New York Times Calls for Daschle to Step Aside

When you’re a liberal and the NYT throws you under the bus…you know it’s time to go!

When President Obama nominated former Senator Tom Daschle to be his secretary of health and human services, it seemed to be a good choice. Mr. Daschle, as the co-author of a book on health care reform, knew a lot about one of the president’s signature issues. As a former Senate majority leader, he also knew a lot about guiding controversial bills through Congress, where he remains liked and respected by former colleagues.
Unfortunately, new facts have come to light — involving his failure to pay substantial taxes that were owed and his sizable income from health-related companies while he worked in the private sector — that call into question his suitability for the job. We believe that Mr. Daschle ought to step aside and let the president choose a less-blemished successor.

“Less blemished successor”? Oooh! That’s going to leave a mark!

Not that it really matters what the NYT’s says, because as most of us know the NYT’s is a worthless piece of trash and has zero credibility

This is true with us normal folk, but to Obama and HIS crowd in the Congress, they still seem to think this rag matters and so to them this is a big deal.

We have already stated our position about tax evaders.
They have no place in the government. They should be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

Better tell that to the CinC! He seems to be collecting the entire set! Heh.

What challenge? Is that another word you’re unfamiliar with? I merely stated facts.
Do you feel threatened by facts, or are are you “challenged” all the time?

The one that went over your head. Next time I shall awake at 04:00 hrs, check the SA Blog, and make my posts in order to deprive you the ability to make stupid statements.

    Just a tad redundant.

    A Citizen on February 3, 2009 at 03:21 pm

Yeah! You are right. No need to be redundant to point the obvious. Mea culpa.

So, I supposedly made a challenge that is “over my head”?

I contend that I made no “challenge” (I was there! I think I would have noticed!) , but rather that, you were challenged when you “woke up, had breakfast, took an ellinas and turned your computer on”! Again, I apologize if facts threaten you!

But, continue your babble if it helps you make it through the day!

Zsa Zsa – They may realize that the average folks would scream bloody murder if they asked for and received a bailout – same goes for any other so-called news organization. I truly think they are hoping that by taking a belated but principally correct stand that they can somehow save their image and regain readership and avertisers which are much more important to them than readers. I read an article recently that said their ad revenue was down some 15% last year. Given that papers in general operate on tight margins, a 15% drop in revenue is HUGE. I think they also just got some kind of cash infusion from Carlos Slim didn’t they? Long and short – I think they’re just trying to save their asses by catering to whomever they think will throw them a life-line.

I guess pigs do fly sometimes.

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

So what justification do they (times, Obama camp) have for nixing Daschle while they allowed the other tax cheat become Treasury Secretary?

  • SigFan

Maybe they’ve finally realized by taking a hard-left position on just about everything they’ve pissed enough people off that they are in danger of going under. Amazing how when self-preservation kicks in people can flip their point of view on a dime. Kind of like how so many people hate law enforcement folks, that is until they need them.

15% drop in Ad revs are Huge! Hopefully the NYT’s will get some new journalist’s that will actually investigate and do some factual unbiased reporting. BUT I won’t hold my breath.

SigFan, That is why it makes me question the NYT’s. Are they looking for a bail out too?

  • mnconservative

Just because they sound reasonable on this subject doesn’t mean they are reasonable. This is just one time that they have done the right thing. When they start reporting the news in an unbiased fashion, consistently, I will begin to think that they have changed their spots. This was merely an opinion, one time! How about being the watchdog of the gov’t that protection under the 1st Amendment was intended , not a bunch of sycophants. IMHO

after YEARS of calling ‘em the way the far left told them to call ‘em, the GRAY LADY is nothing but an tired slut who’s been had way too many times, looks all gone, smells bad corpse of old lib media.

NYT saying that Dash4cashel should step aside is as bold a bit of journalism as we’ve seen since NBC’s Brian Williams pinned down THE ONE with his “How do you feel?” interview.

    Daschle’s OUT!

So much for bi-partisan biped support!

  • Robert

Oh, you can bet this somehow serves their interests more than Obama’s. I don’t know how, but the NYT isn’t throwing him under the bus for naught – there is a reason and I am sure it has nothing to do with the one they stated.

Not that it really matters what the NYT’s says, because as most of us know the NYT’s is a worthless piece of trash and has zero credibility. It makes me question and wonder what is up with the sudden burst of sanity with Tom Daschel? Are they trying to change their image? I mean look at the opportunities the NYT’s has had to trash and throw liberals under the bus before. They have ignored and rallied behind the likes of Ted Kennedy and his family members who have been accused of rape, tax evasion etc… Don’t get me wrong. I am thrilled that for once in my life I can say the NYT’s actually is taking the high road. BUT what about all the other tax evaders? Why throw Tom Daschel under the bus and not the others?

  • sc

I think the nyt has figured out something our senators and Obama haven’t figured out. If every taxpayer starts to forget or just doesn’t understand that they owe taxes, there is a big revenue problem.

When Tom Daschle joined the law and lobbying firm Alston & Bird in 2005, The Washington Post detailed the critical role played by Bob Dole — special counsel to the firm (who “has been reported to earn $800,000 to $1 million annually”) — in recruiting Daschle to join (h/t).
