More On The National Anthem At The World Series

Yesterday I posted on the fact that this nation’s national anthem wasn’t performed at game 1 of the World Series yesterday.  Some claimed that the performance of the national anthem just wasn’t shown on television due to a commercial break, but several people who claimed to have attended the game commented in that post’s thread and stated that the anthem hadn’t been performed at all.

Today it comes out that the anthem definitely wasn’t performed.  Bob Seger, who was supposed to perform it, chose not to.

Bob Seger could barely contain himself when talking Friday about his opportunity to sing “America the Beautiful” before tonight’s World Series opener.

“They called a couple weeks ago,” Seger said, and then whipped into a whirlwind of all the baseball improbables that happily brought the series to Comerica Park.

The choice to sing “America” rather than the “Star Spangled Banner” was his call, he said. The national anthem, he said, “is a death trap for singers. ... At 61, you get smarter.”

All due respect to Seger, but if he can’t sing the song he should have turned the gig down.

As a baseball fan and patriotic citizen I would have preferred to see our national anthem performed.  Especially given our current hostile political environment and the fact that we’re at war.

That commie bastard. Why does Bob Seeger hate America? Why is he rooting for the terrorists? Why does he want our soldiers to die? Doesn’t he know that if our soldiers don’t hear him sing that song, they immediately put down their weapons and surrender? He’s acting like our soldiers are grown men for crying out loud!

The only thing less American than Bob Seeger is baseball, in my opinion.

He’s right about the anthem.  It’s tough for professionals to sing.  The worst version to me was Whitney Huston’s.

Heck the only Whitney Houston I have is the S.S. Banner.

It’s rather odd to abandon the tradition of singing the National Anthem at such Baseball games, but having said that I wish there was a more serious move in this country to change our national anthem.  It is a TERRIBLY difficult song to sing and there are many other beautiful, singable songs that describe the greatness, power, oportunity, and everything else that is so wonderful in America.

America the Beautiful is one of my favorites....

I love our national anthem.

Guess I’m dumb or something.

I agree the song is tough to sing.

But I do get emotional everytime I think of the story.

BTW:  My account didn’t come across the latest upgrade so Rob’s listed as the author of that piece that I wrote.

Ha, who every said you were dumb Rob?  I don’t care for the tune much.  Though I stand and remove my cap and (attempt to) sing along every time it’s played…

Spaghetti, that was a joke.  Guess it didn’t come through in text.

I like the music of the anthem.  It’s our song, and I don’t want to change it.

The National Anthem is a fine song.

Unfortunately, condutors/performers have slowed it down so much it becomes almost unberable.  If we would learn to sing it at a quickerpace, with some force It would be great.

The song’s notes range an octave and a half a stretch for the every day singin in the shower type person.  I beleive it is much better played by a military brass band than sung by anyone. (let alone an aging washed up sell out like Bob Segar)

I rather like it played loudly on an electric guitar a la Jimi Hendrix.

I hate all the inflection some people feel they need to put into it.

Just because you sing like Rob doesn’t mean you’ve got talent.

Either you’re joking and I’m just not following or you’re confused.  I never pretended to sing.  I never said I had talent.  I never said I sing like Rob.  I have no idea what you’re getting at…

Well originally I took your post to be you singing.

After you pointed out my mistake I pretended that you were doing your Rob Port singing impersonation.  A little face saving/joke gesture on my part.

I guess a jokes not funny if no one gets it, but as long as I entertain myself I don’t care.

Well, from whatlittle I know, baseball is the only U.S. sport that ever does play the national anthem, so fuck all you all complainants.  Start pipin’ your noisy pipes about football and baseball.

Whose idea was it to require the singing of the National Anthem or “America” at sporting events, or the recital of the Pledge of Allegiance by youngsters in school? Such rituals reek a bit of the propaganda (Deutschland Uber Alles) used by the Third Reich during WW2 to brainwash the German population. Interestingly, one does not find such nonsense as much in other countries today. Are we so unsure of the allegiance of the American people that we need to constantly remind them in an Orwellian manner to swear in unison to their loyalty and stand ceremonially at events like a bunch of lobotomized robots?

I fully agree with Just. The same applies to all that nationalistic overkill we’re being exposed to, meant to keep us waving flags and backing our president’s screwed up agenda. Just consider the Freedom Tower. What the hell kind of a name is that for the project at Ground Zero? It looks like a cheap attempt to get Americans to think there’s a relation between Freedom Tower and “Iraqi Freedom.” The word freedom has nothing to do with the 9/11 attack. Nobody was trying to take away our freedom when they attacked us (please, no long-winded, contorted philosophical explanations about how 9/11 and freedom are associated). It is a poorly veiled attempt to politicize the issue and erect a monument to George W. Bush who is constantly mouthing off about how “they hate freedom,” “Iraqi Freedom,” freedom this, freedom that. Why not just come right out and call the dam thing the Bush Freedom Tower?
