Newt Gingrich: Give Me $30 Million And I’ll Run For President

Interesting…

MARIETTA, Georgia (CNN)—Former House Speaker Newt Gingrich told supporters on Thursday that if they pledge at least $30 million to his campaign over a three-week period starting Monday, he will compete for the GOP 2008 presidential nomination.

Gingrich chose Thursday, the 13th anniversary of the signing of his “Contract With America,” to launch his “Solutions Day” campaign, which he said is a search for bipartisan answers to the country’s major challenges.

Without mentioning the 2008 race, Gingrich outlined what sounded like a campaign message when he called for “real change, not the same old stuff.”

He said “very bold” proposals are needed to bring the U.S. government into the 21st century.

“I think, as a general rule, that levees should not break, that bridges should not fall, that students should actually learn,” Gingrich said.

The idea of a Newt Gingrich presidency is appealing, but I just don’t think he’s electable.  He’s too polarizing a figure (most people already know who he is and have an opinion about him, and for most that’s not going to change) and if he got in the race in a serious way the media would have a field day with his personal baggage.

All due respect to Newt, but I’d just as soon he stay out of the race.

i dont look at him and go “gee hes got president written all over him” and that is a problem.

By being in the race, Newt moves the GOP a bit further to the Right, and clearly further isolates the Democrats to the far left.  So far, he is the only one talking about confronting the left in ideological and policy terms, and challenging Democrats directly about the War on Islamist terrorism, Iran’s nuclear ambitions, or the future of the US economy.

Finally, it is also true that Newt’s entry into the race moves both Rudy and Romney to the left, while making Fred Thompson less the “rightwing” candidate, and more moderate by comparison.  Newt’s formal entry into the race could actually help Thompson get the nomination, and I have now doubt Newt is fully aware of this.

And Fred Thompson would take a nosedive if Newt got in.

I like Newt! He’s got great ideas and he’s a great strategist. But, as gonzo noted, he doesn’t look presidential. He looks like some kid who’s about to have his lunch money stolen from him by some bully.

His baggage is legendary and Newt Derangement Syndrome is every bit as bad as BDS, if not worse. He is as capable as Ron Paul is inept, but neither of them is electable in 21st Century America!

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

I have no doubt that Newt would steal a lot of Fred’s thunder...but the difference is that Fred is electable.

Newt isn’t.

Obviously Newt doesn’t think so and many big RNC fundraisers don’t think so either since Fred is having just a wee bit of trouble raising money.

Exactly, and Newt would make a great VP.  Between the two of them, they have more brains than the entire Dem Party.

Obviously Newt doesn’t think so

...and I’d like to date a supermodel, but we both soon learn to deal with our disappointments!

Give the supermodel 30 million she might date Proof.  Providing there’s no touching.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Not electable? This is the biggest knock against Newt. Whether or not this is a legit point is where I think we need to begin the conversation about Newt.

So, some tend to think that Newt is “not electable”. And SHE is? This is where your argument falls to pieces. I think that for either party to win they need a significant number of voters to cross over, they need to pick up most of the Independant voters and need near perfect turnout of the respective base.

Now, who does that Newt or Hillary?? See, doesnt a Gingrich candidacy look better already. Dont fall into the hype over Newts “electability”

Also, “real change requires real change”. Look at the unconventional means that Newt is taking to this campaign! He wants to be “called to service”. I am sure that the 30 million dollar mark has beem studied and looked at from every anlge and is THE number.

As soon as he tells people where they can go to make the “pledge”....He will get it!

Mike you’ve got a good point, the only difference maybe is that the media’s done a full court attack on Newt and a full court defense for shrillary.

Obviously we’d expect that to continue.

On the other hand shrillary has always been less popular the more she gets exposure, for obvious reasons.

C/mon...let’s be realistic here. For thirty mil I’D date Proof. Still no touching, though. For sixty mil I might be convinced to let him paw at me a bit. Sixty mil buys a lot of therapy.

I’m SUCH a ho.
