Much As I Hate To Admit It, A Hoeven Run At Dorgan May Draw The Strong Challenge Pomeroy Deserves

I’ve made no secrets of my dislike of North Dakota Governor John Hoeven. I think he’s a poor, ineffective leader who does little to advance the limited government movement. That being said, he is the strongest potential challenger for entrenched liberal incumbent Senator Byron Dorgan. He alone among potential challengers has the name recognition and connections to big political money it would take to unseat someone like Dorgan.
While I remain skeptical that Hoeven would be all that much of an improvement over Dorgan, I do think that the down-stream implications for a Hoeven run are worth considering. And among those implications are a strong challenge for another entrenched liberal incumbent, Rep. Earl Pomeroy.
Pomeroy, with his recent arrogance and flip-flopping on health care, may be more vulnerable now than he’s ever been. And whether it be a little-known candidate like Paul Schaffner riding Hoeven’s fund raising and name recognition coat tails to victory, or Hoeven perhaps attracting a more recognized and experienced challenger to the ticket, it’s undeniable that a Hoeven run would not just be a headache for Dorgan but a headache for Pomeroy too.

“I’m pretty confident he’ll be announcing relatively soon.”

    some inside info, Rob? :)

I just can’t stomach seeing that weird little moustache man pretending to be a Republican for another six years.
Better than Dorgan? I honestly don’t know. I just don’t want us to have our own little Olympia Snowe in North Dakota. I’ll probably write in someone or vote for an Independent that is at least honest. I will not vote for John Hoeven and will do my best to make sure other conservatives don’t as well.

most if us here have been begging hovey to resign and run. Well, I have…….

the most important thing it would do; (besides get a liberal out of the governors office) is split up the money between state races. it would help the local races as well. we all know they funnel (directly or indirectly) national cash down to local races here.

Well, well…nothing from from the Oracle of Minot?? ;)

Not fair to leave us hanging Rob ;)

Do you think he will actually run? I think he might, but I do not think he will announce until the absolute last min. After Christmas most likely.

Good post. I think maybe we need more people running for public office vs politicians.

For reason’s that are not totally apparent to me, ND continues to elect dem legislators. Might be the strong presence of the Farmer’s Union. Anyway, a moderate Republican that caucuses with the Republicans has got to be better than the current dems. The only way to get the majority back and with it the committee chairs is to elect Republicans of some sort. Must run/vote for someone that is electable. Do not see the wisdom of conspiring with other conservatives to insure Dorgan and Pomeroy are re-elected.

Rob you should throw your hat in the ring, not against Dorgan but against Pomeroy. He will be the most susceptible.

That’s exactly how the Dems do it. The big three bring in the natinoal money, and it all funnels into the state party and out to the local races. Like 85% of their money comes from out of state, most of it filtered through PACS set up by the “big three.”

Take one of those out, you not only hurt the state party funding but you open up a new stream for Republicans.

That’s an advantage, though Hoeven would control some of the money and it’s hard not to see him hand-picking his buddies in the state to get the money.

But you’re right, the move would also alleviate some of the grid lock. Him moving out of the governor’s office makes room for some others (many of whom are good conservatives) to move up the chain.

    some inside info, Rob? :)

    Let’s just say “no comment.”

Someone called in to my radio show last night asking me to run too.

I’m flattered at the thought, but I’m really not interested in being a politician.

  • sayanything-6955

While Hoeven is not a conservative, he damn sure will bring some national money to a cash strapped ND republican party, and I think you are on to something with helping take Earl apart. I think Earl is in trouble anyway though. And I also think he beats Dorgan too.

  • sayanything-7134

Thats the point isn’t it. You would run on not being a politician. The truth as you see it with no kiss assing to special interest groups. You have your principles, you are articulate and you seem well read on the issues. Money comes from the conservative coalitions. Mr. Hennen pony up.
