More Tax Dollars For Illegal Aliens
Tens of thousands of undocumented immigrant children could gain legal residency and become eligible for in-state college tuition under a bill approved Thursdayby the Senate Judiciary Committee.
The bill's approval by the committee was good news for four Phoenix students facing deportation to Mexico after running afoul of immigration authorities during a field trip last year.
The Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors Act, now moves to the full Senate for a vote. The House has yet to act on a similar bill.
If approved by Congress, President Bush has indicated he will sign the legislation into law.
Sen. Orrin Hatch, R-Utah, insists the measure is necessary to help children whose parents put them in "a Catch-22 situation."
"They did not make the initial decision to enter the United States illegally," said Hatch, who is co-sponsoring the measure with Sen. Richard Durbin, D-Ill.
Under the Senate bill, undocumented immigrants who complete two years of military service or two years of college within six years of graduating from high school could become legal residents.
They also would have to prove that they had lived in the United States for at least five years and that they entered the country before age 16.
The bill would repeal a federal law that bars states from charging in-state tuition rates to undocumented immigrants and would reduce their college costs.
But those who do go on to college still would not be eligible for Pell grants, a popular source of financial aid. They also would be treated like foreign students by having to register with immigration authorities during the school year.
Opponents say the measure could lead to a broader amnesty program for the country's estimated 9 million undocumented immigrants.
Illegal aliens are a problem. Laws like this only encourage more foreigners to gain access to our country and our resources illegally. Somewhere along the way the DREAM Act is going to cost taxpayer's children some opportunities, either through higher taxes on the parents or through less tax dollars being available.
If we're going to pass laws like this why wouldn't a foreigner just jump the border? From their perspective they settle in California with their children form Mexico, they have more children while getting their driver's license and enjoying all of the benefits of American citizenship while paying no income taxes.
This law should not exist. Laws like this one should be repealed and those tax dollars put towards deporting the illegal aliens.
