More Worrisome News About The Iraqi Constitution

Article 23, Clause 2 of the Iraqi Constitution:

Citizens may not own, bear, buy, or sell weapons, except by a permit issued in accordance with law."

That's pretty weak.

Peenie Wallie has some additional comments:

Unfortunately, after reviewing it in its entirety, I can safely say that this regime will fail, and fail miserably, for a variety of reasons. This "Bill of Rights" is a blueprint for a "cradle-to-grave" socialist regime that would make Hillary Rodham salivate with envy. Under this charter, the government is responsible for economic growth, education, and providing security to a disarmed, emasculated population.

Add this to the anti-Jew statements and I'm beginning to get a bit worried.

I'm not sure I'd go as far as saying that the new Iraqi regime is going to fail, but I haven't read the constitution in its entirety yet. I certainly wish the framers in Iraq would be spending a bit more time patterning the liberties of their country after the liberties held dear in ours.

There is still hope though. The copy made available to us on the internet is just a draft. A draft that has been translated from a language that is pretty remote from our own, no less. Our framers threw around some pretty stupid ideas during the writing of our own constitution. Lets hope the final draft of the Iraqi constitution is better than what we're seeing now.
