New Poll: Racism From Democrats May Cost Obama The Election
Now, whod’a thunk it?
I mean, aren’t the Republicans supposed to be the bitter, clinging types who would be more inclined to vote against a black candidate just because of his color? Well, not according to this AP/Yahoo poll:
WASHINGTON (AP) — Deep-seated racial misgivings could cost Barack Obama the White House if the election is close, according to an AP-Yahoo News poll that found one-third of white Democrats harbor negative views toward blacks — many calling them “lazy,” “violent,” responsible for their own troubles.
The poll, conducted with Stanford University, suggests that the percentage of voters who may turn away from Obama because of his race could easily be larger than the final difference between the candidates in 2004 — about two and one-half percentage points.
Wait….say that again:
More than a third of all white Democrats and independents — voters Obama can’t win the White House without — agreed with at least one negative adjective about blacks, according to the survey, and they are significantly less likely to vote for Obama than those who don’t have such views.
Well, slap my face and call me Sally. That’s what I thought they said, but I really want some clarification:
The findings suggest that Obama’s problem is close to home — among his fellow Democrats, particularly non-Hispanic white voters. Just seven in 10 people who call themselves Democrats support Obama, compared to the 85 percent of self-identified Republicans who back McCain.
And, according to this poll (note that it’s from the Associated Press in conjunction with Yahoo – so I hardly think it’s inclined to give conservatives a break just to be nice) just where are all those mean ol’ conservatives on the racial issuse?
Lots of Republicans harbor prejudices, too, but the survey found they weren’t voting against Obama because of his race. Most Republicans wouldn’t vote for any Democrat for president — white, black or brown.
So, to sum it up, if the election is lost it may be because of racism, but a racism that comes from the Democratic side of the ticket and not the Republican side. Keep in mind that this poll was done at Stanford University. I’ll bet those researchers heads are exploding over this one.
Or maybe not. Just finding racism at all may have been enough for them.
