bolsheviks in blue jeans but Wall Street bankers in Gucci loafers?

Newt flip-flops on the endorsement....because...um...he is a man of principle, as are the joke that was once the Republican party.

Love this line from Maureen Dowd:

Wall Street is demanding a bailout because this is the government’s fault. The beaurocrats said “how dare you not make these loans because these people are poor...that’s redlining!” And now that they made the loans, the same fools are screaming “why did you make these loans to these people when’s it’s obvious they couldn’t afford them?” They can’t win.

It’s wall street vs main street sure. But it’s main street screwing wall street...not the other way around.

As usual, Dowd is too stupid to see the forest...for the forest.
