Media Fawns Over Obama Saluting Caskets Of Fallen Soldiers From Afghanistan

Taken by itself, our commander-in-chief showing respect to the fallen is heart warming.
That being said, it’s hard not to see it as so much political theater intended to cover up the fact that Obama continues to be something less than a leader on Afghanistan choosing to dither on making a decision in the war while our troops fight and die and suffer from disillusionment in a mission they’re not even sure will ever matter.

Standing in the pre-dawn darkness, President Barack Obama saw the real cost of the war in Afghanistan: The Americans who return in flag-covered cases while much of the nation sleeps in peace.
In a midnight dash to this Delaware base, where U.S. forces killed overseas come home, Obama honored the return of 18 fallen Americans Thursday. All were killed this week in Afghanistan, a brutal stretch that turned October into the most deadly month for U.S. troops since the war began.
The dramatic image of Obama on the tarmac was a portrait not witnessed in years.

Our troops don’t need salutes at this point. They need leadership. And Obama is sadly bereft of that quality.
And this isn’t asking him to “rush” a decision on Afghanistan. He campaigned on finishing the war there. He’s had months and months to consider the issue. There’s no reason he can’t make a decision now. Other than politics, which he clearly values more than the lives of our troops.

And now we have the 1st grade playground argument. Its Barri’s turn? Right?

  • sayanything-2407

    Questions that come to mind:

Is this the first time caskets have returned home since he has been president?

When Caskets have returned home, where was he during that time?

Why is he there NOW? Was he in the neighborhood? What makes this time anymore worthy of his time than any other?

Why is the media suddenly interested in the caskets returning home NOW? Is it because he is there? The media was all about the caskets with Bush, not so much now that Obama is president, why?

Again, if this was not the first time caskets have returned home, why is this or his presence suddenly a need at this time? Why now? Where was he before?

When you look at this picture, try asking those questions.

  • sayanything-2819

The motives of this president do not detract from the sacrifice of these souls nor does it detract from the respect and honor due them by the CinC. Like many, I question the why of this. I would add to the questions listed previously these….

Did Pres. Bush do this as well?
    If he did, how often?

I can’t help but be suspicious of Obama’s actions in this regard.

With an administration so enamored with image, was this done merely in an attempt to enhance the image of Obama? He has never shown any particular regard or respect for the military, why now?

  • sayanything-2

From the Drill&Ceremonies manual I was instructed from he is not to salute, though other Presidents have in the past, it is not rigidly enforced. CinC or not, he is a civilian.

Sanity, I wondered those very questions when I saw this in WaPo, almost in that very order.

  • sayanything-2

“the stark reality of seeing that will most likely sink in.” No, it won’t.

  • sayanything-4124

I personally know that morale is down with many, because of this floundering that is perceived, rightly or wrongly, BUT, all that being said, the CIC is a heavy, heavy burden, and whether he is visiting troops or not, I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt about his sincerity in this.

Even if you do not believe he is sincere, you should see this as a good thing. The actuality of seeing those caskets come off the plane will most likely give him pause, so even if you believe this is a publicity stunt, the stark reality of seeing that will most likely sink in.

  • Jay

Also Hotel, you realize who started this practice right?

    You’re pal Ronnie.

  • sayanything-2

Ah, no. He is not a serving member or veteran of the military, therefore he is not entitled to use the salute. And yes, I have pointed out other politicians saluting when they are not entitled to do so.

  • sayanything-2

Why was he saluting? He has never served and is not entitled or authorized to salute anyone.

  • Name

    aka Anna
I saw nothing but smugness on his face and him sticking his nose in the air… it makes me sick to watch him pretend to be so high and mighty and loyal. I call fake on this one. If not for beneifting from the extra publicity I don’t believe he would have done it

  • sayanything-42

How many wounded has he visited in hospital? How many letters has he personally written and signed? How do Obama’s numbers in those two areas compare with George W. Bush’s numbers?

  • Name

As Commander in Chief of the Military forces He should be there and honor our fallen but as Rodney has alluded he should visit the wounded etc. However as Commander in Chief it is completely up to him as to what level of respect he can or will show. The facts are this. While he may be Commander in Chief there can be no doubt that he is a poor leader for our troops and our country. Indecision whether on the battle field or stateside always will result in poor results.
The real shame here is that the greatest country in the world elected this man to be the leader of our brave and honorable troops. It is not as if his Character flaws were not evident prior to the election. My prayers go out to the families of our soldiers both fallen and still serving. I pray that this President will wake up and lead our soldiers to true victory but I will not hold my breath.

  • jimmypop

if he meant it, it would be cool.

  • sayanything-106

just for the record OBAMA needs to pee or get off the pot this drawn out slow decision wether we
need more troops or not is starting to get a little old.

  • cat007

Less than a leader? You guys are less than losers, losers with any dignity that is. Talk about bad sports. You have no class at all. America and the world have come back from a terrible ordeal, and all you can say is how it should have been better. Shame on you! Show a little class. Quit being such a poor sport. You’ve been listening to hate radio way too long. There are no answers there. It reminds me of the sixties with Abby Hoffman and Jerry Rubin. There was going to be a “revolution”. Get over it.

  • zayas

Yea… And Bush made you better…

  • AKA WOOF

There’s a high profile motivational speaker
just started working that could be sent over to the troops.

  • Jay

“Why was he saluting? He has never served and is not entitled or authorized to salute anyone.”

You do realize that it doesn’t matter if he’s served. He is in the chain of command. The CinC is supposed to return hand salutes from further down. In addition, he has the option (I believe) of saluting or putting his hand over his heart for retiring a flag or other appropriate ceremonies.

Or should the military not salute him because he’s a Democrat?

Also, nice to see that Rob has adopted the newest Republican meme (“dither”) from the village idiot. God knows we wouldn’t want to get off message.

  • sayanything-2407

I have a healthy distrust of anything the government does.

With so much of what Obama does to be all about him, makes me wonder if this was nothing but a publicity stunt and photo op for him to prop up his sagging poll numbers.

More people should have a healthy distrust of government and question what is happening. Just like Magicians, the government likes to use smoke and mirrors – show you one thing while they are actually doing something else.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

Well a comparison like that might not be fair. At this point in Bush’s 1st term in office we weren’t at war.

But even so, I’m less concerned about those things than I am about him doing the big things. Like making decisions and being a leader on the war. I agreed with his position on Afghanistan during the campaign. He wanted to win the war.

    Where’s that President now?

  • MarkSD

When I heard this morning about Obama doing this and meeting with the families, I wondered how many families would tell him exactly how they feel about his CiC leadership.

I know I would’ve given him an earful. That picture of him saluting the caskets sickens me.

  • sayanything-2361

I wondered if he’s allowed because he’s president, I’d have to stand with hand over heart. I just assumed he would too.

You gotta love how the guy lecturing us on being classy is calling talk radio “hate radio.”

    Classy.
