New York Times Backs Lamont Over Lieberman

Their reasoning? As near as I can tell it boils down to the fact that Ned Lamont is not Joe Lieberman. For the Times, it seems as though this isn’t so much about supporting Lamont as it is about withdrawing support for Lieberman.
Seriously, Lamont is mentioned in exactly two paragraphs. The rest is all bashing Lieberman for not being Howard Dean and attacking the Bush administration at every opportunity.
Here’s the best the Times can come up with for praise for Lamont:

Mr. Lamont, a wealthy businessman from Greenwich, seems smart and moderate, and he showed spine in challenging the senator while other Democrats groused privately.

He “seems smart and moderate.” And he’s not inclined to agree with icky Bush on anything, which is the real point.
That’s great. Wonderful that the Times has such high standards for endorsing politicians.

“Whister, I don’t recall seeing a lot of respect for Hillary Clinton for her position on the war.”

That is because we all know that Hillary is lying, just like her “husband”.

I had to stop reading after this,

He has voted with his party in opposing the destructive Bush tax cuts…

I have little time to read people who aren’t connected in any way with reality unless I can directly challenge them.

I’m curious as to why Republicans are so determined to get Lieberman elected. If you want him so bad, he’ll be looking for a new party after August 8th.

likwid: You have to realize that the tax cuts are destructive to the leftie politicians and their vote-buying/graft way of life. Have some compassion, man! Those people depend on taxing you to survive. ;-)

Lieberman’s about as liberal as they come. However he is right on the war and we have respect for him for that.

I’m curious as to why Republicans are so determined to get Lieberman elected.

Because Lieberman represents a departure from the far-left direction Democrats have gone in during recent years. Although I am a conservative Republican, I believe that America is best served when there are two strong parties in power, not one dominant party. Unfortunately, if the Dems keep moving to the left they aren’t going to stay in power.

Lieberman, as Whistler points out, is a liberal on most domestic issues…but he’s got it right on foreign policy.
