McCain Gets Off What May Be Best Line Of Tonight’s GOP Debate

I’m only kinda/sorta watching the GOP debates because I find the pretentious questions and the endless posturing (even from the candidates I like) a little tiresome, uut McCain got off a gem that just couldn’t be ignored.

On why he didn’t attend Woodstock:

I was tied up at the time.

I think it took the audience a moment to get the joke, but eventually they gave McCain a standing ovation.

That’s the thing about John McCain.  I think he’d make a terrible President, and as a Senator he’s frustrating because he always seems to have his finger in the wind when it comes to policy and he cherishes that “maverick” title a little too much, but the guy’s a bona fide American hero.

Nobody should ever forget that.

I’m sorry, but JOHN MCCAIN IS NOT A HERO!

For God’s sake.  I am sick of hearing this!  John McCain was a Prisoner of War during Vietnam.  That makes him “unfortunate”, it does NOT make him a hero.

Real war heroes actually do something heroic.  They risk their lives to save their platoon against all odds.  They throw themselves on a grenade.  They command the troops at D-Day.  They single-handedly take out a machine-gun nest and save hundreds of men.

Names like Eisenhower, Sergeant York, Audie Murphy, John Paul Jones, George Washington, the men and women who lost their lives saving others on 9/11 - these are heroes.

No, John McCain is no hero.

Bill, McCain served his country honorably.

That makes him a hero.

Bill: Are you terminally stupid? I answered this question on another post and provided a link to his acts of heroism. You don’t have to like his politics...I don’t! But don’t diminish his service to our country.

The first time you said this, I thought you were merely ignorant. This post proves you are not ignorant, but an evil SOB who wants to tear McCain down, probably for partisan reasons. Grow up!
Right now, you just sound like a whiny-ass mama’s boy who isn’t bright enough to read or reason in English and too lazy to click on a link.
Give it up! Your attempts at character assassination reflect poorly on you, not John McCain!

If your ADD prevents you from remembering what I wrote, Google John McCain and read the wikipedia account. (If you need to move your lips when you read, go right ahead!)

Bill Mitchell,

Any man who suffers through 7 years of captivity and torture for his country, as did John McCain, who was singled out for “special treatment” because of his family history and his father’s position as CINCPAC, is as genuine a hero as has ever worn the military uniform of the US.  Period.

Any man who too dense to recognize that fact is a pluperfect fucking moron!

During his military career, he received a Silver Star, a Bronze Star, the Legion of Merit, the Purple Heart, and a Distinguished Flying Cross.[20]

Like his politics or not (I don’t) I do respect his service.

What’s going to happen to US industry when the global warming extremists like John McCain double the price of electricity?  I would think all these factories will close and set up in countries where they aren’t scared of technology.

All right, Bill! Put up or shut up time! Please list your decorations for a side by side comparison.  Please do not dawdle! I’m tempted to send a six year old girl over there to kick your ass!

Some older SA readers might remember a Saturday Night Live skit about Ross Perot’s running mate Adm. Stockdale.  Stockdale had performed miserably in the debates often appearing confused by the questions as them to be repeated.

SNL made fun of it ... I laughed at it ... until I heard Dennis Miller talk about it.

“Now I know (Stockdale’s name has) become a buzzword in this culture for doddering old man, but let’s look at the record, folks. The guy was the first guy in and the last guy out of Vietnam, a war that many Americans, including our present President, did not want to dirty their hands with. The reason he had to turn his hearing aid on at that debate is because those fucking animals knocked his eardrums out when he wouldn’t spill his guts. He teaches philosophy at Stanford University, he’s a brilliant, sensitive, courageous man. And yet he committed the one unpardonable sin in our culture: he was bad on television.”

Adm. Stockdale was a POW in Vietnam.  The VC asked him questions, and when he didn’t answer, they stuck sharpened bamboo poles in his ears.

And we laughed when he didn’t hear questions!!!!!

Anyone who has endured the horrors of a Vietnam POW camp is a hero by ANY definition.

The second day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more.

And a man who is offered a ticket out and REFUSES because some of the men had been in longer is a bigger hero!

Let’s add that to a reporter’s making fun of Bob Dole’s war injury.

Some years ago I had the honor of a conversation with a Viet Nam Veteran and former prisoner of war. The torture that this man went through for seven long years was gut wrenching. Aside from daily beatings, starvation and lack of contact they also beat him so hard that they dislocated both his shoulders and fractured both his legs in one beating.

He survived by licking the rancid food and vile water and urine off the floor of his cell. He was left this way for two weeks before they reset his shoulders. There was no treatment for his legs.

I have no doubts that John McCain went through similar treatment as a P.O.W. They are all heroes in my book.

the men and women who lost their lives saving others on 9/11 - these are heroes.

Not all of them! Most of those who died there on 9/11 were murder victims, not heroes! Everyone going into the building to rescue people knowing the danger and those staying inside that tried to save lives were heroes.

For God’s sake.  I am sick of hearing this!  John McCain was a Prisoner of War during Vietnam.  That makes him “unfortunate”, it does NOT make him a hero.

I sincerely respect McCain’s service and honor his valor that earned him the medals mentioned; further, I cannot honestly say that I could have endured the terrible suffering McCain did, that earns him my deepest respect; but if I am not mistaken he also gave aid and comfort to the enemy while in captivity. If my memory serves me correctly about that fact, then he violated his military Oath to only give his name, rank and serial number to the enemy. No matter the reasons for his breaking his oath, no matter how he suffered while in captivity and no matter his other acts of heroism, giving aid and comfort to the enemy must be held against him and weighed in the balance.

Why? Because if our sacred oaths are to have any meaning at all, if we are to avoid confessions while in captivity that might place our troops or fellow prisoners at risk of greater harm, then we must demand that alongside the acts of valor and service, this too must be included in his record and weighed in the balance of whether or not he was a true hero.

Don’t get me wrong, I probably would have told the Gooks everything I knew on the first day, with just the threat of torture and made stuff up to keep from being tortured. As I said I don’t believe I could have suffered the way McCain did, it was truly beyond human endurance.

My only point here is not to attack McCain’s military record or to judge whether or not he was hero; rather I just wanted to make sure that while everyone, as is so often the case here, is attacking Bill Mitchell for honestly expressing his views, that you are just as carefully weighing the full military record of McCain and understand that while you might disagree with Mitchell, he has as much justification to want people to stop calling McCain a hero as those who want to build a monument to McCain as an American hero.

Lastly, I am always amused that so many people that have never risked their lives in battle or in any profession for that matter or served in the military, seem to feel they are better qualified to judge someone’s military record than those that have served and have risked their lives. I think you will discover that among those commenting here that have served and have risked their lives, they can honestly hold opposing views on this matter, without having to attack someone that honestly expressed their own views on the matter.

No matter the age or state of health, for a military man it is always glorious to tilt at windmills, rescue a fair Dulcinea and be a gallant knight in armor in a glorious cause.

Bill Mitchell has inspired me! I don’t write about war hero, John McCain much, because I don’t agree with a lot of the policies that war hero, John McCain stands for. But in the future, thanks to Bill Mitchell, whenever I refer to war hero, John McCain, it will be exactly that: War Hero, John McCain.
As if it were all one word!
Oh, and Bill: Get out your umbrella! I hear the ants are taking a leak!
