McCain Shoots Himself In The Foot

You’re John McCain.

You won a hard-fought primary battle with a number of other well-qualified Republicans and are now recipient of support (albeit grudging in some instances) support of Republicans nationwide.  What’s more, a lot of the ill-will rank-and-file conservatives have felt about you in the past has been overshadowed when they closed rank to defend you against unfair attacks about your home life, age, health and citizenship from liberal media outlets like the New York Times.  Now all you have to do is hold the party together and mind your p’s and q’s long enough to finish off what’s left of who ever emerges from the Clinton/Obama steel cage match.

So what do you do?  Why, you schedule an appearance at the national conference of a pro-illegal immigration Hispanic nationalist group to remind everyone in your conservative base that you’re not quite as conservative on this hot-button issue as they would like.

Makes perfect sense, no?

What an imbecile.

Both McCain and Boob.

Reagan wooed Latinos.  So did Dole, Bush senior and President Bush.  McCain will do likewise.

...unless we consider losing the 20% - 22% of Latinos who vote republican acceptable, or look forward to possiby losing New Mexico, Arizona and Texas in November.

Candidates of every persuasion routinely speak at NAACP, La Raza, AFL-CIO, VFW, and other similar groups. Doesn’t mean they have sold out.

Winning the presidency means winning voters and blocs of voters.

"La Raza” = The Race.

To claim to be against racism, and then to talk to those racist chumps, is selling out.

No excuse for this; the “wooing” in the past has produced the present wholesale invasion problem; it’s time for a change.  If McCain had any smarts at all, he would ride the anti-invasion issue right to the White House; we already know the huge majority of Americans who want the invasion stopped, but to McCain, pandering to the left and sticking his finger in the eye of conservatives is more important.  Hubris.

Could be, r108. But the reality is that there are millions of hispanic votes in key swing states.

pparets, of course, has it all wrong. The NCLR doesn’t represent all Hispanics, just those on the far-left or at least those who support illegal activity out of racial solidarity. The vast majority of those would never vote GOP, so he has little to gain and a lot to lose.

If anyone wants to actually do something about this, go to one of McCain’s appearances, tell him that the NCLR gave an award to the guy who said the following, and then ask him to renounce the group. Then, upload his response to video sharing sites. Here’s the quote:

“We have got to eliminate the gringo, and what I mean by that is if the worst comes to the worst, we have got to kill him.”

The NCLR gave an award to the guy who said that; details at my name’s link. If you want to do something about this you have to take it to McCain directly by asking him about this at one of his events and then uploading his response.

Sorry, Details here: I never claimed that La Raza speaks for all hispanics, any more than CPAC speaks for all conservatives.

It would be great to have a link to that quote. Can you provide one?

Hah!  Mere guesswork Details and roguish interpretation...I’m sure McCain’s Campaign Staff knows much more about the demographics, his base, and the statistics than you.  Sorry, but I will take credible experienced professionals over your thoughts on the effects of this political move.  This move is big.

Either way, I’m glad McCain is NOT selling out, seeing as this is his stance the whole time.

Could be, r108.[/quote

No “could be” about it; during the McCain Amnesty Bill debacle in ‘06, over 70% of polled Americans were against it, including legal Hispanic immigrants and Hispanic US Citizens.  IMO, not supporting strong anti-invasion action was the reason the Republicans lost the ‘06 Congressional elections.  The issue was there for the taking, as the Dems will never go against the invaders, but the Republicans dropped the ball, just like McCain is now.  Shameful.
Securing US borders shouldn’t be a political issue.

robert108 on May 5, 2008 at 03:51 pm

r108:  Which is probably why McCain has been saying - as late as today - that securing the border will be his first priority, to be certified by the border state governors.

Yeah, I meant ‘could be’.

Exactly, pparets.  Politics is about ADDITION, not subtraction.  It’s the most fundamental rule of politics there is.

So, you just made that up because it sounded good to you?  That’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard.
I suppose they’d all leave if everyone talked about it just like Malkin and VDARE do, right?
Yeah, speaking to identity groups caused all the illegal immigration.  Right.  (But only with Hispanic identity groups!)

Beth on May 5, 2008 at 04:03 pm

How is subtracting people who object to open borders considered addition?  Let’s face it the only reason why he’d go to that specific group is to reassure them he’s not one bit serious about border security and 100% for amnesty as soon as he can get it pushed through.

I’ve seen polls that say many Hispanics don’t like illegal immigration to.  They probably don’t like being pandered to as well.

So, you just made that up because it sounded good to you? That’s the most absurd thing I’ve ever heard.

Actually, it’s factually correct.  The last President who acted strongly against invasion was “Operation Wetback” during the Eisenhower administration, which was spectacularly successful.  All the “wooing” since has led to a massive invader population in the US.  The “wooing” being permissive border “enforcement” and policies that wink at the invaders coming into our country.  Your denial of this obvious truth is absurd, Beth.

You’re not getting it; the “swing” voters(some of whom are either natural-born hispanic US citizens or naturalized legal US citizens) don’t like the invaders either, and the candidate who “seizes the day” on preventing further invasion will pull them, a much greater number(including conservative and moderate Dems) who don’t like the invasion either.
Once again, be reminded of the massive response to McCain’s amnesty bill.  It was bipartisan.

If you don’t know by now, don’t mess with it.

robert108 on May 5, 2008 at 05:21 pm

I’m pretty sure there are ways to appeal to Hispanic without assuming that all Hispanics are illegal aliens and not to pander to the illegals.

On the other way there isn’t much of a way that’s better to alienate a large chunk of the Republican base than doing just that.

robert108:  Oh, I get it. And you’re the one who doesn’t.

Hispanics now constitute the largest minority in the nation, and like all voting blocs, they have various points of view on immigration [despite your claims otherwise], abortion, the economy and a whole range of issues.

Unlike African-Americans, the hispanic vote is much more fluid and “up for grabs”.  In several key swing states, it is the Latino vote which may determine who gets the electoral votes. Any candidate who seriously wants to win must make it a point to woo the hispanic vote.

You seem not to have noticed that Senator McCain throughout this campaign has steadfastly pledged that border security will be his first priority, or you assume that he is being deceitful.

You also assume that McCain’s attention to Latinos is somehow a violation of conservative principles and an indication of his rino inclinations.

I don’t believe that is true, but even if it were, McCain would still be preferable to either of the socialists running on the democratic side.

You mean like the same kind who pushed Obama into the national spotlight without learning about (or ignoring) Rezko, Wright, Marshall, or Akers. Or, the same professionals who see which way the political winds blow by divining those oh-so-reliable political surveys. McCain’s counting on the conservatives being so repulsed by Clinton and Obama that they’ll come out and vote for him just for spite of those two.

That is what he has said, McCain has given Conservative nothing to believe that he is going to do a good job with Immigration. IF John is able to win election I can see abandoning the very conservatives that he is wooing.

Well, Goon, I have two suggestions:

First, why don’t we all wait and see what it is that McCain says to La Raza.

Second, As annoying as McCain can be to conservatives, I don’t think he has ever lied or been deceptive, unlike Obama or Clinton. His history has been a ‘maverick’ who says what he means and means what he says. So, if he says he was wrong and will now make border security his first priority, I am inclined to give him the benefit of the doubt.

Fair enough, somehow I doubt he’s going to tell them they’re wrong.

You seem not to have noticed that Senator McCain throughout this campaign has steadfastly pledged that border security will be his first priority,

I know he said it, not often, and not throughout this campaign.  Saying that I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt that you meant his first priority in the illegal alien/open border arena, not his #1 priority of his planned administration.

Wrong again; it’s his pandering to the invaders by addressing “La Raza” and having an open-borders advocate on his staff.  You always get it wrong when you try to tell me what I’m thinking or “assuming”.  You might pay attention to that little fact.

No. There is nothing McCain could say other than “go home” that would make this ok. La Raza is a violent seperatist group that seeks to undermine our security. The only reason this doesn’t automatically disqualify McCain from the Presidency...is who he’s running against.
