NDGOP Convention Update: Hoeven Gets Nomination, But Sorum Got 21% Of Delegates
Here’s the tally for the Senate nomination race, which suffered from a lot of abstentia votes thanks to delegates leaving the floor after the Berg/Cramer race:
John Hoeven: 945
Paul Sorum: 251
Absent: 276
Total delegates voting: 1196
So what’s the news here? That 21% of the delegates didn’t cast their ballot for Hoeven. Illustrating that support for Hoeven from conservatives is…tepid.
Indeed, the District 47 chair said that a number of his delegates were “sandbagging.” Which at first seems a reference to the flood flight, until you consider that District 47 is in Bismarck. The chairman’s meaning was that his delegates just weren’t voting.
The implication being the delegates didn’t want to choose between Hoeven and Sorum.
I full expect Hoeven to run away with this election, but I think a lot of Republicans are wishing they had a better candidate. Many of the speakers – including Senator Thune, Drew Wrigley and others – made comments about how the government cannot create jobs and got big cheers from the crowd.
The centerpiece of Hoeven’s campaign? His administration created 40,000 jobs.
