Minimum Wage Destroys Teenage Employment

We told them so:

This year, it’s harder than ever for teens to find a summer job. Researchers at Northeastern University described summer 2007 as “the worst in post-World War II history” for teen summer employment, and those same researchers say that 2008 is poised to be “even worse.”
According to their data, only about one-third of Americans 16 to 19 years old will have a job this summer, and vulnerable low-income and minority teens are going to fare even worse.
One of the prime reasons for this drastic employment drought is the mandated wage hikes that policymakers have forced down the throats of local businesses. Economic research has shown time and again that increasing the minimum wage destroys jobs for low-skilled workers while doing little to address poverty.
According to economist David Neumark of the University of California at Irvine, for every 10 percent increase in the minimum wage, employment for high school dropouts and young black adults and teenagers falls by 8.5 percent. In the past 11 months alone, the United States’ minimum wage has increased by more than twice that amount.

Now when you consider that only about half a million people were earning minimum wage prior to Congress screwing things up this really comes into focus. What’s the minimum wage supposed to do? Help people. Who is it supposed to help? Low wager earners.
Who has it hurt? Low wage earners. It’s a perfect example of the government hurting the ones they say they’ll help.

Speaking of Tuna, I wonder how Nancy Pant’s friends in the Tuna business are doing under the minimum wage.

Oh yeah, she exempted them because she didn’t want anyone to lose their jobs.

There has never been an instance where an increase in the Minimum Wage has not resulted in a spike in unemployment. The idea that the government is telling the private sector how much to pay its employees (everbody knows the Feds think people can’t be paid enough)is bad enough–but when it does it knowing it will score political points, while hurting the folks its supposed to be helping–well, that’s just special.

Well, the reason some employers don’t hire teenagers nowadays is that they do a crappy job, don’t show up half the time and want a raise within 3 months after being employed.

Also, hiring is slow in areas that are used to hiring illegals and now that the illegals in some areas are leaving, it leaves those employers having to pay minimum wage instead of less.

BTW, here where I live, you can flip burgers and get paid $8.00 an hour, starting wage.

But then again we are an area that has an oil boom going on.

But our gasoline still costs $4.00 a gallon.

Tuna, The left wants to control who enters and exits the workforce. A similar quote was made at the NEA convention by the president sometime around the early 1970s. They want to control people’s freedom. Period.

The influx of invaders into our workforce also directly impacts the ability of teenagers to get entry-level jobs. It’s a double whammy.

Yeah…but when have these things ever not been true of teenagers?
