Need Some Advice

Recently some things have changed at my office that has left me filling even more roles in our business than I was previously. To put it mildly, I’m spread out all over the place and I need to get organized.
What I’m looking for is some sort of program that will do all of the following:

  1. Allow me to schedule appointments.
  2. Allow me to view a calendar of my appointments.
  3. Allow me to create a to do list and then mark things off that I’ve done.
  4. Email me reminders on due to do list items and appointments.

I don’t really care if its a web-based on pc-based solution, just so long as I don’t have to have my computer on all the time to send me the reminders. And reminders are the biggest thing I’m looking for here. I’m also looking for something fairly inexpensive as I’ll be paying for this out of my pocket.
Anybody got any suggestions?

Well, hell. There is software to synch Outlook calendar with cellphones, including reminders. Unfortunately, that particular feature won’t work with all phones (none of the Audiovox model can). You would need something like a Nokia, Motorolla, or Ericsson (there are others also). In other words, you would need to get a phone with this sort of feature in mind. And you’d ned outlook. And to buy the synch software.

What I’m saying is that it’d be an investment, and probably out of the cheap range.

The software, if you’re still interested is DataPilot.

There are other cellphone solutions available, but I suspect that with the Audiovox you’d still run into the same problem with notifications while the computer is off. Your PDA probably can do something like that, but it would need to stay on (I’d think so anyway).

Outlook is fairly good, and quite easy to use.

I really have no idea how you would get reminders without your PC being on. Something would need to be on to send you a reminder.

Microsoft’s Outlook does all that as well as Sunbird from Mozilla.

Outlook is well established and will cost you money. Sunbird is free and hasn’t reached v1.0 yet, but it works.

Yahoo also has a free web-based calendar, but I’m not sure if it does todo lists.

Actually, come to think of it, I think I understand. Do you have a cellphone…if so, what make/model?

That new phone I got is half phone and half palm pilot, so I’m getting an intro into Palm. It’s pretty useful and there are quite a number of applications you can add onto it. I’m know with some sort of Palm device you could achieve #’s 1 and 2, and I’m pretty sure you can do #3 as well. If you had a phone/palm like I have, I’m sure you could install an application that would achieve #4, but I’m not positive of that.

Take a look at Goldmine (http://www.goldmine.com)

I have used it for 12 years (since back when it was a DOS program). It is great and will do all the things you want, including sending text to your phone for reminders. You can keep all of your contacts in it, use its calendar, to-do function, and keep track of all your contacts.

    Check it out.

I think I misunderstood what it was you were looking for..

And FYI, the gizmo I have only cost me $50, with a contract through Sprint.

Without the contract,I think it runs $200-$300…

    Audiovox CDM8910.

What I want is something that will send me a text message (I can receive them on my phone when sent to a specific email addrss) when I have an appointment or something coming up.

I’m almost positive it’d have to be something web-based.

I have a palm pilot…but I hate carrying it around. And I can’t afford one of those gizmos you’ve got (unless readers here band together and create a get-Rob-a-gizmo drive, which isn’t likely).

I was looking more for a web service or something, I guess…

Yes, but can these send me email alerts even if the computer running it is off? That’s part of what I’m looking for…
