Michael Moore Being Sued For Big Fat Lie In Fahrenheit 9/11

Awesome...

A double-amputee Iraq-war vet is suing Michael Moore for $85 million, claiming the portly peacenik recycled an old interview and used it out of context to make him appear anti-war in "Fahrenheit 9/11."

Sgt. Peter Damon, 33, who strongly supports America's invasion of Iraq, said he never agreed to be in the 2004 movie, which trashes President Bush.

In the 2003 interview, which he did at Walter Reed Army Hospital for NBC News, he discussed only a new painkiller the military was using on wounded vets.

"They took the clip because it was a gut-wrenching scene," Damon said yesterday. "They sandwiched it in. [Moore] was using me as ammunition."

Damon seems to "voice complaint about the war effort" in the movie, according to the lawsuit.

But what the father of two from Middleborough, Mass., was really talking about was the "excruciating" pain he felt after he lost his arms when a Black Hawk helicopter exploded in front of him.

Damon wasn't expressing any opinion about the war, the suit charges, but rather extolling the drug.

"I just want everybody to know what kind of a guy Michael Moore is, and what kind of film this is," said Damon. He has appeared in two films attacking "Fahrenheit" -"Michael Moore Hates America" and "Fahrenhype 9/11."

Not much to add to that.

Michael Moore is a doofus, and anyone who takes his political commentary seriously is one as well.

Well, we already knew what kind of a guy Bush was, and I hope someone sues him (and possibly the world may still try him) for the disingenuous reasons for the war ON Iraq.

For someone who is so quick to defend Ann Coulter, you gotta lotta nerve calling anyone “a doofus.”

And what happened to “innocent until proven guilty?” You always squeal about that whenever someone trashes DeLay or Abramhoff (people who were actually indicted, not just sued in civil court).

Finally, considering the fact that the movie came out two years ago and Sgt. Damon never said ‘boo’ about it until he figured out a way to make a buck, it smells like one of those frivilous lawsuits you right-wingers are always bitchin’ about.

Where did anyone say Moore was guilty in this instance?  The “doofus” comment was an opinion of Moore’s abilities as a political commentator in general.  It was heavy-handed, but it doesn’t indicate any belief of guilt or innocence on Rob’s part in the matter laid out in the story.

Yes, advocacy groups, but all of these are linked to easily verifiable reports.  The long & short of it is that Moore’s habit of playing fast and loose with the truth sets him up admirably for a lawsuit.

Perhaps you ought to try actually reading the links I provide, which do have footnotes and references by which the allegations can be evaluated.

And for the record, neither link I provided has any links to the GOP.  They are profoundly conservative, but the past few years ought to make very clear that “GOP” and “conservative” are not synonymous.

So GOP smear machine?  Nope, just facts that are awfully uncomfortable for Michael Moore at this moment.

That’s very funny coming from a myopic partisan like yourself.

This is the sort of blind zealotry that David Kopel pushes:

In a democracy, we should try to convince our fellow citizens with facts and logical reasoning.  To manipulate people with frauds and propaganda is to attack democracy itself.

And then he follows it with a list of deliberate lies and distortions made by Moore in his “docufictionary”, starting with Moore’s shameless distortion of the election night events:

Here are the first five lies, according to Kopel.

  1. The Gore “victory” rally isn’t celebrating a Florida win. It was held before the polls had even opened.
  2. Like all the other networks, Fox mistakenly said that Gore had won in Florida. The first network to retract the Florida mistake was CBS, not Fox.
  3. A 6-month study by a consortium of major newspapers shows that Bush would have won the Florida recount under any of the terms which Gore sought in his lawsuits.
  4. Investigation by the Palm Beach Post and others shows that race was not a reason why election officials mistakenly disqualified some voters because they were incorrectly thought to have felony convictions.
  5. Bush’s Presidency before 9/11 was not in serious trouble. No commentator said that he looked like a lame-duck president.
Congress had passed his #1 bill (the tax cut) and was on the way to passing his #2 bill (the education bill).

Getting the order of events wrong, misrepresenting who said what, what they said, when they said it.  How wrong does something have to be, before modern “liberals” will disown it?

In the meantime, here’s an inconvenient truth, fully on topic:

There is considerable buzz surrounding the revelation that the bin Laden Group donated $1 million to the Jimmy Carter Library. It is ironic, obviously, that after Michael Moore made the false claim that President Bush was somehow too cozy with the bin Ladens in his movie Fahrenheit 911, Moore attended the Democratic National Convention in company with Carter, against whom his accusation could have been made with far more justice.

"Finally, considering the fact that the movie came out two years ago and Sgt. Damon never said ‘boo’ about it until he figured out a way to make a buck.” -Don “gobbels” Myers

Don, didn’t I tell you that, when posting on this site, wait at least two or three comments before you pull an OUTRIGHT FUCKING LIE out of you ass?

Damon has been outspoken in his denouncment of Moore’s portrayal of him in F9/11.

here is the NY Post, in its entirety (emphasis mine):

A double-amputee Iraq-war vet is suing Michael Moore for $85 million, claiming he recycled an old interview and used it out of context to make him appear anti-war in “Fahrenheit 9/11.”

Sgt. Peter Damon, 33, who strongly supports America’s invasion of Iraq, said he never agreed to be in the 2004 movie, which trashes President Bush.

In the 2003 interview, which he did at Walter Reed Army Hospital for NBC News, he discussed only a new painkiller the military was using on wounded vets.

“They took the clip because it was a gut-wrenching scene,” Damon said Tuesday. “They sandwiched it in. [Moore] was using me as ammunition.”

Damon seems to “voice complaint about the war effort” in the movie, according to the lawsuit.

But what the father of two from Middleborough, Mass., was really talking about was the “excruciating” pain he felt after he lost his arms when a Black Hawk helicopter exploded in front of him.

Damon wasn’t expressing any opinion about the war, the suit charges, but rather extolling the drug.

“I just want everybody to know what kind of a guy Michael Moore is, and what kind of film this is,” said Damon. He has appeared in two films attacking “Fahrenheit”—“Michael Moore Hates America” and “Fahrenhype 9/11.”

In “Fahrenheit 9/11,” the bandaged National Guardsman is shown laying on a gurney complaining that he feels like he’s “being crushed in a vise. But they [the drugs] do a lot to help it and they take a lot of the edge off it.”

His image appears seconds after Rep. Jim McDermott (D-Wash.) says, “You know, they say they’re not leaving any veterans behind, but they’re leaving all kinds of veterans behind.”

Damon—the dad of an 8-year-old girl and a 4-year-old boy—doesn’t come close to feeling that way.

“He couldn’t have picked the worst guy to say that about,” he told The Post.

“I’m the most fortunate disabled guy. I’ve even had a house built for me [by a nonprofit group, Home for Our Troops].”

Particularly outrageous to Damon is the fact that Moore never interviewed him or asked his permission to use the old clip.

“I was complaining about the pain I would’ve been having [if it weren’t for the painkiller],” he said.

NBC is named in the suit—which was filed in Suffolk County, Mass., on Friday—along with Harvey and Robert Weinstein, Miramax Corp., Lions Gate Films and other production companies involved with the picture.

Newsman Brian Williams ends the NBC clip by adding, “These men, with catastrophic wounds are ... completely behind the war effort,” according to the lawsuit.

That part, which wasn’t shown in the Moore movie, is a far more accurate depiction of Damon’s feelings, he said.

Lawyer Dennis Lynch said he took the case last year and they held off filing the lawsuit in a bid to settle the matter.

“We attempted to resolve the situation amicably with Mr. Moore [for a year] but he refused,” he said.
Damon is asking for up to $75 million because of “loss of reputation, emotional distress, embarrassment, and personal humiliation.”

In addition, his wife is suing for another $10 million because of the “mental distress and anguish suffered by her spouse.”

Don is good at acting the ass, but is pathetic about getting the facts right.  Here’s a partial transcript from Fahrenheit 9/11:

Did the last four years not really happen? Look, there’s Ben Affleck. He’s often in my dreams. And the taxi driver guy. He was there too. And little Stevie Wonder, he seemed so happy, like a miracle had taken place. Was it a dream? Or was it real? It was election night 2000 and everything seemed to be going as planned. Series of news clips: In New York, Al Gore is our projected winner. / The Garden State is green for Gore. / We project that Mr. Gore is the winner in Delaware. This state has voted with the winner in… / (Tom Brokaw interrupts) Mike, you know I wouldn’t do this if it weren’t big: Florida goes for Al Gore. / CNN announces that we call Florida in the Al Gore column. NARRATOR: Then something called the Fox News Channel called the election in favor of the other guy. BRIT HUME: Sorry to interrupt you; Fox News now projects George W. Bush the winner in Florida and thus it appears the winner of the Presidency of the United States. NARRATOR: All of a sudden the other networks said, “Hey, if Fox said it, it must be true.”

Here’s the actual timeline:

circa 7:45PM:  Voters News Service calls Florida

7:49PM:  NBC calls Florida for Gore

7:50PM:  CBS calls for Gore

7:52PM:  Fox calls for Gore

These calls were all before the polls had closed in western
Florida, costing Bush thousands of potential votes on the predominantly Republican Panhandle.

8:02PM:  ABC calls for Gore (only major news network to wait until polls had closed)

9:38PM: VNS issues advisory canceling their original call

10:00: red-faced Dan Rather is first to declare Florida too close to call, apologizes:

This knock-down drag-out battle drags on into the night. And turn the lights down; the party just got wilder. To err is to human--is human, to really foul up requires a computer. And that’s what’s happened with Florida. Everybody that we know of had put Florida into the Gore column sometime ago. Now we’re pulling it back into the undecided column because some bad data came from certain precincts in Florida. . . . This thing is so wild, wacky and wooly, nobody knows how it’s going to come out

2:16AM:  After most precincts have reported, Fox News is the first to call Florida for Bush.  At this point, Bush had a 50,000 vote lead according to the Florida Election Commission

2:18 AM: CNN declares Florida for Bush
2:20 AM: ABC reluctantly calls for Bush:

Unless there is a terrible calamity, George W. Bush, by our projections, is going to be the next president of the United States

2:30 AM:  Gore calls Bush and concedes

3:30 AM: 50,000 vote margin shrunk to hundreds.  Gore calls Bush and withdrawals concession.

3:59 AM: CBS, NBS retract their call for Bush

Michael Moore’s version?  Not even close to the truth. He’s an embarrassment to his own cause.
