NBC Goes Green During Sunday Night Football

Did anyone else catch this during half-time of the Eagles/Cowboys game tonight?

Basically, NBC decided to show us what responsible, earth-friendly (and, ahem, liberal) organization they are by...shutting off the lights in their studios during the half time show so that their anchors (including Keith Olbermann) had to sit in the dark.  This, apparently, saves a bunch of electricity.

But you know what they’ve also done?  They’ve flown reporters all over the world (including the north and south poles) to report on climate change.  So they’re saving electricity by shutting off the lights during one half-time show of one football game, but then probably using more energy than they saved by flying people like Matt Lauer to remote destinations so they can read lines off a teleprompter there instead of in a studio in New York.  And that probably doesn’t even count all the extra batteries and what not NBC used up while its studio crews had to work in the dark.

The most galling part?  When Lauer, while hawking the Today Show’s coverage of climate change, talks of interviewing “experts” for the story like...Al Gore.  Because we know Dr. Al has a Phd. in climatology.

What a joke.  Just for that, I’m leaving every light in my house on tonight.

I agree, how stupid to turn of the lights during half time. What a joke! I agree that I will leave on every light in my 5000sf house to protest this silly jesture by NBC.

Well, we all knew Olberman’s been “in the dark”, in a figurative sense, for some time now. Call this the literal frosting on that piece of bum cake.

Bruce on November 5, 2007 at 04:58 am

How idiotic. I saw that nonsense. With all the power it takes to generate a broadcast from a studio do they think that turning off a few light bulbs and sitting in candlelight will make any kind of difference whatsoever?

Symbolic, hypocritical stupidity.

You can bet their lights in their mega-dollar homes weren’t off last night.

That’s the global warming debate, all fluff no substance.

It took millions of watts of power nationwide just to broadcast the carrier signal, whether the lights were on in the studio or not. Add to that millions of watts used by TV sets coast to coast and you have hypocrisy writ large!

I always thought it funny when local broadcasters, as a “public service”, tell their viewers what they can do to conserve energy. The one tip you never hear is “Turn off your TV and read a book!”

Those who think the party or the country, will be “taught a lesson” by handing the levers of power over to the liberals will learn a lesson, but it will be at the expense of our country and her liberties. And there are no guarantees that the party or the country will come out stronger, more conservative or better positioned to win elections against the incumbent liberals.

here’s what. it costs money. they are a business and, not literally, so is everyone in our country. leave your lights on, ass. itll just cost you more money. how democrat of you!

That’s going to do wonders for their ratings.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

I didn’t see the half-time show, but I noticed that their little peacock symbol would pulsate green throughout the game.  I just thought that they were rooting for the Eagles.  It was gratifying to see the Cowboys make the Eagles look like a pee-wee league, flag football team.

Just like the Saints did with the Jaguars.

NBC’s half time ‘green’ show demonstrates a level of stupidity that is exceeded only by AlGore, who has put the Nobel prize to shame.

Here is an idea. Have NBC shut everything off for Green Week so we don’t have to watch this liberal drival and they save even more electricity. It’s a win - win situation for all.

jim dixon on November 5, 2007 at 12:34 pm

Or we could just have them cancel Law & Order SCU (Special Conspiracy Unit).  There’s a enough hot air in that show melt most of Greenland.  Then again, now that the writers are on strike, the stories may improve.

Why do the guys in the studio errupt in laugter when the announcer introduces Matt Laurer saying, “we’re heading North, very far north … this is not not a movie or TV set, all appearances to the contrary” Are they laughing because they know it’s a hoax?  Why is Matt Laurer’s breath not even showing in these subzero temperatures? Hmmm. He’s probably “north” in the studio one story above the set of Sunday Night Football. What a joke!

RE: “Symbolic, hypocritical stupidity.”

Symbolism isn’t stupid –– you would find it effective if it were in support of a cause you believed in, I’m sure.  Like, say, yellow ribbons or red ribbons that people wear in support of troops or poor kids with AIDS.  The fact that people on this blog are talking about it means that the symbolism wasn’t meaningless –– it was more memorable than just talking about it.

And just to be clear: we do all agree that all things being equal, it’s actually better to conserve energy than use it up, right?

However wrong Gore might be about how quick the climate will change, or what kinds of catastrophes it might cause, it’s absurd to act as if that means “emvironmentalists are wrong.” Like anything, some people take it too far in one direction, other people take it too far in another.  (Incidentally, if you can’t find anyone more conservative than yourself on this issue, that probably means you’re one of the people taking it too far in that direction.)

I’m assuming no one here thinks we should let companies just start dumping toxic waste into the Mississippi, right?  That means there *is common ground* on the environment, meaning that everyone wants to protect the environment to *some* extent.

I have to confess that I just don’t understand why so many people want to mock whoever isn’t willing to assume that rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will just take care of themselves.  It’s all a matter of risk management, and it’s not unreasonable for some people to want to be more careful.  If we turn this into a game, where anyone who wants to do more to protect the environment is just stupid, then I don’t see how we can reach a compromise on a level of risk we’re willing to live with.

Your straw man needs a little more stuffing.

I have to confess that I just don’t understand why so many people want to mock whoever isn’t willing to assume that rising levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere will just take care of themselves.

Oh never mind, I see you had share that stuffing with your second straw man.

RE: “Straw Man.”

Perhaps.  Maybe I just watch too much TV, where it’s people’s jobs to mock their opponents rather than point to where they agree.  I could be reading that into this discussion.

Still, the 18-odd posts before mine gave no evidence that anyone here thinks care for the environment is anything worth pursuing.  And the would-be humor of the posts sure seems to be based on the presumption that everyone knows that only a liberal would draw attention to climate change.

Also, I have to confess that I’m somewhat of a convert, which means I’m liable to overreact against people I used to agree with.  I grew up listening to Rush and writing knee-jerk conservative articles for the school newspaper, and now I basically get angry at arguments that I think polarize important issues unnecessarily.  Maybe my straw men did that same thing here.

Scott on November 9, 2007 at 08:55 pm

For one thing Scott the global warming extremists have declared the debate over.  Now they claim that they must act for the common good.

They haven’t come close to proving their case and they’re declaring a moral imperative to control every facet of our lives.

At this point there’s plenty of room to mock the left.

The Whistler said: ”Extremists” are ”declaring a moral imperative to control every facet of our lives.”

All right, kbiel, where’s the straw man police now?

Gore’s documentary was great precisely because it tried to use non-government means to encourage people to conserve energy and resources.  He argued at the end that it *won’t* take drastic changes –– only small changes –– in people’s behavior to improve the situation.

Obviously he supports some government regulations.  But for me, if the government wants to change auto emission standards, I just don’t see that as controlling my life.  Is there something drastic on the table to control my life that I just don’t know about, or is this your argument more based on the slippery slope?  Did your standard of living go down when CFC’s got out-lawed a few years back?

And in the meantime, I would think conservatives would much prefer Gore working for change through the media rather than running for office and trying to do everything through regulations.  If people like him can succeed in getting people to voluntary improve the situation, then it will be easier to avoid government intervention.

There was a guy walking down the beach and he saw a young boy down the way throwing something into the ocean.  As he approached the boy, her realized there were thousands of starfish that had washed on shore.  The man asked what he was doing, the boy said ‘saving the starfish’. The man said ‘it’s not going to do anygood, you might as well stop’. The boy responded by picking up a starfish, throwing it into the ocean and then he looked at the man and said ‘it made a difference to that one!’

my point- every little bit helps- what have you done? Or not- to those of you leaving your lights on in protest- who is that hurting??
