National Security and the Press

In light of the TTT (Two Treasonous Times’) recent rendition of aid and comfort to the enemies of the United States, I find this message from an earlier time on point.

But I do ask every publisher, every editor, and every newsman in the nation to reexamine his own standards, and to recognize the nature of our country’s peril. In time of war, the government and the press have customarily joined in an effort, based largely on self-discipline, to prevent unauthorized disclosures to the enemy. In time of “clear and present danger,” the courts have held that even the privileged rights of the First Amendment must yield to the public’s need for national security.
Today no war has been declared–and however fierce the struggle may be, it may never be declared in the traditional fashion. Our way of life is under attack. Those who make themselves our enemy are advancing around the globe. The survival of our friends is in danger. And yet no war has been declared, no borders have been crossed by marching troops, no missiles have been fired.
If the press is awaiting a declaration of war before it imposes the self-discipline of combat conditions, then I can only say that no war ever posed a greater threat to our security. If you are awaiting a finding of “clear and present danger,” then I can only say that the danger has never been more clear and its presence has never been more imminent.
It requires a change in outlook, a change in tactics, a change in missions–by the government, by the people, by every businessman or labor leader, and by every newspaper. For we are opposed around the world by a monolithic and ruthless conspiracy that relies primarily on covert means for expanding its sphere of influence–on infiltration instead of invasion, on subversion instead of elections, on intimidation instead of free choice, on guerrillas by night instead of armies by day.

Arguably (less so on the contrary side in the light of case law), the United States has indeed been at war since the Joint Resolution Authorizing the Use of Military Force. Still the press insists on providing aid to our enemies.
There can be even less well found argument as to the presses exercise of self restraint in the interests of national security. Having failed to police themselves, it is time for them to be poiiced from without.
Time to prosecute the traitorous bastards.

So then the MSM is not so bad after all if the Administration uses it to leak (oh yeah authorize) the same story to blunt the same story.

For at least the fourth time today, puzzle, I have to point out the fact that what the government did release on the financial tracking program had not cut it’s effectiveness. It was catching people.

You guys make yourself look dumber and dumber every time you make the claim that they leaked the program.

“oh yeah, authorized disclosures” If the President discloses something, it’s authorized. If an unelected “news” corporation does it, it’s not authorized. Get it?

    Puzzled One,

Since you are still demonstrably puzzled by the issues here… The President of the United States is the elected official who sets policy, and from whom all authority to classify, declassify, and downgrade classification descends per duly enacted law.

The TTT has no such legal authority, and has arrogated that power unto themselves at considerable legal risk to themselves, and considerable risk to the security of the Republic. I look forward to seeing them answer for it in a court of law.

    Puzzled One,

It’s rather akin to when fire fighters start a backburn to deprive a dangerous wildfire of fuel and oxygen. They’d prefer to not have to do it, but at times fire is the best way to fight fire.

    Here endeth the lesson.

Oh yeah and tell the treasury secretary to stop giving tours and information to others about the financial tracking of terrorist money.

The people running the program say that’s now over.

P: When the Administration puts out the truth to counter the lies of the left, you squawk about it. Typical. You want a double standard.
Writers and publishers are free to write and publish whatever they want, but they are not free from the consequences of writing and publishing lies and classified info that damages our country. You support license, not freedom. There is a difference.

Oh, so the President uses leaks (authorized disclosures in your world) when it needs to by providing the same information to right wing newspapers.

And actually I have not taken a position on this matter, nor can you point to any comment that I have written about this matter as well. Just wanted to point out to you that it leaks ( oh yeah, authorized disclosures) as well using the MSM to make its point. If they wanted to blunt the story as you claim, hold a press conference.

  • Puzzlefeet

Gee,you must have forgot to include the Wall Street Journal in your prosecution list. Will wait for you to add them as well.

    Puzzled One,

Had the government asked the Wall Street Journal not to publish the information (as it demonstrably did with the Two Treasonous Times’) you would have a valid point. Sadly for your position, the Wall Street Journal received an authorized disclosure from persons authorized to do so as a means of blunting the impact (a spoiling attack) of the stories published by the TTT.
