MGM To Remake Red Dawn

But the movie is going to need some updating.  After all, Reagan polished off the Soviets a long time ago and even with a healthy Fidel Castro the idea of Cuba pulling off a convention invasion of America to any widespread extent is laughable.

So who will the bad guys be?  Islamic terrorists?  They don’t fight conventional wars.  I’d say the best bet would be North Korea and/or China.  Or maybe Venezuela?

Knowing Hollywood, though, it’ll probably be a private force of Blackwater-type mercenaries hired by Republicans to usurp the White House from a Barack Obama lookalike.

Frankly, it was amazing Hollywood made the original version of this movie.

Absolutely, without a doubt, the best motion picture of the 1980s.

I wasn’t even quite a teen yet when Red Dawn came out.  It’s no great work of film art, but it’s entertaining in a “guilty pleasure” sort of way.

Red dawn is largely a futility of war movie.
Most of the protagonists killed. civilian populations wiped out, third countries drawn in (1 billion screaming Chinamen?).  Collaborating with the enemy and betrayal.
No end in sight.

Rather than a remake, maybe a sequel?

Yeah, given Hollywood’s ideological leanings, I’m not holding out hope of a remake faithful to the original.

But, on the other hand, if a miracle of miracles occurs, and they do it the way it should be done (terror-crazed Islamic extremists attempt to invade Bitter America and get their asses handed to them), how many box office records would it utterly demolish?

Do you go to bed fantasising yourself being a “terror-crazed Islamic extremist” allienating superhero.
Do you dream crazy assed stupid shit like that all night?
Well wake up bud. I ain’t happening. No one is going to invade US.
So..... Down boy. Sit down.....

I believe the original Red Dawn was a miscalculation on the part of Hollywood lefties.  It was based on the mistaken assumption that the Soviets and their allies could conquer the US, and by politcal means.  I think the triumph of a few individually independent Americans was never meant to overshadow their doctrine that the US was so weak it could be conquered.  I think the validation of the Second Amendment and militias was unconscious, and certainly unintentional.
I loved the movie, btw.

If you don’t know by now, don’t mess with it.

As you guys have pointed out thousands of times on this blog, overtly political films do not do well at the box office. I’m not sure what makes you think that trend will stop here.

Remember “The Russians are Coming?” That was an attempt at trying to paint those friendly communists as so nice and we should welcome them.  Somehow, hollywood glosses over the one-hundred million innocent civilians that Stalin and the USSR murdered and the New York Times hid.

There is a novel called “Invasion” in which the Chinese begin their move to control most of the world and wipe out much of the Navy (carrier groups) and end up invading the US, using Mobile as a landing place.

I can’t think of the author (wish I could because I’d love to read it again). Hell of a book. Some of the characters are SF types and it refers to “insurgents”. I’m wondering if they’re taking anything from that novel?

Anybody else read it?

No, but Red Storm Rising was a good one.  I think Clancy wrote it.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

You were probably joking, but I think it is possible they would make such a ridiculous movie.

I’m predicting that the villains in the remake will be polluters or other anti-environment types. Hollywood is ever alert for fresh, new propaganda.

(1 billion screaming Chinamen?)

Jed Eckert: ...Well, who *is* on our side?
Col. Andy Tanner: Six hundred million screaming Chinamen.
Darryl Bates: Last I heard, there were a billion screaming Chinamen.
Col. Andy Tanner: There *were*.

The first one was an excellent show, but I’m guessing they’ll screw it up this time.

: It’s 11:59 on Radio Free America; this is Uncle Sam, with music, and the truth until dawn. Right now I’ve got a few words for some of our brothers and sisters in the occupied zone: “the chair is against the wall, the chair is against the wall”, “john has a long mustache, john has a long mustache”. It’s twelve o’clock, American, another day closer to victory. And for all of you out there, on, or behind the line, this is your song.

I’m guessing it will some international conglomeration, maybe Walmart, with Baptists and/or Catholic collaborators.

I watched this a few nights ago.  Helluva film.  And Woof’s read on the film is hilarious.  “Futility of war?” More like the ugly necessity of war, especially when you are attacked by an aggressor nation.  Yes, all the protagonists die, but it’s in defense of their home.  They give their last full measure of devotion for the freedom of their country.  And it’s clear that they knew what they were doing, and knew how it would end for them.  And as the dialogue indicated, people heard about their bravery outside of the enemy-occupied zone and took hope and inspiration from it.

If there were every a film to make the case for a well-armed citizenry, this would be it.
