More On The Free Speech Cages At The Democrat Convention

Last week I posted about plans to put protesters at this year’s national Democrat convention in fenced-in cages (don’t worry, they’ll be open on top!). Now the Denver Post is reporting on the story:

The fence around the public demonstration zone outside the Democratic National Convention will be chicken wire or chain link, authorities revealed in U.S. District Court today.
That may allow protestors to be seen and heard by delegates going in and out of the Pepsi Center during the convention.
But the American Civil Liberties Union and several advocacy groups have filed an amended complaint to their lawsuit against the U.S. Secret Service and the city and county of Denver that says protestors and demonstrators may have their First Amendment rights violated by security restrictions.
The ACLU has said it wants to avoid the conditions that existed during the 2004 convention in Boston, where protesters were caged, infuriating First Amendment advocates.

You’ll note that the convention held in Boston in 2004 was also put on by the Democrats.
Funny how you don’t hear about protesters being put in cages at Republican conventions.

Yeah, the republicants reserve free speech zones for inauguration parades.

I’m guessing you’re 3 years old, since you don’t remember the free speech zones at the 2004 GOP convention.

They’re like the Democrats crazy uncle who keeps running around without his pants. If he’s doing it somewhere else, then they can pretend he doesn’t exist. When he’s doing it in their own front yard for all the neighbors to see and make an association with them, then it’s time to lock Uncle Joe in the basement.

    Typical.

Face it, Danny…to the dead-enders, IOKIYAR.

    Always. No matter what.

I and 1800 others were caged at the RNC 2004 and held for three days without access to a lawyer.

The Secret Service does NOT routinely do this for Bush.

One article does not a routine make.

The article that you linked states that the protesters were located on a baseball field. Baseball fields have fences. Would you have us to believe that the Secret Service sent an advance team in to fence in the ball field?

There are always designated areas for protesters but the assembly and use of cages simply does NOT happen.

When I attended an event where President Bush spoke in Sept 2006 the protesters were right across the street. The motorcade drove right by them. No fences or cages.

    Jack,

Perhaps the exit sign on the gate read “PULL” and you kept pushing.

    Better luck next time.

The fence around the public demonstration zone outside the Democratic National Convention will be chicken wire or chain link, authorities revealed in U.S. District Court today.

The important issue is if the business end of an electric cattle prod will fit through the wire mesh.

    Huh?

You also don’t hear about conservatives shouting-down leftist lecturers, throwing pies at authors giving opposing views, and just in general being diruptive and trying to squelch speech different than theirs.

  • Hoss

I don’t really care if they put the cages up. Both parties use them for the same purpose: to sequester disruptive leftist assholes.

By the way, that took less than a minute of research.

    Nice research.

For the record it is wrong on both sides. There are reasonable restrictions for safety, but not speech.
