More Lefty Thuggery

This time David Horowitz got a pie in the face.

Indystar – A conservative activist who criticizes what he calls the leftist domination of college campuses was struck with a pie Wednesday night at Butler University.
David Horowitz, president of the Center for the Study of Popular Culture, had just started a lecture at Butler when he was hit.
Horowitz’s supporters followed the assailants out of the hall, and confronted them with what a witness called “pushing and shoving.” However, the attackers got away.
“There’s a wave of violence on college campuses, committed by what I’d call fascists opposing conservatives,” Horowitz said. “It’s one step from that to injury.”
After the incident, Horowitz completed his lecture.

Pat Buchanan gets some salad dressing in the face. Ann Coulter gets chased from the stage by two angry men. William Kristol is also hit with pies. Military recruiters are chased from their posts by an angry mob.
This is the Howard Dean era of political discourse. You can’t just disagree with the “other side,” you must hate them. You must think that they’re evil.
Which is why, as soon as I post this, the comments section below will fill up with lefty’s defending (or at least tacitly defending) the actions of these protesters thugs. But were it Noam Chomsky or Al Franken who got the pie in the face we’d be hearing shrieks of “fascism” and essays on the “chilling effect” the pies were having on free speech from that side of the political spectrum.
Which is the absolute height of hypocrisy.

Moore got a pie in the face, Arnold got an egg on the shoulder. To their credit, neither cried about “thuggery.”

And there’s nothing wrong with pointing out your hypocrisy. You are quick to point out pie throwers, and totally ignore real political violence. The only explanation is whose side you are on.

And nowhere did I “excuse” pie throwing. Unless you think calling it stupid is an excuse.

I’d still like to see Ann Coulter use her conceal carry firearm to defend herself against pies — as she suggested she would. Now that would be some politcal stagecraft.

Maybe that new Florida law could be called the “open season on pie throwers statute.” After all, if you feel threatened by pie-throwers, you would be free to splatter their skulls under such a law.

    Rob,

The recruiters weren’t chased away. Unless sitting down for an hour while a protest was going on and then leaving is being “chased away.” Indeed, you wholly mischracterized the incident and make it sound like there was some sort of Frankenstein monster moment going on.

This is the Howard Dean era of political discourse. You can’t just disagree with the “”other side,” you must hate them. You must think that they’re evil.

No, this is kind of typical and common in American politics historically speaking. Howard Dean ain’t got nothing to do with it.

This reminds me of a story about Lee Atwater (for those of you too young to remember, Atwater was the architect of Bush pere’s election victory in 1988). There was much bitching from the left about Atwater’s tactics in that campaign. Atwater’s response was that the critics couldn’t haver surivived a 19th century political campaign.

    gun-toting liberal,

    She’s probably just a poser. :)

  • Hus

Old Lee was a good guy, BTW. Its too bad Bush pere shit all over him.

    Chris,

Empty partisan bickering seems to be more important sometimes than anything else. You threw a pie! You threatened Michael Schiavo’s life! You wrote a memo! No we din’t! Yes you did! No we didn’t! Yes you did! Well, actually this lower echelon guy did!

If you were to chart a timeline of this B.S. you’d notice that this crap is completely forgotten 99.9% of the time yet the memes both major parties have of each other remain the same. Indeed, that’s what both parties have going for them, no matter how irrational, hypocritical, etc. they become; they’ve established some pretty powerful mind viruses that prove difficult to break away from.

BTW, just as a means to, ah, give “equal time” to liberals, didn’t Michael Moore get plastered with a pie last year? And to give equal time to conservatives, I will respond by saying that no, all that pie on his face was just due to piggish way he eats pies. Fucking happy now? :)

gun-toting liberal said, “And there’s nothing wrong with pointing out your hypocrisy.”

You didn’t point out any such hypocrisy. You created a straw man and then attacked that.

You are quick to point out pie throwers, and totally ignore real political violence.

    Who are you talking to?

And nowhere did I “excuse” pie throwing. Unless you think calling it stupid is an excuse.

Your comments read like you were excusing the behavior.

If one pie-thrower was shot in the head it at least make the others think twice. Wouldn’t it?

It depends on what kind of pie. If someone was taunting us Republicans with cherry pie I might have to give a sermon at the local college about abortion.

Right-wing bloggers are posting wanted posters, talking about “”open season on liberals” and the need to purge universities of the sinister left-wing influences.

How does that justify anything? I doubt any level-minded righty would suggest a pie-in-the-face or death threat is a good way to communicate with the other side. I certianly don’t. I’ve yet to fling a pie at JadeCooper.

And, as far as we know it was one of those Liberal Religious Nuts who mascarade as Right Religious Nuts just so they can make the Daily Show opening monologue. Pure speculation. ;-)

Chris says, “Come on. Since when have pastries been equated with thuggery?”

In addition, that’s a nice rhetorical technique there. Accusing us of the height of hypocrisy for a hypothetical response you cooked up.

Didn’t take you long to make that “hypothetical response” true. Did it?

As Gun-toting liberal alluded to, so is the right. ‘cept they use bigger and more deadly pies.

Huh? Rob talks about the disgusting level of discourse the left is using these days and you bring up murder?!

gun-toting liberal said, “Death threats, an attempted murder-for-hire, and not a peep from those who cry and whine about getting a pie in the face.”

Nobody here is defending that. Doesn’t compare to the behavior in question.

Abortion doctors have been murdered by people on the conservative side of the aisle.

Do you see us here making excuses for the murders gun-toting liberal? What’s your argument?

Right-wing bloggers are posting wanted posters, talking about ‘open season on liberals’ and the need to purge universities of the sinister left-wing influences.

    So what.

But so are claims that pie-throwing and other random idiocy represent my political views.

Sure didn’t take you long to try to excuse it though.

  • Chris

    Thugs?

Why just the other day, my wife and I were walking down the street and these two hoodlums accosted us. I wanted to defend us but my wife held me back and whispered “don’t do it, they’ve got a cheesecake and aren’t afraid to use it.”

Come on. Since when have pastries been equated with thuggery? Bananas, now that’s another story.

Speaking from the left, this kinda stuff annoys me because it tends to delegitimize legitimate complaints. It’s like the ever increasing number of puppets in leftie protests. It just makes the whole thing look silly.

In addition, that’s a nice rhetorical technique there. Accusing us of the height of hypocrisy for a hypothetical response you cooked up.

I’m surprised Ann Coulter didn’t use her gun she constantly brags about to thwart the pastry attack. Ruger is a girls best friend, right? Doesn’t she conceal carry everywhere it’s legal? Or does she just complain about where it’s not?

  • Chris

    Rob,

As Gun-toting liberal alluded to, so is the right. ‘cept they use bigger and more deadly pies.

This conversation has gotten just too silly for me. I’m gonna get some pie and coffee.

  • gun-toting liberal

And I agree, pie-throwers are stupid.

But so are claims that pie-throwing and other random idiocy represent my political views.

Republicans and Democrats both need to heed the advice of JFK. Respond to the message you want, ignore the message you don’t. Doing the opposite leads to the kind of divisiveness we see today.

  • WOOF

There are pies enough for everyone.

  • Chris

Are you equating pie-throwing with death threats?

And another thing, no one has commented on the quality of these pies. They’re usually just whipped cream in an aluminum pan. Cheez! The least they could do is put some effort into it. I for one could stand a good key-lime pie in my face right now…..

Wait. Let me get a cup of coffee first.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

A ridiculous argument Chris. You’re condoning the sort of activity condoned in the post because some anti-abortion activists have resorted to violence.

But feel free to ignore the rampant thuggery on your side. See how many more elections it wins you.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

No, I’m not equating the two. Just pointing out that one doesn’t impact the other.

The left is trying to stifle speech they don’t agree with. That’s wrong, regardless of how you try to minimize it.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Accusing us of the height of hypocrisy for a hypothetical response you cooked up.

Maybe you should go read some of the comments at the posts I’ve linked to.

Gun-toting-liberal, I certainly don’t condone any sort of violence on any side of the political aisle. The fact that I haven’t posted about any murdered abortionists (have there been any lately, since I started this blog?) doesn’t change the fact that the left is trying to stifle speech they do not agree with.

That’s wrong, no matter how you…slice the pie.
    ;-)
