NBC Analyst: Let’s Get Rid Of The 2nd Amendment
According to NBC News analyst Alex Wagner, the 2nd amendment has to go. “I just think in the grand scheme of the rights that we have; the right of assembly, free speech, I mean, owning a gun does not, it does not tally on the same level as those other Constitutional rights,” she said on the Bill Maher show. “And being more discreet about who gets to have a firearm and right to kill with a firearm, I think is something that would be in our national interest to revisit that.”
Wagner’s opinion speaks to a fundamental misunderstanding of how our rights were established. Free speech and free assembly, etc., etc. aren’t things granted to us by the government. They are “self evident,” as the Declaration of Independence put it. They are inalienable. And backstopping them is the fact that we citizens are armed. Or, at least, are afforded the choice to go armed.
Because we, individually, are the protectors of our rights. Not the government.
