New Yorker Magazine Depicts Obama In Turban With Burning American Flag

The folks at the The New Yorker are saying this is “satire,” but I’m not getting the joke.

image

I guess the “satire” is that this is the conservative view of Obama.  The problem is that this is over the top even for most conservatives.  Not to mention the fact that boiling the right’s objections to Obama down to something as silly as the Muslim thing is a straw-man argument so dumb as to not even be worth addressing.

How about this as a possible interpretation.

Obama the Osama candidate!

Michelle heads the new Civilian, brown shirt, security forces.

Obama will wear his pajamas in the Oval Office for all state visits.

I’ll say here what I said at Althouse, the cover to be realistic would have a picture of Lenin, Trotsky or Alinsky rather than Obama. Otherwise, I’d say the artist pretty much nailed it.

Now is it over the top, yeah, too much honesty leaves open too much room for backlash.

Pal2Pal on July 13, 2008 at 06:43 pm

oops, rather than Osama

Rob,

You overlook the portrait of bin Laden over the fireplace.

Obviously a Freudian slip, or wishful thinking, or both.

If govt control of the economy were the way to go, the Soviet Union would be the richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world.

Thanks to Obama, America remains the only country where it is illegal to drill our own oil!

What’s with that terrorist fist jab thing? Funny cartoon.

You gotta love the commie rifle (AK-47) on Michelle’s back.

BTW, the drawing of Michelle looks a lot like Sixties vintage Angela Davis.  Right On!

There’s Phil Gramm’s “out;” he can just claim he was being satirical and all will be forgiven!

The portrait of our next president.  Depressing.

One of the most important talents for success in politics is the ability to make utter nonsense sound not only plausible but inspiring. Barack Obama has that talent. We will be lucky if we escape the catastrophes into which other countries have been led by leaders with that same charismatic talent.

Judging by the quality of posts on this comments page that straw man argument has a vital, beating heart.

A blog comment section is hardly the bellwether of the conservative movement.

The purpose of government shouldn’t be to do good, but simply to refrain from doing evil.

Rob on July 13, 2008 at 10:11 pm

A blog comment section is hardly the bellwether of the conservative movement.

Especially the comments by lefties.

He can claim he was just joking; yeah, that’s the ticket!

Shrug, you’re just too nice Rob. The rest of us see it and say “Huh, that’s spot on.” and say so.

Anti-Americanism? Check. Dealing with militant radicals? Check. Pandering to bad guys? Check. Minus the turban…it’s not a bad call.

It’s all political bullshit. Liberals (and Robert108) lie and spin and twist and obscure and distract and cheat to protect their guys and hurt the opposing team. It’s like wrestling. They distract the ref while their team mate hits you with a chair. There’s no rule they won’t break, no law they won’t skirt, no crime they won’t forgive as long as they can win.

Not a very accurate depiction at all…Michelles ass is much larger than that.

The magazine explains at the start of its news release previewing the issue: “On the cover of the July 21, 2008, issue of The New Yorker, in ‘The Politics of Fear,’ artist Barry Blitt satirizes the use of scare tactics and misinformation in the Presidential election to derail Barack Obama’s campaign

Now tell me. What about the cartoon is an inaccurate depiction of the future of America, according to conservatives, if Obama is elected?

ollie-B on July 14, 2008 at 11:08 pm

Now tell me. What about the cartoon is an inaccurate depiction of the future of America, according to conservatives, if Obama is elected?—

It came from the mind of a leftie political cartoonist.  It shows the leftie mindset, not a conservative mindset.  We expect any President to follow his Oath of Office.
