Media Spinning/Whitewashing Ayers Connections For Obama

Sarah Palin launched a broadside on Obama by accusing him of “palling around with terrorists” like William Ayers. Now the Media is in full spin mode to protect Obama.
Here’s CNN’s spin:

Obama and Ayers, now a university professor, have met several times since 1995, when both orked with a non-profit group trying to raise funds for a school improvement project and a haritable foundation. CNN’s review of project records found nothing to suggest anything nappropriate in the volunteer projects in which the two men were involved.

Of course, the problem with Obama’s connections to Ayers isn’t that they did anything inappropriate or illegal together. The problem is that Ayers is an unrepentant bomb-setter, a far-left radical, and Obama the “change” and “new politics” candidate associated with him, worked for him, for years. It wasn’t just a “met several times” situation. Obama worked for Ayers, who founded the Annenberg Foundation. Obama launched his first campaign for political office from Ayers’ home.
The problem with Rev. Jeremiah “God Damn America” Wright was that Obama was attending his church and calling him his “spiritual mentor” and “sounding board” while the guy was damning America from the pulpit, blaming 9/11 on us instead of the terrorists and accusing the American government of manufacturing AIDS to kill off black men. This is the same problem with Ayers. While Ayers was telling people that he wasn’t sorry for setting bombs in the 1960′s to terrorize the American public, Obama was his friend and colleague.
That may not be a problem for liberal reporters, but for a lot of Americans that’s a big problem. And it should be reported.
The Associated Press weighs in as well, calling Palin’s accusation against Obama a “smear.”

…Palin’s attack shows that her energetic debate with rival Joe Biden may be just the beginning, not the end, of a sharpened role in the battle to win the presidency.
“Our opponent … is someone who sees America, it seems, as being so imperfect, imperfect enough, that he’s palling around with terrorists who would target their own country,” Palin told a group of donors in Englewood, Colo. A deliberate attempt to smear Obama, McCain’s ticket-mate echoed the line at three separate events Saturday.

Smear? Since when is the truth a smear? A smear is a lie made up to disparage the candidate. A bit of inconvenient truth about a candidate’s past professional and personal relationships is just the truth regardless of its inconvenience for the candidate the media has clearly chosen.
Oh, and by the way, did you know that associating Obama with Ayers is racist? This is form the same AP article:

Palin’s words avoid repulsing voters with overt racism. But is there another subtext for creating the false image of a black presidential nominee “palling around” with terrorists while assuring a predominantly white audience that he doesn’t see their America?
In a post-Sept. 11 America, terrorists are envisioned as dark-skinned radical Muslims, not the homegrown anarchists of Ayers’ day 40 years ago. With Obama a relative unknown when he began his campaign, the Internet hummed with false e-mails about ties to radical Islam of a foreign-born candidate.
Whether intended or not by the McCain campaign, portraying Obama as “not like us” is another potential appeal to racism. It suggests that the Hawaiian-born Christian is, at heart, un-American.

Of course, this all kind of falls apart when you consider that the terrorist Palin is associating Obama with is a white male.

They’re trying to shut her up. I hope McCain, Mr reach across the isle, doesn’t get cold feet. The information on this post alone HAS to be presented to counteract the smear and racism charges.

Obama’s first “job” as a “community organizer” was paid for by the Woods Fund, on who’s board Ayers sat. So Obama has a long history of being indebted to this extremist.

Long prior to Obama’s being on various boards with Ayers, the two worked together well before Obama ever went to Harvard.

Ayers and Obama were both active in the successful campaign in 1988 to establish a teacher/principal watchdog group, Local School Councils, in the Chicago public schools. The LSC’s have been called a form of teacher-bashing by union activists.

Yes, Obama and Ayers helped establish Local School Councils so their followers could intimidate teachers.

Through the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, Obama and Ayers were able to divert money that should have gone to classrooms and students. Where did that money get diverted? To radical groups like ACORN, to indoctrinate at risk kids in their ideology of America-hatred and victemology.

Finally…Ayer’s selected Obama, a recent law school graduate, with a spotty work history and no administrative experience to hear a multi-million educational “reform” organization based on their earlier relationship.

–Ayers did not found the Annenberg Foundation, a republican, Walter Annenberg founded and funded the Annenberg Foundation. Walter Annenberg served as an ambassador for President Nixon and was a good friend of President Ronald Reagan.
–The Annenberg Challenge was supported by republican governor Jim Edgar. It was funded by republican donors.
–Ayers did not bring Obama into the Annenberg Challenge, Deborah Leff did when they served on another board together.

Never let a good smear using your definition get in the way of the facts.

Please do you homework and not simply repeat what you read on other blogs.

But as long as we are playing 6 degrees of separation here, let’s play. Hmmmm… Ayers is currently a distinguished scholar at the University of North Carolina, where Governor Mark Sanford, a repulican, serves on the Board of Trustees. Ooops. I’ll wait for Palin to claim that Sanford (on the short list for Veep for McCain) is “palling around with Ayers” as well.

Obama’s campaign says he met Ayers in 1995.

In fact, an exchange of letters in late 1994, copies of which I obtained from Brown University and links to which are provided below, between Vartan Gregorian, then President of Brown and the individual responsible for assessing applications for grants from the national Annenberg Challenge, and Bill Ayers, the founder of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, demonstrates that Ayers played a direct role in “composing” the Challenge’s board of directors.

In August of 1994, Leff wrote a letter to Brown’s Gregorian lauding Bill Ayers for his leadership in organizing the grant application and said that her Joyce Foundation was awarding $80,000 to his Annenberg working group, the Chicago School Reform Collaborative, to continue their work to secure and establish the Annenberg program. This Collaborative was the group which Ayers represented when he submitted the final Annenberg grant application in November.

Ayers was not the founder of the Annenberg Challenge, but he was the founder of the Chicago Annnenberg Challenge, and was the official agent to receive the grants.

Why is this important by the way?

if it is true that Ayers played a role in Obama’s selection it indicates that Ayers and Obama had a pre-existing relationship.

If Ayers and Obama did have a pre-existing relationship it undermines claims by the Obama Campaign that the relationship between Ayers, an authoritarian political figure who once engaged in bombings to implement his politics, was “tenuous” or “casual” and that Ayers was just a neighbor of Obama’s in Hyde Park.

According to the Obama campaign and now according to emails I have received from the New York Times, Ayers had “nothing” to do with the selection of Obama for the board Chairmanship.

They claim that according to Deborah Leff and Patricia Graham that only Leff and Graham recruited and nominated Obama, respectively. However, in their published story the Times did not quote Leff to that effect. Neither did the Obama campaign in its statement on the matter. I have asked the Times for clarification.

To accept the story 14 years later of the Times and the Obama campaign requires us to conclude that Leff, unilaterally against her own board of directors (which in November added Obama), went around the back of Bill Ayers to impose on him secretly Barack Obama as the chair of the Annnenberg Challenge! That is a remarkable conclusion – and of course one that is not yet backed up by Leff herself!

Why not? Most likely because Leff as a lawyer understands now as she did then that whatever her personal role in the selection process, the legal power that Ayers possessed, as the agent of the CAC grant recipient – the Collaborative, to either reject or accept Obama as CAC Board Chairman was clear.

Thus, while Ayers may not have suggested the Obama name directly to Leff, only Ayers could approve of the appointment of Obama. No one else possessed the legal power to do so.

So Ayers and only Ayers had the power to put Obama in charge of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge.

Why is this so hard to understand?
Obama and Ayers clearly had similar goals, at least with regards to politics and education.

I believe that Obama and Ayers shared a similar world view with respect to education issues, at least. For example, during their time together running the Chicago Annenberg Challenge they supported funding for groups like the Small Schools Workshop and Local School Councils. These groups were criticized as engaging in “teacher bashing” by union activists and as a “political threat” to school principals by Arnold Weber, a fellow Annenberg board member.

A candidate’s track record, and associations are always a legitimate issue when running for President. Let’s take a look at the qualifications, judgement, and experience of Obama, who is running for President. Obama had 25 years to fulfill the potential he displayed as a rising start at Harvard Law School … and, how did he live up to that potential? … He chose to align himself with anti-American racist, Jeremiah Wright for TWENTY YEARS … along with Ferrahkan, Rezko, Ayers, and others. As a community organizer, he registered thousands of voters in Chicago … then, when he ran for the state legislature, he took away their votes, by disqualifying his opponent (a black woman) on a technicality. As a U.S. Senator, he voted present 160 times … he never called a meeting on the Afghanistan committee he chaired (although he NOW says we must shift all our military from Iraq to Afghanistan). He claimed Foreign Policy experience from a 9 day whirlwind photo op to 6 countries. And, he spent almost half of his tenure neglecting his responsibilities as a U.S. Senator, so he could run for President. Senator McCain served America honorably for 22 years in the military. He proved his love for America, as well as his honor, integrity and character, by refusing early release as a P.O.W., even while being tortured. He served America as a â€˜contributing’ U.S. Senator, working across the aisle, for 20 years. If Obama’s Twentyfive year track record shows he lacks judgement, and can’t be trusted, who cares what he says about Health Care and the Economy! What Obama never learned is Character. He simply can’t be trusted … ask Jeremiah Wright, a friend of 20 years, who Obama betrayed for personal ambition … and, you Obama supporters really think he won’t betray you If he gets elected??? If he gets elected, you Obama supporters will be facing a HUGE disillusionment !!!
