Mitt Romney Is The Underdog?

A reader emails:

After spending 21 million on tv ads twice as much as all the other gop combined [Mitt Romney] is the underdog?

I guess so, but it doesn’t make much sense.
I think it’s part of his whole “I’m the victim” schtick he’s been subtly pushing since his much-hyped religion speech. He wants us to see him as a victim because he’s Mormon. Now he wants us to see him as an underdog victim.
It’s not a bad tactic, I guess, even if it isn’t especially honest. But I doubt the big-money Romney campaign can pull it off.

    Here’s the significance of “Romney as Underdog“, in case you missed it:
    When a candidate thinks he’s going to win big, he brags about it.
    When a candidate thinks he’s not going to win, he tries to lower people’s expectations, so that a second, third or fourth place finish is a “win”…considering all the handicaps he overcame!
    Romney is trying to lower expectations. (Everyone but Bill’s!) :)

    I was just wondering…if Tom Tancredo had been at the top of that LGF poll I quoted instead of Fred, if Bill would have gotten his panties in a bunch asking me five questions about Tom??? :)

    Very insightful. You saw the typical Mormon “we’re the poor persecuted underdog” victim card they always play.

    The Salt Lake Weekly, the independent newspaper there, predicted this Mormon persecution ploy way back in July ’06.

    Here’s the thing that continues to amaze me about Huckabee.

    So far anyway, he is immune to the news cycle. The man has been POUNDED for two weeks just about everywhere. Even the MSM was hard on him about the Dumond thing.

    And yet, his poll numbers just go up and up and up.

    Two possible reasobs:
    1. The pollsters are in the tank for him because they know the Dems will rip him to shreds in the General.
    2. The evangelical base that is giving him the lead pays little attention to the news and really has NO IDEA about any of Huck’s negatives.

    My guess is the latter is more the case.

    First of all…I’m not “in the tank” for any candidate! (Unlike SOME ‘bots here!) :)
    There are things I like about Fred…and Mitt…and Rudy…even John McCain! As I’ve said before, I’m not a fan of McCain for president, but I’d rather have him than Hillary! I’ve written favorable posts about Fred, and Mitt and John and even one about Ron Paul, before I found out what a wackadoo he was! :)

    I haven’t chosen my candidate yet. Let me know when McCain for Pres. gets your donation. It’s tax deductible! :)

    Give me 5 things Fred Thompson has done in his career that qualify him for the White House.

    Just 5 and I will vote for him. That should be easy. Just 5 little real-world accomplishments that qualify him to be the Nation’s Chief Executive.

    Oh, is 5 too hard? Ok, give me 3. Just 3 examples of his executive experience that qualify him to be POTUS. Just 3 and my vote is his.

    If Mike Huckabee can somehow survive the absolute POUNDING he is getting from the blogosphere every day and still win Iowa, maybe he is God’s Chosen Candidate.

    Frankly I have NEVER seen anything like it. Every single forum I read says the same basic thing, “Please God, don’t let us nominate this guy!”

    I’ll be amazed if he survives for three more weeks of this.
