McCain Was Right, Iran Has Supported Al Qaeda

The left has been going after McCain over asserting that Iran supports al Qaeda in Iraq.  Keith Olbermann, in fact, named McCain the “World’s Worst Person” last night because of it:

But as it turns out, McCain was right.  The fact that Iran has been providing assistance, limited as it may be, to al Qaeda in Iraq is something our military has known for over a year.

Iran is supporting both Sunni and Shiite terrorists in the Iraqi civil war, according to secret Iranian documents captured by Americans in Iraq.

The news that American forces had captured Iranians in Iraq was widely reported last month, but less well known is that the Iranians were carrying documents that offered Americans insight into Iranian activities in Iraq.

An American intelligence official said the new material, which has been authenticated within the intelligence community, confirms “that Iran is working closely with both the Shiite militias and Sunni Jihadist groups.” The source was careful to stress that the Iranian plans do not extend to cooperation with Baathist groups fighting the government in Baghdad, and said the documents rather show how the Quds Force — the arm of Iran’s revolutionary guard that supports Shiite Hezbollah, Sunni Hamas, and Shiite death squads — is working with individuals affiliated with Al Qaeda in Iraq and Ansar al-Sunna.

Another American official who has seen the summaries of the reporting affiliated with the arrests said it comprised a “smoking gun.” “We found plans for attacks, phone numbers affiliated with Sunni bad guys, a lot of things that filled in the blanks on what these guys are up to,” the official said.

McCain was right.  As much as Olbermann and the rest of the left may not want it to be true because its inconvenient for their politics, Iran has been providing support to al Qaeda in Iraq.  This means that the left has to admit both that we are actually fighting al Qaeda in Iraq (and thus Iraq is part of the war on terror) and that Iran is attacking our military in Iraq through surrogates.

It’s not pretty, but it’s the truth.

They can’t do that because they’re children more concerned with scoring cheap political points rather than dealing with reality.

“World’s Worst Person”? Good grief. Grow up.

I missed that Sun story...thanks for bringing it up. Of course I’d like to see more details and a named source is always nice but the idea that Iran’s Quds is working with Sunni jihadists doesn’t leave me feeling very warm or fuzzy.

Mighty Miracle McCain, even when he’s wrong, he’s right.

Anyone with a brain knows that, no matter how they may fight among themselves, the radical Islamists all see the US and Israel as enemies.  They are dedicated to our destruction.  To believe otherwise is pure foolishness.

Shocking as it sounds, I agree with r108. What we do with this knowledge I’m not sure but there is no doubt in my mind that radical Islamists hate Israel and America.

Back to the Sun’s story for a moment, I happened to catch a CNN interview with General Petraeus and was surprised to see him correct the reporter when she made the same slip as McCain. This puts me in the uncomfortable position of not wanting to argue against the General’s position while at the same time not wanting to dispute the Sun’s interview with intelligence personnel. Maybe the support for the Sunnis from Iran isn’t very significant? I don’t know but that would seem the only explanation that doesn’t jeapardise the veracity of both sides.

This nuance stuff is hard on a guy’s noggin.

I figure he always knew he was right.  I figure the real gaffe was mistakingly disclosing classified or sensitive material.

This wasn’t classified material, this was Mac and Leiberman channeling Abbot and Costello.
