Matt Mechtel Found Dead From Self-Inflicted Gunshot Wound

I just received word that Matt Mechtel, former Republican candidate for the House, has was found dead from a self-inflicted gun shot wound.
He was apparently found at 11:00am this morning by his father.
What a sad, sad day. I met Matt a couple of times, and had the opportunity to interview him during his campaign. He was a nice man and would have made a great leader for this state.
Update: The Fargo Forum has the story now.
Also, I edited this post to reflect the fact that this may not have been a suicide. Could have been a firearm accident. It doesn’t do anyone any good to jump to conclusions.
I had heard that Matt had hit some rough spots in life after his campaign against Pomeroy. Let’s hope that suicide wasn’t what happened.

What terrible news. I had the pleasure to meet Mr. Mechtel at a candidates forum at UND when he was running for Congress, and he seemed to be a nice, down to earth guy. My condolences to his family and friends.

Matt will be a great loss to many who he has touched over the years. He was a kind sole & so very friendly and a joy to be around. God only knows the pain he had. I feel for all that knew him & who never got a chance to meet such a wonderful person in Matt. Rest in peace.

I met Matt many times… He was always very kind and very generous. He was always quick to make you feel welcome and was always very honest. My condolences to his friends and family. I was shocked to hear the news. I had been thinking of him quite a bit as of late and wondering when I would see him next but I guess that I won’t be seeing him. North Dakota has lost a great man and many of us have lost a great friend.

It’s a shame what politics will do to people’s personal lives sometimes. The rumors and gossip get so vicious that it can ruin people. Matt was a good guy and this is definitely a loss to North Dakota.

Truly a sad day for the Mechtel family. We send out our condolences to family and friends. I had the opportunity to interview him as well on my radio show during his campaign. A very likable and kind person.

What a sad story – I never had the chance to meet him. Most sources are saying it was self-inflicted – I’m assuming that’s confirmed at this point?

This is really sad. I was fortunate enough to meet him a couple times when Mechtel came to the NDSU College Republican meetings and helped on his campaign. He was truly a great guy. My condolences to his family and friends.
