McCain: When I’m President We Won’t Let Exxon Make Record Profits

It’s kind of hard to take McCain seriously on his criticism of Obama’s wealth redistribution policies when he starts spouting nonsense like this:

I mean, c’mon. Making profits doesn’t make Exxon bad. Making profits makes Exxon good.
In the midst of an economic downturn, do we really want punishing new regulation and taxation on some of our most successful companies?

Why is no one talking about the record amount of taxes paid by Exxon-Mobil and other energy companies?

And Rob, this headline is wrong. You really should correct it and update this post to the correct statement.

  • robert108

The meme of “corporate giveaways” assumes that govt owns all the money. Not in this country. The govt only has the money it confiscates from the private sector. Taxes above the legitimate expense of govt is a “taxpayer giveaway”, except that it’s taken, not given.

Wonder how lone it’s going to take Exon to move completely out of the States?

  • di butler

He’s doing just what Obama did last night. They are both trying to court the “middle” in the last days. I don’t like it, I can’t believe it helps either one of them.

  • bill-tb

Every once in a while, something shakes loose… sigh :( )

  • http://bullwinkleblog.com/ Bullwinkle

“Corporate giveaways” translate to higher revenue, something the Left refuses to admit.

should have been “…even though that’s something the Left refuses to admit.”

“Corporate giveaways” mean higher profits for corporations that get sent out to stockholders in the form of dividends that are taxed at a higher rate than a corporation’s profits.

Since the Left has been telling everyone that corporations are evil they keep blocking them but in truth what the Left really wants is a piece of the stockholder’s pie without appearing to be going after it.

  • http://bullwinkleblog.com/ Bullwinkle

It’s a good point but McCain could have and should have made it clearer. The funny thing is that “corporate giveaways” is pandering to the Left. Exxon’s taxes as a corporation are lower than their stockholder’s taxes. “Corporate giveaways” translate to higher revenue, something the Left refuses to admit.

BTW Mickey, I might be interested in your Exxon stock if the price is right.

    What McCain actually said was:

“…Senator Obama voted for billions in corporate giveaways, I voted against it. When I’m president we’re not going to let that happen.”

That’s from what your headline says he said:

When I’m President We Won’t Let Exxon Make Record Profits

McCain said he’s not going to allow corporate giveaways, not that he was going to limit Exxon’s profits, or anyone else’s.

excellent point Bullwinkle. I didn’t watch the video at first. I’d think McCain made a good point, not?

  • http://www.valleydeals.com/cgi-bin/board2/YaBB.pl Kevin

Why does McCain want to hurt the poor teacher union pensions, which are heavily invested in energy companies?

  • pparets

We should have nominated a better candidate.

    Like who?

Thompson, who couldn’t get off his lazy ass long enough to campaign to win?

  • Mark

I didn’t hear the exact quote ” record profits” he talked about not giving tax breaks not a word was mentioned about profits other than they made a record profit.
Understand I don’t like McCain or Obama but this becomes a non-story for me when it’s misquoted and misused.

What people don’t realize is the oil companies profit margin is only 8-11%. That is not a lot. The government takes over 50 percent of their profits.

  • Jerry

ROB’S NOT VOTING… ARE YOU ROB?

  • ollie-B

Finally. A promise McCain knows he can’t keep. Seems you guys really have no respect for the intelligence of the electorate.

  • Hoth

I can’t believe that my only real choice on Tuesday is between this big stinking turd and a socialist. Of course I’ll be voting for the turd. *sigh*

  • george

shhh, Rob, please… just wait till the election’s over, then we can hang him out to dry ;-)

  • http://sonofasillyperson.blogspot.com/ sonofasillyperson

I’m with Bullwinkle – he said he’s not going to let it happen that corporate giveaways go to companies making record profits. The headline of this post is unfair and misleading.

  • brenarlo

This is why McCain will lose.

Let me put it this way… when McCain won’t “let” companies make money he’s no better than Obama.

McCain is an insider political hack.

  • http://boyddrivefollies.blogspot.com/ Good Ol Boy

Mr. Kissinger said it best: “It’s a shame they both can’t lose”

  • http://SayAnythingBlog.com The_Whistler_ofnd

Why vote for a sometime commie when you can vote for Obama and get the real thing?

  • Mickey

I guess I better sell my Exxon stock. Both candidates have a hard on for them.

    What happened to my America?

  • http://bullwinkleblog.com/ Bullwinkle

A correct headline would have said,

McCain Says He Will Stop Corporate Giveaways.

  • http://www.dartemis.net/blog/ sayanything-42

    Sigh.

  • former-Obama-Supporter

I am a GOPer and I was going to vote Obama because of McCain’s policy but with Obama’s “socialist” viewpoint-I can’t go there! I’m voting for McCain/Palin- because of Palin!

  • di butler

That’s as bad as all these pundits telling us that conservatism is dead. It is strange to me that when polled it shows that by a large majority this is still a center-right country. Have you not noticed that Obama when he drops in the polls always starts spouting conservative talking points? They are both wrong on this trying to play to the center crap. Stick with your base, the independents will fall for the most part fairly even.

  • tothestars2

Soon, the only business in America will be convienence and liquor stores.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/sparkiearbuckle sayanything-81

    Get your CLASS WAR on.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com robport

    I feel your pain, Hoth.

We should have nominated a better candidate.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/sparkiearbuckle sayanything-81

    Dude

Making profits doesn’t make Exxon bad. Making profits makes Exxon good.

Get with the class war meme. Palin’s got it down, why the holdout?
