Newsflash: It’s Cold In North Dakota

I think this is pretty much the definition of filler:

Low temperatures?  In January?  In North Dakota?

This sort of demonstrates the problem with newspapers.  If there’s no news, they still have to print something.  And believe it or not, someone actually got paid for writing this.

Quit complaining! Here it is a freezing 56 degrees, I am dressed warm and have the heaters blazing. At night it has been down to a below freezing 38-40 degrees and that is unbearably cold, what is this a new Ice Age? You just don’t know what cold really is until you live in California.

Seriously, because of the moderate temperatures here most of the year, being used to short sleeves during the day almost 300 days a year, it really does feel unbearably cold to many of us at anything below 60 degrees.

No matter the age or state of health, for a military man it is always glorious to tilt at windmills, rescue a fair Dulcinea and be a gallant knight in armor in a glorious cause.

Damn, who talked?

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

Fillers! Anniversaries make good filler. “Today marks the fifth anniversary of blah, blah, blah! No real news happened. Nothing has changed, but now you can rerun all the old pictures with a little warmed over commentary and fill, sometimes, an entire section of the newspaper (leaving room for tastefully placed ads, of course!) smile

A troll is someone who only wants to stir up trouble, not have an honest debate.  Some signs that a poster is a troll:
* Dodges questions from other posters * Refuses to give sources
* When one of its arguments is shown to be false, either ignores the proof or moves the goalposts.  Heh. (From the LGF faq)

So does doing a short post about a filler article constitute a filler post? wink

Donkephant on January 2, 2008 at 03:44 pm

I blame it on global warming!

More like late fall.

This entire post is equally as worthless as the topic itself. Let’s talk about how the newspapers are talking about the weather. Maybe I can watch someone watch TV and then talk about that.

BHG attempts humour. But savvy scientists can point to the cold and pronounce global warming.

See, everything is Global Warming. It’s in your jeans. It’s in your boats. It’s just like Elvis.

(BTW-it’s currently 51 degrees here.)Brrr.

Even as a GW proponent, I must point out the falsehood in OregonGuy’s linked article which claims:

In the Arctic and the Antarctic… temperatures are rising and glaciers are melting

MOFAL:

Curiously, not only is it not warming in Antarctica, it’s not warming in much of the Arctic either.  Lower Alaska has not seen an increase in temperature since the ‘70s....

Here’s a fun site to visit along those line. Fun example:

It went down to 12°F in northern Mississippi last night.  Not atypical for winter.

Fairbanks is my family’s home.  Has been since the 1950’s.  I can tell you, it ain’t getting any warmer up there.

And by the way, it was 25 above this morning in North Dakota.

Yes!

I’m still sort of recovering, so I’m not exactly at my best right now.

I see Donkeyphant has no sense of humor.  That’s a shame.

Carrick on January 3, 2008 at 10:59 am

It got down into the low 20’s here last night. I object. This is South Louisiana. I hate being cold. There was ice in my cat’s water this morning and as I’ve often stated the only ice I want contact with is in my scotch.

Damn that global warming.
