Nancy The Pirate Likes To Control What The Public Sees And Hears

The Republican Study Committee is accusing Nancy Pelosi of pirating C-SPAN footage for partisan political purposes.

“In addition to using pirated material, Speaker Pelosi also has used the pirated C-SPAN footage for partisan purposes. The collection of C-SPAN footage used in her ‘first official blog’ is an example and the other pirated C-SPAN trademarked material shows Democrat after Democrat offering their views of the non-binding Democrat resolution on the reinforcement and realignment of American troops in Iraq.”

Whether or not it’s appropriate for Speaker Pelosi to be using that C-SPAN footage on her website, it’s interesting that she’s willing to show us all her personally-selected clips of speeches and events on the House floor but won’t let C-SPAN show us live footage from the House.

Typical big-government liberal.  No transparency.  Just keep the public in the dark and only allow them to see what you want them to see.

Update: Some are saying that the RSC got it wrong by accusing Pelosi of misusing C-SPAN’s content quoting Bruce Collins, the Corporate Vice President and General Counsel of C-SPAN saying that the information was incorrect, but Kevin Aylward points out that C-SPAN itself is apparently being inconsistent in applying their copyright policies:

The problem with Collin’s statement is that it really flies in the face of C-SPAN’s history of sending take-down notices to sites using its content. C-SPAN’s web site indicates that you may not stream C-SPAN content, which Pelosi is clearly doing.

Read the whole thing.

Let’s just hope for your sake that she gets the “down” part!

For any voter trying to choose between the two candidates for commander in chief, there is no better test than this: When American strategy in a critical theater was up for grabs, John McCain proposed a highly unpopular and risky path, which he accurately predicted could lead to success. Barack Obama proposed a popular and politically safe route that would have led to an unnecessary and debilitating American defeat at the hands of al Qaeda.

SO she didn’t pirate it.

It’s still pathetic that she’ll release her hand-selected clips, but not let C-SPAN cover the House as a whole.

Uh oh Woofie, looks like C-SPAN is being inconsistent in enforcing their copyrights:

The problem with Collin’s statement is that it really flies in the face of C-SPAN’s history of sending take-down notices to sites using its content. C-SPAN’s web site indicates that you may not stream C-SPAN content, which Pelosi is clearly doing.

From the WIKI

In Senate and House chambers, live feeds from government-owned recording equipment is released into the public domain as determined by the Speaker and Senate Rules and Administration Committee, respectively.

If there is one legitimate “PBS” use, this is it.

likwidshoe on February 15, 2007 at 04:25 pm

WOOF said, ...released into the public domain as determined by the Speaker and Senate Rules and Administration Committee, respectively.

Right. We get that by now. The question for Democrats is: do you support this ridiculous self serving end of Congressional hearings or do you support the much heralded “full disclosure”?

Answer carefully.

I see, Woofie, so Nancy is just using C-SPAN as her own private propaganda channel.

Nope, no problem there.

Ms. Pelosi is not going to fool anyone into thinking she is even moderately bright.

When Newt and the GOP “young guns” took advantage of C-Span in the early 1990’s, it was to highlight the ineptitude and partisan corruption of their opponents… not their own!

She is speaker of the house. If not bright then clever?

Think Hastert had the same power,
or do you think Pelosi changed the rules?

Don’t play that game, Woofie.  Pelosi is in power now, and she and her Democrats campaigned on more government transparency.

Where are those promises now?

She will do a partial hangout and plead an over exuberance on the part of staffers. Anybody want a piece of this action?

For or against? What scenario do you think she will follow for getting out of this predicament?

Publishing C Span stuff is transparency.

Floor stuff is public domain, committee stuff is copyright.

My opinion, everything that Congreess does in public should be public domain.

WOOF on February 15, 2007 at 06:16 pm

In my opinion every thing elected officials say, write, or do is public domain.

2Hotel9 on February 15, 2007 at 06:25 pm

Oh, and for it to be “transparency” all of it must be disseminated, not just selected pieces. And YES, I hold every member of Congress to that standard.

won’t let C-SPAN show us live footage from the House.

The article you link to is about C-SPAN asking Pelosi to change the rules that Republicans had for 12 years. It doesn’t say anything about her reaction, besides the fact that she “will review request”. What you write is blatant mischaracterization.

Nikolay on February 16, 2007 at 05:59 am

So, nikie, what was her reaction. Please, do tell.

I have no idea. Just as the author of this post, obviously, has no idea—but he preferred to lie.

As far as I understand, linking to an article addressing the Republican practice and a request for Democrats to stop it (with no reference whatsoever to the way they responded; it’s even dated December, before the Congress convened) with “Pelosi won’t let C-SPAN show us live footage from the House” constitutes a lie. Quite a blatant lie.
And would you please be so kind to address me by my name.

p.s. I just lost count of made up stories about Pelosi.

Nikolay on February 16, 2007 at 03:32 pm

Rob posted a piece about the less than honest practices of the Speaker, and hence that makes Rob a liar. Pursue your logic farther, please.

Rob gave a link to an article describing Hastert’s practice and claimed that the article told something about Pelosi’s practice. In what way is it not a lie?
Do you still not get what I say?

Nikolay, has Pelosi suddenly allowed C-SPAN coverage of the House live?

What’s that?  No?

Then shut up.
