Never Mind, Huckabee Doesn’t Support Ending Birthright Citizenship

Huckabee is denying his support for ending birthright citizenship, which was reported earlier today and sourced to Minutemen founder Jim Gilchrist, via this press release:

I do not support an amendment to the constitution that would prevent children born in the U.S. to illegal aliens from automatically becoming American citizens.  I have no intention of supporting a constitutional amendment to deny birthright citizenship.

So what to think now?  Did Huckabee just hang Gilchrist out to dry?  Did he make the promise and reneg?  Or did Gilchrist lie about Huck’s support for such an amendment in the first place?

I’m leaning toward Huck hanging Gilchrist out to dry.  Gilchrist isn’t the most credible of political operatives, but he certainly can’t be so stupid as to think that he won’t get burned for saying Huck supports something he doesn’t.  More likely Huckabee made this promise to Gilchrist because he was desperate to shore up his illegal immigration record and needed to get Gilchrist on board with him some how.

This just erodes whatever goodwill a Gilcrist endorsement of Huckabee was supposed to do on illegal immigration a couple weeks ago before the Iowa Caucus.  Huck is grasping at straws to try to get away from his illegal tuition issue and his consistent “letting them have benefits is the Christian thing to do” stance.

There really isn’t any way to nuance his way around this.

One quick idea about Border Enforcement--have Chuck Norris secure the border.  Seems that Chuck is always right there with Huck.  Maybe Chuck as head of homeland security.

Watch Gilchrist switch to Ron Paul who does support ending birthright citizenship.

Another explanation, and one well justified by the history of Gilchrist, is that Gilchrist was running off at the mouth, trying to maneuver Huckabee.

Keep in mind that the Mexican Constitution guarantees citizenship in Mexico to those born to Mexican parents.  Why not simply offer parents yet another ticket back to Mexico City?

Then, if parents refuse to take their child home with them, the shoe of “cruel to kids” is kinda on the other foot, isn’t it?
