More On The National Anthem At The World Series
Yesterday I posted on the fact that this nation’s national anthem wasn’t performed at game 1 of the World Series yesterday. Some claimed that the performance of the national anthem just wasn’t shown on television due to a commercial break, but several people who claimed to have attended the game commented in that post’s thread and stated that the anthem hadn’t been performed at all.
Today it comes out that the anthem definitely wasn’t performed. Bob Seger, who was supposed to perform it, chose not to.
Bob Seger could barely contain himself when talking Friday about his opportunity to sing “America the Beautiful” before tonight’s World Series opener.
“They called a couple weeks ago,” Seger said, and then whipped into a whirlwind of all the baseball improbables that happily brought the series to Comerica Park.
The choice to sing “America” rather than the “Star Spangled Banner” was his call, he said. The national anthem, he said, “is a death trap for singers. ... At 61, you get smarter.”
All due respect to Seger, but if he can’t sing the song he should have turned the gig down.
As a baseball fan and patriotic citizen I would have preferred to see our national anthem performed. Especially given our current hostile political environment and the fact that we’re at war.
