NDGOP Convention Update: House Candidate Says He’s Pushing For A Primary

Shortly after NDGOP House candidate JD Donaghe came off the stage I interviewed him about his intentions should he not get the nomination at the convention. He told me that he has the signatures to push the race to a primary.
I believe, under the rules, any candidate who wants a primary election can get one by obtaining 300 delegate signatures at the convention but I’m not 100% sure on that. UPDATE: Speaking with those in-the-know at the convention, a primary race would require “1,000 or so” signatures filed with the Secretary of State and would be an actual election held in June.
A delegate election, if it took place, would mean that the NDGOP wouldn’t have a candidate to run against Pomeroy until June. One observer told me that while Donaghe wowed the convention with his speech, he’ll hand the election to Earl Pomeroy if he does that.

“Wow, the Berg spammers are out in strength.”
No – Rob – the North Dakota GOP supporters are out in strength. We decided against 0-2 in favor of a viable candidate. We need your support against Pomeroy socialism, will you help us?

If he screws this up, I hope he doesn’t get any support for any position in the future.

This deserves a vote of the people! Shoot, Cramer may have already bought enough delegates to leave him with an asterisk if he wins.

JD deserves to get his message out to the people. If that takes a little time, then we’ll need to wait. The decision shouldn’t be up to the ND GOP Politburo and the deep pocketed out of state interests.

There seems to be a confusion here about how a primary would work. Berg is automatically on the ballot as the endorsed candidate of the convention. If Donaghe or Hendrickson (or Cramer) wants to get on that ballot, they’ve got to put together signatures of 3% of the number of voters who voted in the last election for Congress (but the SoS is not allowed to require more than 300 signatures for any office, so 300 valid signatures would do it). Cramer won’t do it, because he wants a political future, and both political party structures look very negatively on primary challenges (see Nick Spaeth in 1992 as an example). Plus, Cramer couldn’t run in the primary for both PSC and Congress. Donaghe and/or Hendrickson could do it, but they’d be the only challengers (both would need the signatures), and Berg would ignore them (much as Hoeven ignored Hendrickson when he ran as an Independent for Governor last time). Primary turnout in this state is abysmal, so don’t expect that a challenge from either one of these guys would be taken very seriously.

You would know about alienation wouldn’t you, Rob Politburo.

Same thing that will happen if Cramer gets the nod. 0-3 Kevin Cramer

Your observer is full of BS. A primary would be a good thing. Personally, I think Berg would shred Cramer in a debate.

Besides, other states have primaries as late as August, and it has no effect on the outcome. Voters don’t need or want an eight-month long campaign.

Wow, the Berg spammers are out in strength.

I wonder if you guys realize just how many people you alienate with this kind of nonsense?
