Marines Who Gave Their Lives to Stop Suicide Bomber Awarded Navy Cross

New Year’s Eve is often one for reflection of the year gone by and what it all means. Here’s a story to help put things in perspective:
Marine Corporal Jonathan Yale and Lance Corporal Jordan Haerter were standing guard duty at the main gate to Joint Security Station Nasser in Ramadi. Guard duty is often boring, sometimes thankless. But last April 22nd,the valor and courage of these two Marines was unmistakable. From the LA Times:

The sun had barely risen when the two sentries spotted a 20-foot-long truck headed toward the gate, weaving with increasing speed through the concrete barriers. Two Iraqi police officers assigned to the gate ran for their lives. So did several Iraqi police on the adjacent street.
Yale and Haerter tried to wave off the truck, but it kept coming. They opened fire, Yale with a machine gun, Haerter with an M-16. Their bullets peppered the radiator and windshield. The truck slowed but kept rolling.
A few dozen feet from the gate, the truck exploded. Investigators found that it was loaded with 2,000 pounds of explosives and that its driver, his hand on a “dead-man switch,” was determined to commit suicide and slaughter Marines and Iraqi police.
The thunderous explosion rocked much of Ramadi, interrupting the morning call to prayers from the many mosques. A nearby mosque and a home were flattened. The blast ripped a crater 5 feet deep and 20 feet across into the street.

An investigation by the highest ranking Marine in Iraq, Major General John Kelly, prompted him to nominate both men for the Navy Cross.

When Marine technicians restored a damaged security camera, the images were undeniable.
While Iraqi police fled, Haerter and Yale had never flinched and never stopped firing as the Mercedes truck — the same model used in the Beirut bombing — sped directly toward them.
Without their steadfastness, the truck would probably have penetrated the compound before it exploded, and 50 or more Marines and Iraqis would have been killed. The incident happened in just six seconds.
“No time to talk it over; no time to call the lieutenant; no time to think about their own lives or even the American and Iraqi lives they were protecting,” Kelly said. “More than enough time, however, to do their duty. They never hesitated or tried to escape.”
Kelly nominated the two for the Navy Cross, the second-highest award for combat bravery for Marines and sailors. Even by the standards expected of Marine “grunts,” their bravery was exceptional, Kelly said.

As you think of auld lang syne and the best and the worst of 2008, raise a glass to Marines Haerter and Yale, and say a prayer for their families. They were two of the best!

Chief RZ , I don’t know where they come? from I guess they are persons that just have it in the hearts to defend what is rightfully theirs and others , it is a great tribute to even be a soldier in my opinion I was for three years and was ready . but I never saw combat , it was something I feared but was ready to go and do what I could, it is not to say I am equating myself with the ones that do combat and do heroic things, by no means do I . I think it is just born in the ones that do it . I can only have praise for them and say they are the greatest bunch of people I have ever heard of . May the Lord bless them and keep them safe .

I laud and praise these two men , when I was in the service I got to know men who would have done the same , it is not an exception but the rule among the service men and women to stand their ground and these two did an exceptional job ,may the Lord take a liking to them and may their families find peace in that their sons took their job seriously. Rest in peace soldiers you have performed well .

Despite the rancor we read of every day in our newspapers, or on this site, somehow this great country still produces men like this. It’s worth noting that the one who had most to gain from fleeing, who was going home in a few days, who hardly knew the other guy, and the newly activated marine both acted , in tandem, exactly as they’d been trained to do. Surely ten, or twenty, other Marines are alive this New Years eve because of their actions. Mere words cannot adequately honor what they did but, I’m certain that God will not overlook their devotion to themselves and their fellow Marines. Semper Fidelis

“Smarmy” you say Dino, but I thought we’d all agreed to not write of Barack Obama, Joe Biden, the bad Reverend Wrong, Al Freaken, and Caroline Kennedy, till next year.

If not for these noble defenders of freedom this beautiful planet would decay in the rot of terror and tyranny; the indomitable spirit of Liberty will forever soar in the souls of those who have sacrificed their lives protecting humanity’s precious gift. Their courage is a constant reminder of the value of life lived without fear.

May God comfort their families and fill their lives with love.

Where do we get these men? There is no higher purpose than service to others; who gives his life for another; for his country.

As a former serving Marine, I can tell you that while their are exceptions to any rule, I have served with Marines like this, not called on perhaps to make this kind of sacrifice, but they died all around me, bravely, and they are worthy of honor. But, let us not forget also that so many Marines and others in the military not only died in war with honor, many live among us with broken bodies, some with broken minds and hearts, they too served and that honorably and they all deserve our respect.

My brother, another former serving Marine and Vietnam veteran, due to his injuries in war and the ravages of time will soon leave this world; after three tours in than damn mudhole called Vietnam, winning many decorations. There are so many like him, quietly living honorable lives that also deserve our deepest respect.

Sometimes I suspect you are very mentally ill! Have you ever served in the military or in any occupation placed yourself in harm’s way to protect the lives of others or ever risked anything of irreplaceable value in defense of anyone or anything other than your own self-interests?

These were terribly brave men giving their last full measure of devotion to their country and in defense of innocent civilians and their brothers-in arms. Their lives were examples of great courage and self sacrifice. They were and will always remain heroes, men of honor, men of courage and faithfulness to their duties. They died so people like you, homosexuals, liberals and all Americans alike could enjoy the full blessings of liberty.

True love, not sexual lust or even brotherly love, but true love is wholly selfless and self-sacrificing for the sake of others, seeking not its own ends, but they live for others. I feel sadder for you today than since you first commented here, because, even considering your extremist leftist politics and homosexual militancy, you cannot even stop for a moment and honor people that shed their own blood to keep you free in the great land. Shame on you!

I wonder how many civilian deaths they were responsible for?

Again, Dino shows us his wonderful methodology of having absolutely no facts yet rushing headlong to speculate on what would cast these brave young men in the worst possible light.

Dino: The men and women of the American armed forces have taken an oath, to defend people like you, so that you can be a truly despicable human being in the safety and comfort of your own home.

They were two sheepdogs. They exemplified 1st John 3:16 by protecting their flock.

Either that or pour it in your ear. There’s a clog in there that’s normally a brain on people. Yours is defective.

I wonder how many people Dino has murdered by giving them AIDS…

God Bless these precious, dear young men and their families!
