March For Women’s Lives Photos

INDC Journal has some great photos of the recent March For Women's Lives protest in Washington D.C. Go and have a look, and prepared to be shocked. Many of these protestors are absolute lunatics, as you'll see. Here's an example:

The speeches contained the typical hyperbolic rhetoric, marshalling this crowd of hundreds of thousands to fight the depredations of the "anti-woman" Bush agenda. They singled out administration members by name: Ashcroft, Cheney, and Rumsfeld (Rumsfeld?!), a list capped in one speech by a patronizing, heartfelt appeal to the honorable Colin Powell to forsake his distasteful service amongst the enemy and return to the fold.

One harangue in particular caught my attention, delivered by a fiery, square-built woman with close-cropped blonde hair. It was a screaming, apoplectic treatise on the virtues of "cunt power," that demanded that the nation bow to the authority of the "cunt" and pledge allegiance to the the United "Cunts" of America. "My Cunt 'Tis of Thee," etc., etc. (find that coverage in the WaPo)

At this point, I became a bit disturbed, for the crowd wasn't awkwardly tolerating this obscene and immature rant, rather raising their arms and screaming throaty acceptance of a woman performing second rate porno-schlock, ostensibly as a legitimate representative of one side of a highly divisive and important public issue.

As Bill points out, you're not going to hear that soundbite on the evening news.

Here's my favorite, or least favorite I should say, photo from the protest:

What kind of a mother makes their kid carry a sign like that?

What kind of person forces a woman to have a child who’s internal organs are external?

What kind of person makes a 15 year old raped girl have a back street abortion (and die a week later from the infection) because she’s too ashamed to tell her parents, and she can’t have one legally without their consent?

What kind of American tells a Kuwait woman she’s not allowed access to emergency contraceptive?

One more: One kind of person tells a mother living on $8000 a year with three children that her middle, 11 year old daughter is not allowed to have an abortion; even though the child had no idea (due to lack of sex education) that such a thing would occur.

Remember, the March was to prevent these things from happening. It wasn’t about killing babies. It was about defending the rights and lives of those in this world.  Yes there were fanatics, but there are on both ends.  In such an event you must dive in head first - you must be extreme to grab attention otherwise who’s going to take you seriuosly?

Besides The Black Roots are a spoken word performance group. It’s their duty to go to extremes.  Don’t over analyze the actions of people in the thrill of the moment, because it was easy to get swept into.  Look also at the positive feelings, don’t focus on the negative.

I’d be willing to vote for a law that allowed abortions in the instances of rape, incest or severe medical disfigurement (and I mean severe, not just cosmetic).  Unfortunately, abortions in instances like these account for a tiny minority of the abortions actually performed.  Most abortions are obtained by women who got pregnant unexpectedly and do not want the responsibility of a baby.

Kuwait isn’t America.  While I don’t like to see babies being killed anywhere in the world, my vote doesn’t count there so I’m not going to trouble myself about it.

What kind of a mother allows her 11 year old into a situation where she could get pregnant?  I don’t care how poor this mother is, she has some responsibility.  But if an 11 year old got pregnant then I’d have to say that it probably falls into one the the three categories I mentioned above.  As for sex education, that’s an entirely different issue from abortion.

And what’s the difference if the person on stage screaming “cunt” at the top of her lungs is part of a performance group or is a political activist?  Bottom line, if you act like an ass I’m not going to listen to what you have to say.  Same goes for the anti-abortion activists.

If protests like these were truly about obtaining abortion rights for rape victims and the medically disfigured then I’d be out there marching too.  But they’re not.  They’re about women who don’t want babies killing them to avoid responsibility.  And that, my friend, will never, ever be right no matter how you try and justify it.
