Military Cuts Equal Job Losses

KSDK — Thousands of jobs could be in jeopardy at St. Louis’ second largest employer: Boeing.
The aerospace company announced the government’s planned defense budget cutbacks will slow production of two locally-built planes and eliminate the jobs of the employees who make them.
…The bottom line is Boeing needs to get through to President Obama, Congress and Secretary Gates. If not, they stand to lose more than 5,000 jobs at Boeing in St. Louis, and 30,000 total local jobs, including suppliers.

I guess elections have consequences. But for an administration more concerned with teaching Chinese hookers to drink responsibly than providing jobs for the heartland of America, no big deal, right? I mean, honestly! Bunch of lousy Red Staters! Probably voted for McCain!

I don’t really care that much about the jobs, but the fact is that maybe an hundred thousand jobs were lost when Obama and Gates canceled the F-22 project.

What I do care about is that our country may not have air supremacy in future conflicts because of Obama’s action.

Conservatives tell us govt expenditure only costs jobs in the long-run. So shurely the free-market is going to employ these people more productively?

The military is funded thru gummint. That means the people who make stuff for the military: planes, tanks, armor, etc…see their jobs go bye bye when the government cuts back on above mentioned items.

Not that that is neccessarily a bad thing…if the gov’t doesn’t need it, it shouldn’t buy it…but it’s not like American airlines is going to pick up the slack in bombers and fighter jets.

Besides, didn’t Obamster (rhymes with “hamster”) say he was going to protect millions of jobs?
Or did he mean, he would protect the jobs, just not the people holding the jobs?

Angry invertebrate rouses himself from his coma to comment!

So shurely (sic) the free-market is going to employ these people more productively?

Boeing is part of the free market. But, if government ever had a role in stimulating the economy, it would be for national defense.

    And don’t call me Shirley!

    Heh.

Conservatives tell us govt expenditure only costs jobs in the long-run.

You’re just making that up. Wasteful govt spending costs every American, short term and long term.
Hate to break it to you, but the defense industry is a monopsony(one buyer), with the govt as the only buyer. Our defense firms can’t go somewhere else for their business, so an appeaser and panderer like Obama just massacres jobs in this industry by his weak stance on national defense.
When Carter did this, we lost Iran to the islamofascists, and President Reagan got blamed for the spending necessary to restore our military to the proper level. As a result, we defeated the Soviet Union. When Clinton weakened national defense, the result was the growth of AQ and the 9/11 attacks, among others, so that President Bush had to spend to recover from 9/11 and had to fight a strengthened AQ in Iraq.
What will Obama’s weakness on national defense cost us, and who will bail us out from his debacle?

“Parochial interests rule,” said Rep. Jeff Flake (R-Ariz.), who supports ending C-17 production.

The plane’s landing gear comes from Cleveland; its cockpit, nose and cargo ramp and door from St. Louis; engines from Connecticut; avionics from Binghamton, N.Y.; tail sections and engine coverings from Dallas; seats from Phoenix; and so on.

The plane provides more than 5,000 jobs in Long Beach and an additional 15,000 elsewhere in the state. Boeing, one of the largest private employers in Southern California with about 25,000 workers, has said that its C-17 plant next to Long Beach airport will shut down in early 2011 without more orders.

“Congress is mainly concerned about protecting jobs,” Thompson said, then paused. “And votes.”
