Merry Christmas: North Dakota Man Gets Visit From Police Chief Over Inappropriate Reindeer Display

And apparently someone wants to make a 1st amendment issue out of this:

A Hazen, North Dakota man was visited by the chief of police this evening, and apparently chief Chuck Dahl wasn’t buying into the holiday spirit. The resident exhibited 2 reindeer fornicating in his front lawn, and amid citizen complaints was paid a visit by the City of Hazen Chief of Police, Chuck Dahl. Chief Dahl wasn’t available for comment, but the resident, who at this time wishes to remain anonymous , says that he was threatened with charges of disorderly conduct if he didn’t remove the fornicating reindeer. Chief Dahl allegedly informed the resident that the Hazen city attorney may be contacting him regarding disorderly conduct charges. Says the resident “This could make an interesting First Amendment case”.

This is a CNN “iReport” and is apparently unverified as of right now.
All joking aside (it is pretty hilarious) and supposing this is true I’ve made my feelings about overly-broad “disorderly conduct” laws clear before. While this man’s holiday display may be in poor taste, I am not in favor of authorities using vaguely-written laws to enforce their own standards on the populace.

    Please… this is about as far from pornography as you can get. I grew up on a farm and the animals had no idea they were engaging in pornography when they decided to bread outside of the barn in broad daylight. Sex education was no mystery to us. We say it at least once a week. Cows, horses, sheep, hell the rooster would top a hen every few minutes. This is funny, maybe a little adolescent, but funny.

    There is a vast difference IMO from nature taking its course without regard to viewers, while it is another thing entirely to stage such, even animal images, of sexual intercourse near a public sidewalk, solely designed to shock and to cause children to be exposed without parental consent.

    It is amazing to me, and I want to say I am no exception, that even people claiming to be Christians would not be offended, even in the name of humor, by a deliberate display of sexual images of animals designed to shock people and expose innocent children to such subject matter. I wonder if Jesus saw this display, would he laugh, would He think it is just innocent fun? My guess is you, rbb, Dino and most here would think the answer is yes! I wonder if that is true and I am wrong why we have nothing recorded about His sexual sense of humor in the Bible?

    I saw this on the news last night. His deer were stolen, so who knows what he will do next.

    He does seem to be a jerk, and this is in poor taste, but…shrug…it is his yard and it isn’t illegal.

    His next door neighbors were divided. The wife didn’t like it, the husband thought it was quite funny. I think that is how it would play out here. I think it is obnoxious, but my husband would find it hilarious.

    I do not know about local laws; but as a general rule it is illegal, because it portrays a pornographic image that can easily be seen from a public sidewalk accessible to the general public and exposes innocent children to sexual images. This man is not a jerk, he is a pornographer and should have been arrested and fined.

    I’ve got neighbors who put out their lighted deer every Christmas season. And every year the very same thing happens to those deer sometime during the night. Odd how that happens.

    If the police in Hazen have nothing better to do than this, then Hazen obviously has too many police officers.

    Note to the above lynching display, why is it people find it safe to attacks certain groups or people? As he said, it wouldn’t have gone over very well if he would have done Obama…ya think?

    Havens, who lives on Schuyler County Route 15 (Ridge Road) just south of Odessa, this week set up a Halloween display featuring mannequins that look like Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and Republican rival John McCain.

    But the Obama figure looks like he is running, and the McCain likeness is dressed in the hooded robe of the Ku Klux Klan and is carrying a baseball bat.

    Havens is quick to point out he is a liberal and a big supporter of Obama, and that the scene is meant to provoke thought about the way he believes Obama has been unfairly treated by the McCain campaign.

    “I figured it would be equally offensive to everyone. It’s just for shock value,” Havens said. “McCain has been rabble-rousing, calling Obama a terrorist and a Muslim. The McCain campaign has gotten so ugly. That’s what the message is. I can see how people could take this the wrong way. I’m not advocating anything. It’s sarcasm.”

    As I said, some people are just looking for attention.
    I don’t believe it is illegal, just in bad taste.
    I also believe that if he wasn’t charged at that point, the Hazen city attorney may be contacting him regarding disorderly conduct charges comment by the Chief of Police was a scare tactic to try and get the person to take down the display.

    Considering that, in the time of Jesus children saw animals having sex and getting slaughtered, Jesus would probably find such a thing mild. But he’d tell the guy not to deliberately try to anger his neighbors.

    Trying to bring Jesus into this is an even bigger reach than before.

    You haven’t been visiting Western PA have you? One of my neighbors displays seems to have the same randy reindeer problem. Everything normal for a while and then all of a sudden they’re getting their freak on. Funny how that happens.
