Mayor Tells Citizens To Fight Against Crime Wave By Putting On Potato Sacks, Rubbing Ashes On Heads

So much for the separation of church and state.

Struggling to confront a worsening homicide rate, the mayor asked pastors and citizens Friday to don burlap sacks and ashes Friday in an Old Testament-style sign of biblical repentance.

Mayor Larry Langford said his “sackcloth and ashes” rally at Boutwell Auditorium was inspired by the Book of Jonah, where residents of the ancient city of Ninevah wore rough fabric and ashes as a sign of turning away from sin.

A pastor who helped organize the rally said Langford purchased 2,000 burlap bags that will be handed out at the event. . . . Since he took office last year, Langford has held three prayer rallies as a way of addressing crime and violence. Bibles were handed out at one of the events.

“This city needs to humble itself,” said Langford, a professing Christian.

If you’re wondering why the ACLU isn’t mentioned in the article as objecting it’s probably because this guy is a Democrat, though that isn’t mentioned in the article.  As Glenn Reynolds notes, you have to look him up on Wikpedia to find that out.

If this were a Republican mayor the story would have made the New York Times already.

Langford is the Mayor of Birmingham, I can’t even begin to tell you how badly its run.  To give an example, it is in the process of going bankrupt, I mean that in a literal since, they are going to have to file for bankruptcy.  I know it looks bad, but this is actually a good sign.  Maybe they have hit bottom.  Wearing sackcloth was a sign that you knew that you were wrong and were publicly telling everyone that you were going to change.  If this is what he means and they really change, I will be gald to go down there and wear sackcloth with them.

The mayor: “I can’t get crime under control so let’s just blame it all on Jeezus”.

Being liberal is never having to admit you’re wrong

The Seperation issue doesn’t bother me. It’s that, instead of realizing what a douche he is...he says teh CITIZENS need to be humbled. Not that he needs to do his job.

Ditto what Greg said.  Larry Langford is a complete bozo.  This story is the tip of the proverbial iceberg.
