McCain Suspends Campaign To Work On Financial Crisis, Obama Whines That He Was Blindsided

John McCain has stated that he’ll stop campaigning and return to Washington to help with the current financial meltdown. Obama, naturally, isn’t taking this too well:

Obama said his intent was focused on issuing a joint statement first.
But shortly after the call ended, Obama said, his rival appeared on television announcing the suspension and the subsequent debate no-show.
“I think the only possible miscommunication that might have been how quickly there was an announcement and someone was on television. I think my assumption was that the joint statement would go out initially,” Obama said.

Obama and his cronies on the left are already starting to whine that McCain is just jockeying for political advantage. The odious Harry Reid and the equally despicable Charles Schumer and Dick Durbin are calling it a “stunt”:

Congressional Democrats accused Sen. John McCain on Wednesday of potentially upsetting negotiations over a $700 billion bailout package by injecting presidential politics into the process, while Republicans welcomed his decision to return to Washington to participate in the talks.

I doubt that they’d have such negative opinions if their candidate who, by the way, is also a U.S. Senator – although one of much, much smaller stature than McCain, had made this move first? Instead of complaining they’d probaby be crowing about what a selfless and great leader he is.
So, did McCain just take the high ground on the leadership issue? Could be. Let’s see how loud the left squeals about this today, then we’ll know.
UPDATE:
Obama’s saying that even though McCain will be in Washington tomorrow, he’ll still go to Oxford, Mississippi and debate all by himself. That may seem like a selfish and ridiculous thing to do (which it is) but it’s also a tactical move on his part.
There are three debates scheduled. This is number one. If McCain isn’t there, then Obama can say, hey, we had a debate, you didn’t show up. Now there are just two left. Why would he do that instead of rescheduling?
Simple: McCain will show him for the empty suit/windbag/neophyte that he is during a real debate. That’s why Obama has ducked him so far, refusing “townhall” type debates. If he can minimize the damage by playing this card, he will.
Just win, baby.
UPDATE #2:
Obama now says that he intends to turn the debate into a one man town hall meeting if McCain doesn’t show, at least according to a piece up over at the Huffington Post.
A quick note to all those who accused McCain of political opportunism for going to Washington – check out this move by Obama. He refused townhall style debates with McCain but will take this opportunity to turn this into a one man political commercial. McCain will have to choose – let him do it, or go to Oxford and debate him.
Okay….now McCain is in a position where he HAS to go. Obama may have just made a crucial mistake.

If Senator McCain can’t make it don’t you think he should send Gov.Palin to stand in for him? Do you think they would go for that?

  • Independent thinker

“Don’t tase me Bro” it is so obvious that you are a techno-bully for McSame. The fact of the matter is that McCain can still go to congress to “come up with a solution” and still do a debate. Unless ofcourse his brain might “overfry” from all the mental activity. So call a spade a spade, he is POSTURING and running scared because he knows the debate will be on the economy and he doesn’t have a plan for that!

  • sayanything-2407

we have a leader, remember. ole mr brilliance.

More than one person can be a leader or take the lead if need be.

    Reid is majority LEADER
    Beohner is Minority LEADER

As I said, we have different leaders at different junctions, for different things, and as stated before, McCain was requested back by Paulson.

So keep with the empty rhetoric of McCain is too old, he is tired, he doens’t know anything, he doesn’t know economics, mcsame, ect ect ect

Old and Tired – and yet Obama had to have a vacation.

Doesn’t know anything – What has Obama done again?

He doesn’t know the economy – Again, what has Obama done? Where is HIS experience?

McSAME – blah blah blah – same stupid crap of trying to tie in McCain and Bush.

  • Bat One

Both Obama and McCain went to the same meeting today. Obama brought a Senate staffer, McCain brought a campaign staffer. You tell me who is politicizing this and who is interested in governing.

Obviously, Mr. Obama needed someone who knew everyone else in the room to introduce them to the junior Senator from Illinois.

  • carrick

McCain is now 3.5 points behind in the RCP average and 3 points behind with Rasmussen. This a dangerous landslide in public opinion was started of course by this economic crisis. His running back to Washington will be seen (fairly or otherwise) by many as political posturing, and in the process he is shooting himself in the foot by endangering his only real shot.

I think what we are dealing with is not a great politician but rather perhaps a mediocre one, and I think this latest flub may be the last nail in the coffin for him.

I think he underestimates among other things the importance of this debate for many undecided Americans… Yes this fiscal crisis is important, but that only magnifies the importance of the decision that we are going to be making in November.

I think both Obama and McCain need to be in touch with the congressional leaders and the President on this, since one of them will be residing over whatever bill gets passed, but the idea that McCain being in Washington is going to measurably affect the outcome (over his mere presence as Republican candidate) seems like quite a stretch to me.

  • sayanything-2407

Even Bill Clinton can see Liberals foaming at the mouth about this as incorrect – he also can see where the blame of this crisis lays:

Two days later, former President Clinton agreed:

CHRIS CUOMO, ABC NEWS: A little surprising for you to hear the Democrats saying, “This came out of nowhere, this is all about the Republicans. We had nothing to do with this.” Nancy Pelosi saying it. She signed the ’99 Gramm Bill. She knew what was going on with the SEC. They’re all sophisticated people. Is that playing politics in this situation?

BILL CLINTON: Well, maybe everybody does that a little bit. I think the responsibility the Democrats have may rest more in resisting any efforts by Republicans in the Congress or by me when I was President to put some standards and tighten up a little on Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

This was not a political stunt, he was called back to Washingston by Paulson to try and get Republicans to vote for this bailout otherwise it will fail.

On the other hand, this may be politically devistating to McCain since the majority of Americans seem to be saying HELL NO to the bail out.

My personal opinion is I would rather see my President or Senators or Congressman hauling thier butts back to Washington to work on this crisis – whether needed or not (and he was called back regardless for help), I would like to see ALL of our governemnt working to get this mess straight before it gets worse than it already is.

Obama may want to do some talking and get updates by phone, I could care less about the debate at this time, I would rather see all parties involved have thier collective arses doing what they are supposed to – thier jobs.

“Independent- Workin’ Patriot” said, For my family’s sake,my sake and our Nations sake,I’m voting for Sen.Obama.If your not brain dead you will too.

You have to be pretty brain dead to trust the federal government. Obama wants to vastly increase the size of the federal government, consolidate power at the federal level thereby taking away my state rights, and give control of my health care over to the untrustable behemoth that is the federal government.

You’re not an independent in any sense of the word. You’re a child who wants a mommy government.

  • Oswaldo

Now, he claims “it’s a stunt”.

Of course it’s a f**king stunt. McCain is just adding a new act to his vaudeville.
“Georgie, please help your fellow Republican. The lies aren’t working. My bullshit about the town hall debates was blown out of the water. How can I weasel myself out of those real debates?
Please back my political stunt by calling a meeting of candidates.”

Okay. I hereby pronounce a meeting of presidental candidates to get this this snivelling jerk off my belly.”

    “Thanks, Georgie, thanks.”

According to the other AP, the debate is back on:

WASHINGTON – Turmoil in America’s financial system threatened Thursday to upend the presidential campaign, with Barack Obama and John McCain preparing for crisis talks at the White House while at odds on going forward with their scheduled debate. Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour, whose state is hosting the debate, set for Friday, said planners were moving forward with the first televised match between the two candidates.

BTW, I’d like to thank all the Republicans posing as rabid, barking moonbats for telling us how scared of the debate McCain was going to be. By lowering everyone’s expectations, you’ll make his victory look even greater! -Karl Rove, er…Proof!

  • sayanything-2407

The election is just over a month away, just because McCain doesn’t want to stand forth and put his positions to the American people, doesn’t mean Obama should follow his lead.

I see comprehension is not a virtue among some.

AGAIN – McCain was REQUESTED back by Paulson to help shore up support for the bail out amongst Republicans. He didn’t just decide to go, he was requested back.

While Obama wants to talk, McCain is doing what he can to help, help that was requested.

Meanwhile, Obama states, if you need me – just give me a call.

    THis article is GARBAGE!!!!!!!!

If by “garbage”, you refer to Harry Reid’s contribution to the political discussion, you may be correct! Just two days ago, Harry said this:

“We need, now, the Republicans to start producing some votes for us. We need the Republican nominee for president to let us know where he stands and what we should do.

Now, he claims “it’s a stunt”. Maybe The Dimbulb from Searchlight could have put 8 exclamation points after it? Then it would have been believable!

  • Hans

Lets see now, Last week McCain said the economy was fundimentally sound, and now he’s saying we are in serious trouble and he needs to single handedly do something about it before everyone starts jumping out windows and slitting their wrists. WOW! Now that’s a flip-flop. You know what? McCain needs to simply, go away. Take no nothing Palin and just leave. He’s a bigger idiot than I thought and for those of you that want to get behind him, let me ask you a question. If he had said last week, Ladies and gentelemen citizens of the United States, never fear I heard that we are being attacked but let me assure you we are fundamentally sound and secure. And then the very next week he says, Ladies and gentelmen, citizens we are under attach ( I ThinK ) and you have 24 hours to prepare because we are going to be hit with a distructive forse. Now what in the hell would everyone do? Here comes Johnny come lately, waiving the white flag saying, run, run for livess, fight, fight, fight to stay alive, just as he did in he RNC speach. I couldn’t and wouldn’t put my trust in someone who’s completely out of touch like Johnny come lately McCain. No people not at all. He’s not right nor prepared to lead our country. He flip flopped. He saw an oppertunity to boost his numbers and he’s trying to capitalize on it.. nice word ah. No people he’s not ready. And besides he has no dog in the race where it comes to the bailout, he’s not even on the committee. What the hell is he talking about? Whats he going to do? After all he said it was fundamentally sound, didn’t he?

Obama’s views on national economic and finance matters are obviously uninformed, witless, and irrelevant, while his leadership in time of a national emergency in nowhere to be found.

    Seems pretty lackadaisical to me!

This was a sneaky, underhanded, and dirty political move akin to the great deciever Carl Rove’s tacticks, so until the republican party can be honest with the American People, I can never in good faith vote for them.

    Astroturf alert.

By the way, Dick….I’m an Independent, too, not a republican. I vote for whoever can do the best job. Obama and his chia pet VP pick ain’t it.

  • 2Hotel9

A point of fact, McC and Barri are, in fact, Senators, and their jobs currently require them to be in the Senate. You know, doing their job. I have complained for years about Senators running for President not doing the job they are being paid to do. If they all would just skip work we would be much better off.

  • Jack

McCain has been hiding behind Palin’s skirts since St. Paul and now he’s running scared.

    Two points:

    1. A president has to be able to do more than one thing at a time. McCain has admitted he cannot.

    2. McCain knows he’ll get stomped like a narc at Sturgis in the debate and is trying to forestall the inevitable.

  • Oswaldo

If Senator McCain has suspended his campaign and pulled his ads, why have I seen 5 of his adds on TV this morning during breakfast? Thursday 9/25/08- Pennsylvania

Because McCain is a lying low-life, employing conservative bullshit to try to attract votes.

    Republican campaign strategy:

“Use whatever works to get ahead. Lies have always worked for our party, so use as many lies as possible. No problem. Typical rightwing voters will believe anything.”

Yes Problem. Americans are getting tired of having their intelligence insulted. That last stunt takes the cake.
It will destroy McCain in the polls.

  • Mickey

McCain has no fear of Obama in any debate. I would love to see McCain show up to this debate and kick Barrys butt…again, just like the one a month ago.

You go McCain! “Country First”!! McCain and Nobama should both be in WA doing their job during this crisis! Wouldn’t that be a novel concept? Doing the job you were elected to do? You’ve had a 2 year paid vacation in the Senate Nobama! It’s time 2 GET TO WORK! I am very tired of the cruddy low-life “attacks” which are disguised as campaign information.. STOP IT AND GET TO WORK!! I would say “back to work” but in Nobama’s case, he hasn’t shown up for work… yet.

    Harv 7:35am

Uh… Harv… it’s congress. Have you ever witnessed the action on the senate floor? (Hint… there are no video/speaker phones.) Maybe you should go research how the government actually works.

  • Oswaldo

As I remember it…McCain kicked Obamas ass at the Saddleback debate

Yeah right. Good example. McBluff weaseled himself out of the Saddleback “cone of silence” and the debate was being moderated by a Republican pastor. McCain is trying to get credit for debating without debating. Just like the contrived town hall debate baloney, Saddleback is a worthless reference. McCain’s next trick will probably be to request that the presidential debates be moderated by Warren, or by a fair and balanced panel made up of Hannity, Limbaugh, Boortz, Coulter, Savage and O’Reilly presided over by Dick Morris.

    Gimme a break!

    .

  • brenarlo

What a dumb move by McCain. I’m a Ron Paul guy so you know I don’t like either of these candidates… but McCain wants to delay debates? During tough times we need to hear these guys MORE. Yeah Obama ducked events before… shame on him.

They’re both political hacks. Does anyone think that McCain will have anything to do with the bill that may or may not pass?

And why do campaigns have to be suspended? What will any of McCain’s or Obama’s campaign staff have to do with a bill that may or may not pass.

We should have 2 debates per week from now on… not this “i’m going to hide in DC” crap.

Personally, I’d rather have them not pass anything. They should be ramping up their campaigns!!

We deserve better than these to nuts.

  • Frustrated With Lies

Oh PLEASE…this is obviously yet another political trick by McSame’s crooked crew! Wake up America!

  • John Johnson

John McCain, who graduated second to last in his Naval Academy class, is the last guy who should be sticking his nose into the current economic crisis. He didn’t even major in Business Administration or Economics, so what does he think he would contribute? The idea that the Republican presidential candidate is going to unify the Congress and help generate a spirit of bipartisan support for the bail-out plan is ludricrous. What would his argument be? Do it for the sake of country? Does he really need to be in Washington for that? Ask yourself what McCain has to gain by skipping the upcoming debate and his grandstanding falls in tatters– This delay would push the VP debate between Biden and Palin further away, giving McCain’s horrifyingly inadequate running mate more time to cram world history and take photo ops with various heads of state. There is no good reason for either candidate to skip this debate. This is a crucial election for this country and the more educated the electorate is about the candidates the better. John McCain’s decision to skip the debate is as cynically political as his choice of Palin for VP.

  • Awe

John McCain is increasingly exposing his incompetencies. If as President he cannot multi-task then he needs to retire now and stop wasting our time. Go Debate on friday or get out of the race!!

  • Kathy Winters

I definately think that Obama and McCain should go to Washington and particiapte in dealing with the problems of the bail out it is their job at this point instead of skirting their responsibility to our country to side step it for a”more talk and no do” session. You can’t get a job done by leaving the shovel on the ground and talking about it with your hands in your pockets. the country would get a better idea of what they really are by how they deal with a REAL issue.

  • Gene

McThuselah is grasping at straws. He knows, and everyone who seriously follows current events knows that the commission has already been selected to resolve the economy issue. The only reasons he is going back to washington is to catch a breather, and take advantage to a few photo ops. A football analogy would be that McThuselah is trying to freeze the kicker to take away momentum. But I think the ancient warrior can forget it. When he made that brilliant statement, “THE FUNDAMENTALS OF THE ECONOMY IS STRONG,” he fell on his sword. LOL

  • Harv

McCain rushing back to DC to resolve the problems his party and the Bush Administration created is laughable. He looks like a doddering old fool. Hasn’t he heard of telephones and video conferencing?

Perhaps the real reason is to postpone the debate until next week and subsequently avoid Sarah debating Biden?

  • Hans

Nonsense, Last week the economy was fundamentally sound and today we’re headed for a depression? It’s time for the republicans to just go away. Yep, it’s time. Bush take McCain with you and just go. Here Bush just spent 10 Billion a month in Iraq on a war we should have never waged, and now he gets on national T.V. with McCain and says, Hey everybody, your going to hit rock bottom if you don’t help me get you out of this mess I put you in.

Sure, and you call your selves republican? So did I until most recently, until I wokeup. Come on America now is the time to wake up. Are we going to elect someone who has stood side by side with the man that spent our tax payer dollars @ 10 Billion dollars a pop back into the White House. Barack is right, ENOUGH! Lets get these jerks out of the White House. Look what they’ve brought down on us yet again another devastation, First 9/11 they ignored the warnings, now wall street, we’re getting kicked out of not only our homes but now our jobs? Time to go Republicans, Vote for who you think will lead us out of what we were forsed into. Vote smart, Vote Barack Obama. At least his choice for VP knows what how to look at Russia other than outside on the back porch. What was that she said? His world view? what an idiot. And you trust McCains judgement that the economy is fundamentally sound? And now he wants to stop everything to fix it before it’s too late, ah excuse me but, If that were true, he’s a week late. No wonder we were attached on 9/11 they ignored the warnings and now what?

  • EK

I understand the financial crisis needs to be dealt with but how do you suspend your presidential run. Just say, I am going to Washington to work on this matter with the president and congress and my running mate Gov. Palin will still continue to travel per my scheduled speaking engagements as I attend to duties in Washington. BUT I guess McCain doesnt trust his running mate or she was selected as a pansy to pull in the conservative vote and only that. He doesnt trust her to travel alone I see. Both of they are stuck to the hip so that he keeps her close and he likes that because she pulls in more crowds than he does. Go figure. I think with private gets nowadays, McCain can be in Washington, fly out to Mississippi and be back in Washington again late Friday or Saturday morning to discuss whatever is going on in Congress. I think this is a wag the dog type of situation. He is being beat on the economy so McCain is taking his normal maverick stance.
The debate should be on. Its too late in the game to not have the American people hear what the candidates have to say. Most states will be voting soon if this debate is postpones.

  • Nicole

I think McCain should send Palin to debate Obama on Friday. Do you think that would benefit McCain or Obama? The main stream media has such low expectations of Pailin that it would be almost impossible for her to underperform. Then McCain could debate Biden in October. Any thoughts?

  • Tony

Wait, an original member of the keating (spelling, sry it’s early) 5 is worried about the American economy? Give it a rest. This is just a typical McCain trick. He’s just trying to avoid an embarrassing debate performance.

  • Aussie Okie

You have to be joking this is just a ploy to avoid getting his ass kicked and now he wants the Palin interview postponed too. He voted for this (de-regulation) in the senate and now he is scared of the questions. Palin is a drip, both interviews I have seen (ABC and CBS) she has been just a parrot. She even said she would have to go find answers and bring them back. McCain is a turd and tried a dirty trick to politicize this crisis. The Bush admin is again using scare tatics “you need to act now” don’t ask questions just hand over the money. Sounds like Iraq and weapons on mass destruction. There is no point in them going to Washington this is not how the senate works, McCain cannot just butt in and solve anything. He is losing in the polls and wants to be the “white knight’ and save us all, what a joke.

  • Pilgrim

    “proof”

So, for a Senator to go back to work to do the country’s business is “a sneaky, underhanded, and dirty political move”? No wonder Obama has spent so little time working as a Senator for the last three years!

I didn’t not know my comments would need such clearification but after reading the other comments you have lifted from fox news’s talking points, oh sorry, I mean posted of your own accord, I realize that this needs to be explained to you. (yes I am applying a bit of abbusive ad hominem)So here let me brake it down for you, the dirty , underhanded part is where you get off the phone with your opponent who has reached out to you in hopes to move the congress foward with a joint-statement , and as soon as the converstions over you get your people to figure out how to spin Obama’s show of leadership on a matter in to one of your own, this is nothing more than a play out of Carl Rove’s playbook (Rove actually came out and said McCain has been playing too dirty).
Of coarse “Proof of ignorance” you will never realize any of this until the republican party stops paying you to blog all day and you have to get a real job.
and finaly that little blurb you have at the bottom of every statement does not matter to those of us that dare to think for ourselves, we know that Iraq is a war that only happened to make the adminisration rich, I mean why didn’t we attack the country the hijackers were born in, the country that trained them to hate and kill Americans, Bush was too busy have Bandibar and other Saudi Royals over for dinner at the White House , Affganistan is a noble war and Invading Saudi Arabia would be, but Iraq is a Lie that has caused too many of our noble troops to die.

  • robert108

He got beat because he sux in improvised speech. There are literally dozens of examples of Uh-bama that demonstrate just that.

He also has the wrong ideas and values for this country.

  • David R

The only possible reason why McBush might be needed in Washington DC is to convince some of his fellow Nero-Conservatives (they like to fiddle around while the U.S. economy is burning – a fire they helped to start – under the guise of free-market, laissez-faire economic “principles”) to work to solve this economic crisis and support the associated legislation.

McBush needs to get back to the campaign and debate to finally discuss the issues. Let the congress do its work. (He hasn’t been involved for more than 166 days, anyway).
Now is not the time to grand-stand and jump in at the last minute to claim all of the credit for none of the work.

By the way, congress has reached an agreement and they managed to do it without McBush.

McBush-To-The-Rescue will now have to wait for another disaster to take advantage of. I predict that that will be McBarbie’s debate performance. Hard to imagine how McBush will be able to take advantage of that, though.

  • Tupac

I thought the fundamentals of the economy were strong? I guess the Republicans and McCain were wrong.

During time of crisis life goes on; the debate must go on.

It is time for Palin to take over the campaign if McCain is needed at home in Washington.

Even lipstick wearing hockey moms multitask shouldn’t our next President?

  • Schredder

I can’t understand why everybody is so upset about McCain not debating. This economy thing is a big deal and he needs to be focussed.

Great leadership is whining like a bitch?

    Great leaders get ‘blindsided?

Here’s Obama’s chance to show great leadership and that judgement Hannitized lied about.

    Where the Hell is it?

I don’t think Hannitized’s definition of ‘good judgement’ and ‘great leadership’ matches any honest person’s.

  • Pam

I commend John McCain going back to Washington to work on this financial situation. Too bad Barack Obama is more concerned with his own agenda then the American people. I hadn’t made up my mind who to vote for, but it sure appears that John McCain is more concerned with my future than Barack Obama.

  • Peg

Give me a break! Will you please? All Senators and Congressmen/women do more than just one thing each day. Sure, this is a crisis, and it deserves attention, but McCain IS pulling a “stunt” here by trying to fool people into thinking he is being a real “leader” by “cutting and running.” Just proves to me he’s a wild canon….ready to go off at any moment. Want that sort of commander in chief??? THANKS BUT NO THANKS, MY FRIENDS!

He needs to be in Mississippi for the 90 minute debate….then HE CAN run back to Washington to wring his hands and try to act like a leader. He’s part of the problem, been there for 20 plus years….did some good things, then, got “bought” by the conservatives and completely changed altered his principles. NO WAY, NO MCCAIN!

This move by McCain is obviously political. What else could he hope to achieve by calling off the debate and running back to Washington during the nations most critical economic dilemma since the great depression; when he self admittedly knows nothing about economics?

It’s just one more attempt by McCain to fool Americans that are simple enough to fall for it. America can’t sustain another president that has no reservations about deceiving his own country for personal gain.

CHRIS DODD (D-CT), SENATE BANKING COMMITTEE CHMN: American taxpayers are angry and they demand to know how we arrived at this moment.

ELIZABETH DOLE (R), NORTH CAROLINA SENATOR: My constituents, and indeed taxpayers across the nation are asking how we arrived at this crisis. It is infuriating.

ANGLE: But Senator Dole and others think they know the answer, and it’s something the Senate tried to fix three years ago but was thwarted.

DOLE: To the mismanagement of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, which was made possible by weak oversight and little accountability.

MEL MARTINEZ (R), FLORIDA SENATOR: A lot of what we’re dealing with today has its origins in Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.

ANGLE: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, backed by the federal government, buy mortgage loans from the lenders who make them. But four years ago, both were in trouble over shoddy accounting. Fannie Mae Chief Franklin Raines, President Clinton’s former budget director, was fired. To placate those in Congress who watched over them, Fannie and Freddie promised to do more to help poor people get mortgages. That led them to buy riskier and riskier home loans from private lenders creating incentives for everyone to make shakier loans.

PETER WALLISON, AMERICAN ENTERPRISE INSTITUTE: The problem is that they encouraged very bad mortgages to be made by banks and other institutions, because Fannie and Freddie would buy them.

ANGLE: Eventually, they bought trillions of dollars worth of mortgages, a substantial portion of them based on poor credit, then resold many of them to financial institutions who thought they were safe because the federal government was behind them.

WALLISON: As a result of this appearance that they were backed by the government, people never paid very much attention to the assets they were acquiring or the risks they were taking.

ANGLE: And so shaky mortgages spread throughout the system. But in 2005, the Senate Banking Committee, then chaired by Republican Richard Shelby, tried to rein in the two organizations bypassing some strong new regulations.

WALLISON: Which would have prevented Fannie and Freddie from acquiring this bad — these bad mortgages. It actually gave a new regulator for Fannie and Freddie the kinds of powers that a bank regulator had.

ANGLE: All the Republicans voted for it. All the Democrats, including the current chairman, Senator Chris Dodd, voted against it, and that was after Fed Chairman Alan Greenspan had issued a stark warning to senators that Fannie and Freddie were playing with fire. Greenspan said without stronger regulations, “We increase the possibility of insolvency and crisis. Without restrictions on the size of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, we put at risk our ability to preserve safe and sound financial markets in the United States.”

ANGLE: Which turned out to be exactly right, but because Democrats blocked it, those new regulations never got consideration by the full Senate and died. So that’s how we got into this mess, and how we missed a chance to avoid it. Getting out of it now, of course, will be a lot more difficult.

  • sayanything-2407

I think alot of our ‘new’ liberal posters need to do some reading.

First, It wasn’t the President that called him back, he was requested back for another reason.

BOB SCHIEFFER: I am told, Maggie, that the way McCain got involved in this in the first place, the Treasury Secretary was briefing Republicans in the House yesterday, the Republican conference, asked how many were ready to support the bailout plan. Only four of them held up their hands. Paulson then called, according to my sources, Senator Lindsey Graham, who is very close to John McCain, and told him: you’ve got to get the people in the McCain campaign, you’ve got to convince John McCain to give these Republicans some political cover. If you don’t do that, this whole bailout plan is going to fail. So that’s how, McCain, apparently, became involved.

    Continued Schieffer . . .

SCHIEFFER: He has gotten what he wants, he’s going to have this meeting, kind of a summit today with the president and Barack Obama. I’m told that the leaders of both parties are getting close to having some kind of a bill. The question, though, is whether rank-and-file Republicans, especially, are going to vote for this.

It sounds like McCain’s concerns about the bailout were addressed and here we go.

That’s one way to put it. Another way would be to say that, by all accounts, no meaningful progress was made since McCain suspended his campaign. To avoid potentially hurting his campaign by not showing up at the debate, McCain flip flopped on attending the debate and decided that after a few phone calls this morning, the bailout is suddenly in good hands.

For this whole “suspend campaign” stunt to be effective, McCain should have stayed in Washington instead of attending the debate. Then he could have continued with his “country first” theme and say that he — and not Obama — is the only one in Washington during this economic crisis. Now the whole thing is truly revealed as a stunt/gimmick.

Obama appears to genuinely not grasp the stakes here. He is not acting like a leader who understands the risks the country faces. And this is not surprising giving his experience gap when it comes to money, work, and savings much less finance.

Has the country forgot about the telephone? Or the internet? I haven’t seen mentioned the fact that part of Obama’s response was that he’s been in daily contact with congressional leaders, discussing this problem and exerting what influence he can. Senator Dodd (who’s CHAIRING the bipartisan committee working on the resolution) said yesterday was the first time he’d even HEARD from McCain… but said he’s talked with Obama many times over the last ten days. The same was heard from other committee members and some in congress. Also, people questioned what McCain would do once he got there. ??? He isn’t on the committee, so wouldn’t be allowed in the meeting. He doesn’t really have a lot of close allies in congress (barring those who are now supporting him because he’s the presumptive GOP nominee)… so who would he lobby to pass/reject/amend this proposal? All he could really do is submit his vote on the final resolution. Does that really require suspending your campaign?!

Those working on the proposal say it’s almost done… and they’d really rather McCain NOT show up, since they didn’t want to inject any more politics into the process and there’s not much he could really do. Even more importantly, the work is almost done. It’s like having your friend show up to help you move just as you’re finishing loading the last box and getting ready to crack some beer and eat pizza….then hearing him go on about what a great help he was.

PluhEZE. Give the American people a little more credit for intelligence (although, looking at some of the comments above, maybe not everyone’s worthy of that credit).

I’m an independent voter who tries to look for common sense in the solutions I hear from the candidates. All I see from McCain is rhetoric and political gimmicks aimed at getting him elected – like suspending his campaign and “running to Washington to save the day” instead of just picking up the phone… or a 38 cent temporary gas tax break… or picking a perceived outsider with strong fringe religious tenets to bring over the Hillary-ites and motivate the Religious Right. She may help to get him elected, but what does she add to the leadership team once they’d get elected??? – not much. At least Obama was humble enough to pick someone who would balance his weaknesses and create a more robust leadership team once elected.

This news story strikes me as McCain trying to one-up Obama by acting like this was all his idea and that suspending his campaign is noble… When in truth, it was Obama that started the ball rolling and McCain just looked for ways to use it to turn around his sinking campaign. Plus, what was he going to DO there that he couldn’t do over the phone? Even if he needed to go, what’s stopping him from taking a quick plane to DC… or the debate? I guess it’s just that all those techno gizmos like email, telephone and jet air travel are just a little scary for someone who’s so disconnected from today’s technology.

Obama’s right, a president should be able to use a telephone and multitask, as HE HAS BEEN DOING… and in doing so, seeming much more presidential – calmly working through the issues, using experts to help guide his decisions… not his “gut feelings” (rational or otherwise)… and most importantly, not knee-jerking to every issue he thinks will get people to elect him. Complicated solutions require time and thought… not spazzoid reactions aimed at getting elected.

McCain’s just “lucky” Bush called for a meeting today. Otherwise, what would he have done? Gimmick, Gimmick, Gimmick. It seems completely obvious to me and every educated, rational person I know.

My two cents. Okay, more like two dollars. This whole “playing the people like a fiddle” has me pulling my hair out lately. The further behind McCain gets, the more inane his substance.

Obama is unbelievable. He is making it seem like McCain wants to cancel the debate because he is scared to debate in fear that he will get creamed over economic issues. I am pretty sure that McCain was the one who wanted to have 10 town hall meetings which Barack declined. Maybe Barack doesn’t want to have to go back to Washington and possibly have to vote on something really serious. Since the cat is out of the bag with his whole “present” voting record and from here on out he actually has to place a vote, I think he is scared he might vote in a way that might hurt his campaign. He would much rather just sit there and read one of his empty motivational speeches off of a teleprompter than actually have to go and make real decisions like he is supposed to as a senator.

  • Paulette

There is no middle ground in here because that’s not the purpose of this blog but from my perspective McCain has lost it! That’s his mind that I’m referring to and here’re my reasons for his irrational behavior. He is playing from the Abramoff/Rove playbook but is an old man who has lost that which is familiar to who he was. Abramoff is in jail and Rove should be real soon after this election regardless of his schizophrenic redemptive language in this election cycle. Abramoff was an intimidator and enforcer in the CR (Campus Republicans) regime and had serious fund raising resources from individual patrons and big business to ooze into cracks in government and get a groundswell of young revolutionaries in place. This was compliments of Ronald Reagan, the Godfather. These thugs have ruined a system of checks and balances and should be viewed as Republican Contras. Throw a little Ralph Reed into the mix and the state religion becomes Evangelism. McCain carries the flag for their deceptive and evil agenda. He’s been sucked into their philosophy because of his desire to absolve himself of denouncing America and her policies during the war. He believes that this can only be done by becoming President. Palin clears the path for him as a pretty piece, arm candy and deflects attention from his ineptness. She wings it because men and women are caught up with her willingness to clear the path and nothing more. She lacks educational preparation and background for a 21st century VP/President and certainly lacks any foreign policy experience that those in the office really need. The Republican initiated photo op with leaders at the UN should be an insult to Americans when thinking about foreign policy interaction and experience. This is another way to bamboozle Americans! Analysis is not her strong suit as we have seen in the brief scripted interviews and her husband certainly won’t be able to give her assistance with national issues and Congress here. Although I must say that she has used him as an enforcer in Alaska pretty well. What do we have Americans at this time in our history, A MESS! Reading and analyzing resources that give a historical perspective is my only recourse in taking my citizenship seriously. It’s there as plain as day if we want to do the work and gain real knowledge about people, policy, voting records and Washington influence. Sometimes our babble is only from one lens which is obstructed from reality because we feel comfortable within OUR own tribe. It has nothing to do with reason or logic but more based on our emotions. I’m trying to move from fewer emotional decisions as a responsible American citizen.

Why on earth would anyone who finds lying by political candidates so objectionable support Barack Obama and Joe Biden?

  • HG

I’m trying to move from fewer emotional decisions as a responsible American citizen.

Success has once again escaped you. Your analysis is wrought with partisan, emotional hype and a noticeable absence of logic. Chalk it up to a leftist state of mind.

McCain and Obama are both US Senators; they need to do their jobs in this time of “crisis”, right?
The real question here is: Why isn’t Obama doing the job we’re paying him to do? We’re not paying him to campaign, we’re paying him to be a Senator. If he doesn’t think this is an important issue, that should tell us something.

  • HG

Have you noticed how the resident libs parrot democrat talking points almost on cue? McCain is “pulling a stunt” or throwing a “hail mary”.

  • sayanything-2407

David R is only partly correct:

The only possible reason why McBush might be needed in Washington DC is to convince some of his fellow Nero-Conservatives (they like to fiddle around while the U.S. economy is burning – a fire they helped to start – under the guise of free-market, laissez-faire economic “principles”) to work to solve this economic crisis and support the associated legislation.

As I stated before, McCain was asked back by Paulson to help bring together Republican support for this bail out. Stupid nicknames david is using aside, he is completely incorrect about how this came about, which again was even explained by Bill Clinton that DEMOCRATS refused to put regulations and rules in place that would have stopped htis.

So if the old and out of touch McCain can get one over on Barry, this is absolutely pathetic.

What will be his excuse when he goes Nevil Chamberlin on Iran and the next day they launch nukes at Israel?

mccain realizes he cannot debate against Obama so he thinks of some way to get out it. mccain admitted that economy is not his strong points and said about 3 DAYS AGO that “the fundamentals of our economy are strong”, what the hell!!!

why is he going to washington, to vote? B.S.! he’s trying to get attention, say something meaningless, and his supporters will say “wow mccain’s putting counrty first”. BS again. mccain is putting politics first. mccain wants to postpone the debates, why not postpone the election!

AMERICA is tired of this BS!

the debates should go on, so the world will see how ridiculous mccain really is. by the way, is there even going to be a bailout meeting at 9pm friday? I DOUBT THAT VERY MUCH!

Meanwhile, Obama states, if you need me – just give me a call.

Obama’s views on national economic and finance matters are obviously uninformed, witless, and irrelevant, while his leadership in time of a national emergency in nowhere to be found. Call him? Whatever for???

I am surprised at how tough the republicans make themselves out to be, especially when they’re on television and at conventions with no one to dispute their claims, and when a crisis hits they are always touting their rhetoric about “country first” and “9/11.” But they always seem to disparage the other side while trying to appear patriotic and statesman-like. What happened to honest debating during tough times? Isn’t that what we are suppose to do? I would respect Senator McCain more if he would show himself the maverick he claims to be and allow his running mate to show herself the pitbull she claims to be. So far their claims are baseless. And those trying to defend them offer nothing more than the same rhetoric. Where are the intellectual conservatives and republicans with some mental fortitude?

I’d like to personally invite all of you brave liberals with your predictions of how badly McCain will do in the debate to come back here and gloat after the debate…if you can!

Don’t make me come find you! Heh.

  • carrick

    Oswaldo:

Yeah right. Good example. McBluff weaseled himself out of the Saddleback “cone of silence” and the debate was being moderated by a Republican pastor.

Nothing like a sore loser to make up stories how they got their ass beat.

He got beat because he sux in improvised speech. There are literally dozens of examples of Uh-bama that demonstrate just that.

    Heh.
McCain is nailing his own coffin. The bailout is a joke.

No one’s whining about gas prices all of the sudden.

Obama is a joke too, but bailing out on the debate is foolish. Pulling your ads… ? Bizarre. Why, pray tell, would he ‘suspend his campaign’? It reeks of maneuvering.

  • http://sayanythingblog.com/readers/author/sparkiearbuckle sayanything-81

leadership in time of need doesn’t seem to be one of them!

we have a leader, remember. ole mr brilliance.

McCain is suspending his national campaign.

    For a day, to grandstand.

Which consists of his personal efforts to get himself elected. He is doing this to focus on the economic problems this country is facing.

Why didn’t he say anything about the economy during the debate besides superficial slander.

The state campaigns can carry on without his guidance or input. Thus, it doesn’t matter if the state campaigns stop or not. McCain has stopped, and his following through on his project.

His project? I think you slipped up at the end. Its all of our project, no?

Not that logic is going to work with Lestat, but that’s what is going on.
