National Treasure

Went to see National Treasure last night with my lady. It was actually pretty great, though I can see where it was heavily inspired by the story from The Da Vinci Code.

Was it historically plausible? Not in the least. Was it scientifically plausible? Nope, not at all. Was it fun? Sure was.

For me it had just the right mix of interesting (though implausible) plot and suspenseful action sequences. Plus it had Diane Krueger in it which is, you know, always a plus. Man she's a hottie. Even my girlfriend thought so.

I almost went crazy and bought stubs for Alexander at the ticket counter, but I didn't. Everything I've heard of Alexander makes it sound like three hours about a famous war lord with very little war in it. So I think I made the right decision.

I saw Alexander. Save your money, it sucked. And that’s being nice. Every time Angelina Jolie opened her mouth and spouted that horrible slavic accent, I fully expected to see Boris Badenov come waddling into the scene. And I’m a huge Angelina Jolie fan, but she was absolutely horrible in that movie. She needs to pay a few visits to Overactors Anonymous after that performance.

It’s pure entertainment.

Right.  Which is why I give these movies a lot of historical leeway when I watch them, as long as they’re not billing themselves as a “true story” or “real history” or something like that.  They’re fun, if not believable.

And I always laugh when somebody brings that up about da Vinci.  Its exactly right.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

You have to suspend disbelief before you attempt watching a movie like this or attempt reading a book like The Da Vinci Code.  It’s pure entertainment.  And with the book, the title sort of gives it away… “Da Vinci” isn’t any more Leonardo’s name than “From Alaska” is yours! grin
