Matt Mechtel, Where Are You?

According to the prognosticators at CQ Politics Earl Pomeroy's seat representing North Dakota in the U.S. House of Representatives is now "safe." Previously Pomeroy had been downgraded by CQ Politics upon the announcement of Republican candidates running for the seat.

CQ is giving the edge to Pomeroy because he has more money than Mechtel, yet as I've pointed out before if Pomeroy weren't so heavily funded by out-of-state interests he and Mechtel would be pretty much neck-and-neck when it comes to fundraising. All that out-of-state cash does still give an edge to Pomeroy, but Mechtel can overcome it. Looking at in-state funding, support from North Dakotans seems about equal for Pomeroy and Mechtel.

The problem is that Mechtel hasn't been out in front of the public much yet. Frankly, since he's been nominated, I haven't heard much of anything from the Mechtel campaign. I am convinced that Matt Mechtel is the better candidate, and that once he presents himself to North Dakota voters that they'll see that as well.

As of right now, however, Mechtel doesn't even have his campaign website set all the way up. The fact that Mechtel has pretty much been able to match Pomeroy in fundraising from actual North Dakotans without having an operational website speaks volumes about the potential for support for his campaign in the state.

If he'd get started on campaigning I think Pomeroy would be in some hot water.

Earl Pomeroy doesn’t represent me, and I believe, he may not even represent the Progressives he purports to represent.  But he does have $912,000 from out-of-state PACs.  But it’s time to get over the money.

It takes a candidate that will put himself out there and take advantage of every misstep of the opponent.

And while we don’t agree with the policy that resulted, we still need to take advantage of the fact he stepped in that trap.

Spoken like a person with no principles.

Yet you’re the one who says that he tries to mix populism with conservatism, as though that were even possible.

And save your breath, because it isn’t.

The war against illegal plunder has been fought since the beginning of the world. But how is… legal plunder to be identified? Quite simply. See if the law takes from some persons what belongs to them, and gives it to other persons to whom it does not belong. See if the law benefits one citizen at the expense of another by doing what the citizen himself cannot do without committing a crime. Then abolish this law without delay … If such a law is not abolished immediately it will spread, multiply and develop into a system.

Right.

But I’ve created a message and I’m sticking to it - which is more important than where the money came from.

You’ve created a conflicted message aimed more at winning a political game than creating sound policy for this country.

You aren’t going to go anywhere with it.

And yes, the money is important.  Not the most important thing, but important none the less.

If ya aint in it to win it get out of the way for those who are.

Where’s your competativeness?

Do you know the difference between Being Right and Being Dead Right?

Being Right doesn’t matter when your dead.

I don’t see this as a game to win.  The goal in all this is not winning, but sound government.

The crap your pushing isn’t sound government, yet you seem to be proud of that.

How do you propose we get sound government without winning elections?  Armed Revolution?

The thing is that the Republicans are already in the majority.  They don’t need gimmicks to stay in the majority, they need to act like the people we elected.

We elected conservatives, so they should behave themselves that way.

Decisions are made not only by those who show up - but by those with a seat at the table.

How you get there within the restraints of the law and the boundries of your own conscience is up to you.

Free: Here’s your false dichotomy.  You propose we can’t win without becoming just like the Dems.  In fact, we have won by being conservative, and to keep winning, we need to be even more conservative.  The people need to know they can come to us for the truth, and so bullshitting like lefties ain’t gonna get it for us.  In the first place, we aren’t as good at it as they are, and in the second place, when we tell the truth, we have the field all to ourselves.  They have nothing, so when we get down to their level, we are placing ourselves at a disadvantage.  When we are our conservative selves, we have a natural advantage.

I find raising the minimum wage unconscionable, and totally at odds with core conservative principles.

It’s a bad move.  Period.

Free, I know you probably won’t get anything out of it because you’re so convinced that you’re right about everything that you’re incapable of listening to other people, but re-read what robert just said a few times.

It will do you some good.

No sir.

The false dichotomy is that we MUST either A) Aquire Power for Power’s sake or B) Subscribe to a Pure Philosophical belief.

There is a middle gound.

It’s too bad you didn’t have a blog in 1997 -the last time the Republicans raise the min. wage.

Here’s the deal: When you are trying to sell the benefits of cutting or eliminating taxes, the truth is on your side! It’s always easier to sell a good product that delivers what it promises.

That the Republicans did something stupid in the past is an argument against my criticism of them doing something stupid now?

Get serious, kid.

No sir.  We acquire power by telling the truth and advocating for what is right.  We lose by playing the other guy’s game.  Can’t make it any more clear.

The min. wage is bound to pass.  The GOP now has a track record of being the party to get it done.

In the process we got the Death Tax cut.  A two-fer.

Principled or not, if something is going to happen, I’ll choose to take credit before choosing to take blame.

I’m about the last one to absolve our Republican leaders of not acting like the conservative Republicans we thought we had elected.  The one thing that is supposed to separate us from the Democrats is our adherence to principle.  Once that basic question is out of the way, then, as the old story goes, it’s only a matter of haggling about the price.

But adhering to principle is just a bit more difficult when the “loyal opposition” keeps removing itself farther and farther away from the center and towards the port side.  After all, what alternative do the American voters really have?  The loony left of Murtha, Pelosi, Reid and Howard Dean?  That’s not any sort of serious. thoughtful opposition.  That’s Rugrats in suits.

Frankly, Free, the Republicans doing this is like when they came out with New Coke.  It was a bad idea, and a miserable failure.  The Dems will play it to their advantage, by accusing the Repubs of pandering, and we will have lost the high ground of truth.  The Dems are two-faced, and we aren’t.  They play that game much better than we ever will.  The things is, we have been winning by being conservative, and now we are abandoning our winning strategy. It will also make it more difficult to cut taxes in the future.  They blew it.

Free: One more thing.  Never forget that the MSM will play it the way the Dems want, will lie for them and misreport everything to make us sound bad and them sound good. All we really have is the truth of our position, and the soundness of our principles.  Those have been good for us since 1994, so, IMO, this is no time for the political equivalent of “New Coke”.
