Mugabe Stepping Down

WABC 77AM in New York City is reporting that Robert Mugabe is stepping down as president of Zimbabwe.

Mugabe was in negotiations with challenger Morgan Tsvangirai to arrange a settlement after Mugabe lost the national election for president.

Hard-core leftist Mugabe single-handedly destroyed the Zimbabwean economy by appropriating white-owned farm lands, printing money that caused 1,000+ percent inflation, and instituting price controls that caused shortages and literally starved his people.

If he has really been forced out, this is a day of celebration for those who treasure liberty.

Hmmm!  This guy instituted racial discrimination of the type that Obama’s church favors, and also instituted social and economic policies of the type Obama advocates.  Why would we want the same type of leadership here in the US?

If govt control of the economy were the way to go, the Soviet Union would be the richest, most powerful nation in the history of the world.

Thanks to Obama, America remains the only country where it is illegal to drill our own oil!

Curious that you would label Mugabe as leftist, given that violent repression of urban voters, racial minorities, and homosexuals are a halmark of his reign.

But then, I’ve heard others on this site refer to Pinochet as a leftist-liberal, as well.

* on April 1, 2008 at 01:21 pm

*, when someone models their policies after Chairman Mao and the Soviet Union, it’s probably pretty safe to call him a leftist, don’t you think?

And yes, leftists are perfectly capable of oppressing racial and ethnic minorities; just ask the Tibetans, Hmong, Miskito Indians, Mongolians, White Russians, and others how the siren song of socialism protected them. Heck, ask white South Africans how the socialist/communist ANC ruling party has done at protecting their lives since the end of apartheid.

Not exactly a surprise, of course.  State sponsored aggression against racial and ethnic minorities does, after all, require an expansive “state,” does it not?

Homosexuality was and is illegal in communist Red China, the Soviet Union and North Korea. Stalin liquidated entire ethnic minorities during his rule, and Mugabe’s repression of ‘urban voters’ is nothing compared to the show trials, purges and executions that took place in virtually every communist regime that ever took power.

You are describing the exact modus operandi of communists everywhere, so yeah Mugabe is indeed a leftist.

It is either very odd, or very convenient how little leftists know of their own history.

You are a great example, Mr. *

A copy of the liberal Democrat platform?  What we can expect if Obama or Hillary become our president.

One of the most important talents for success in politics is the ability to make utter nonsense sound not only plausible but inspiring. Barack Obama has that talent. We will be lucky if we escape the catastrophes into which other countries have been led by leaders with that same charismatic talent.

This is good news indeed, but it will still take years to undo much of the damage he’s done.

Actually, in an agrarian nation like Rhodesia, two good harvests could fix most of what’s gone wrong, I think.  You just need to keep Mugabe’s thugs away from the levers of power.

Hmmm, I wonder how many people are left that know how to manage a farm.

Ahh, I love leaving confusion and ad hominems in my wake.

It’s almost as if American conceptions of ‘left’ and ‘right’ have no bearing on geopolity as a whole.

And BB, I sincerely hope you’re right, the Zimbabweans need a break. That said, if one kicks all the farmers off their land, all the rain in sub-Saharan Africa won’t necessarily do much good, particularly if nobody knows what to do with it.

Oh, and the 1000% inflation is off by two orders of magnitude. Kinda puts our burgeoning inflation in perspective, though.

Sounds an awful  lot like Hugo Chavez to me.  Fact is, I’m betting Chavez will ultimately have a similarly disastrous effect on Venezuela.  Autocratic dictatorship under the guise of “socialism” has always proven to be a failure.

No one seems particularly confused here except you.

Doesn’t change the fact that Mugabe is a leftist.

Yep, considering that our own inflation rate is less than 3%, you are right that it puts our rate into ‘perspective’.

According to the most recent entry (3-20-08) in the CIA Wold Fact Book (here)
Zimbabwe’s current rate of inflation is “26,470% (according to) official data; private sector estimates are much higher (2007).”

printing money that caused 1,000+ percent inflation

Combined with his race-based confiscation of productive farms and his general foolish Marxist economic policies.  As usual, you miss the big picture.  He ruined the productivity of his system with racial division and Marxism, then tried to cover it up by printing money with no productivity behind it.
As usual, your economic ignorance is on display, Woof.

Most of those policies were also hallmarks of such leftist regimes as USSR, Peoples Republic of China, and Cuba.

Che Guevera engaged in violent repression of racial minoritie and homosexuals. The only reason he probably didn’t repress urban voters is that nobody got to vote under him and Fidel.

In the report the first word in the last line is an ‘If’.
The writer should be more positive and specific in reporting a tenseful situation and not be speculative.
I am monitoring the Radio and TV broadcasts and there is nothing tangible to show negotiations are on.
Influential writers should DEMAND the elections results be published and done with.
When you write please do the right thing and avoid being slipshod.
Mugabe has not appeared in public so far. Opposition leader has held a press conference in which he did NOT claim victory as it may upset the semblance of normalacy maintained now.
That’s the latest from BBC this afternoon.
Thank you.

I am glad to hear that Mugabe stepped down as president. Now he and his cronies can get together and form a guerilla army to fight against the duly elected government, as I am sure they will. This will add further suffering to the people.

ollie-B on April 2, 2008 at 10:07 am

Watashiwa, the only thing that gives me hope that you might be wrong in that assessment is that Mugabe is 40 years older now than he was when he first waged war against the Rhodesian people.  Do guerilla armies provide Geritol and Depends to their members, and don’t you think that they might be able to track him down by locating the discarded Depends?

BTW, Fox and AP are reporting that the elections are indeed going against Mugabe.  Hard to believe that a tinpot dictator would allow this, but somehow it appears to be happening.  Praise God for some very brave people over there.

Having elections is usually the last mistake a commie dictator makes.  Karl Marx certainly didn’t believe in elections.
