Man Arrested At Obama Rally For Wearing McCain/Palin T-Shirt?

I always hate to second guess the cops in these situations. Even video doesn’t always tell the full story, and usually at these rallies cops are in a difficult enough position as is, but this guy certainly doesn’t seem to have done anything wrong to warrant arrest.

The cameraman says that the guy refused to leave the rally because it’s his first amendment right to wear his t-shirt on a public street during a public rally. And, frankly, I think he’s right. Over the last eight years we’ve seen left-wing protesters carry signs accusing President Bush of murder and war crimes and even burn him in effigy in the streets. But this poor guy can’t even wear a McCain/Palin t-shirt?
And by the way, that this guy had to be removed from a crowd of Obama supporters and the fact that those supporters cheered and chanted at his removal speaks volumes about the vaunted liberal tolerance we’re always told about. Heck, maybe the cops aren’t to blame. Maybe the Obama people would have rioted over some guy with a McCain t-shirt. That still doesn’t make it right.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: With Obama elected, these are dangerous times for free speech in America.

Did the police have the right to order him to leave because of it and then to arrest him? ABSOLUTELY NOT!!!!!!

I’m well aware of what constitutes probable cause and that ain’t it. This was as clear a civil rights violation as I have ever seen.

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — Two former Cedar Rapids school teachers who were arrested at a rally for President Bush and illegally strip searched are rejecting a federal judge’s ruling that reduced their jury awards.

A jury awarded a total of $750,000 to Alice McCabe and Christine Nelson following a trial in June. But, U.S. District Court Judge Linda R. Reade ruled earlier this month that the awards were excessive and lowered the amount to $75,000.

Here is part of it:

Philadelphia Police Sgt. Ray Evers told WND the man, whose name was not released, was arrested for disorderly conduct and public drunkenness.

“He was causing large crowds to form around him,” Evers said, adding that he also “was not listening to police commands.”

“He was asked several times to leave the area,” the sergeant said. “He refused several commands from police to leave the area.”

The tape opens explaining that the man was wearing a McCain T-shirt at a street celebration in honor of president-elect Barack Obama’s election victory.

The audio says police told the man to leave the area and he declined. At that point, the video picks up.

If a public drunk disobeys a peace officer’s order, what is the officer’s duty?
