NDGOP Convention Update: Rick Berg Casts Himself As The Candidate Who Can Win
Rep. Rick Berg is getting a lot of mileage out of a Rasmussen poll done weeks ago which showed Berg beating Rep. Earl Pomeroy by 6 points while Kevin Cramer was statistically tied with with the incumbent. All three of Berg’s endorses at the convention – former state insurance commissioner Jim Poolman, former Fargo mayor Bruce Furness and Rep. Stacy Dahl – mentioned some variation on the theme, “Berg is the candidate who can win.”
To a Republican party that’s desperate to take back two of the federal delegation seat the Democrats have held now for decades, that message may be like water to thirsty plants
In Berg’s speech, he focused on the free market and tying Rep. Pomeroy to Barack Obama. He noted that Pomeroy and Obama were in this very building – the Alerus Center in Grand Forks – for the Democrat state convention and that now, more than a year into Obama’s term in office, the people are standing up against Obama.
Suggesting it was time for the people to stand up to Earl Pomeroy as well.
Berg also had the best line of the convention so far: “Thanks to Republican leadership in North Dakota, Earl Pomeroy will be able to find a job when he comes home.”
Berg isn’t as dynamic a speaker as Cramer, or even JD Donaghe, but he’s definitely got a lot of support at the convention.
