Minnesota Gopher Hockey Player Attempts to Injure Opponent

The problems keep getting worse the for the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.  Their inconsistent officiating has led to an ugly ugly situation last night.

We can only hope the player wasn’t seriously injured by this Bertuzzi like attack.  It reminds me of the incident last week when two Michigan State players went after a player and put him in the hospital overnight.  Both players were suspended by their coach for the remainder of the season.

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen this team goon it up.  Three weeks ago when the Gophers were in Grand Forks a player, the team captain, was told by their acting head coach to get a player.  He wound up diving, leading with the stick, on a Sioux player.  Like last night at that point the Gophers were behind without a chance to get back into the game.

The next time, the coaches son, butt ended a Sioux player, again when the game was out of reach for them.  That wasn’t called by the officials.  Now a Sioux player did challenge that player to fight which was declined by the player.  I’m not saying fighting’s ok in college hockey but it’s a far different thing to challenge a guy to a fight than to jump him from behind and beat him while he’s on the ice.

I guess the easy thing would be to blame the program.  But I think the larger issue is that the WCHA has lost it and it’s going to get uglier before it gets better.

Update:  I read on a message board that the player got a broken ankle when he was attacked.  That’s not official so I won’t change the title to something like Gopher intentionally injures opponent…..
