Man Attempts Shooting Spree At “The Hobbit” Movie Premier, Stopped By Man With A Gun

Mass shootings always get lots of press coverage. But what about mass shootings that are thwarted when a bystander pulls his/her gun and ends it?

That’s exactly what happened in Texas where an off-duty deputy ended an attempted shooting spree at a movie crowded with Tolkein fans looking to see “The Hobbit.”

Police say a gunman, identified as Jesus Manuel Garcia, chased patrons from the nearby China Garden Restaurant into the lobby of the Santikos Mayan 14 movie theater at around 9 p.m. on Sunday. Garcia, an employee of the restaurant, reportedly walked in the establishment looking for a woman.

When the woman, also reportedly a restaurant employee, wasn’t there, Garcia pulled out a gun and attempted to open fire in the restaurant but his weapon jammed.

“It started at the restaurant and then went into the parking lot and then into the movie theater,” Deputy Lou Antu told 1200 WOAI news.

The commotion sent horrified restaurant patrons into the movie theater lobby, but the gunman followed. He again attempted to open fire, and this time his gun didn’t jam. Garcia reportedly shot one man in the chest before Antu says an off-duty sheriff’s deputy working security the theater shot him once, dropping him to the floor.

The deputy was working security, of course, but it could just as easily have been a CCW holder.

Guns save lives.

You are an idiot. So a shooter will have to carry 4 magazines instead of 2 – this accomplishes….what, exactly? A relative novice can change magazines in a couple of seconds, less if he simply drops the empty. And, since most people who believe that so-called “gun-free” zones actually keep guns away (worked real good in CT, didn’t it?) are being trained to be sheep, what’s the odds that anyone would be able to take advantage of that time? (hint: the answer is zero.)

          • xuinkrbin

A decrease in the size of magazines means a decrease in the number of potential Victims before the Shooter must stop and reload, making earlier the point in time where Someone, like the trained off-duty Officer in this case, can maneuver more safely to a better vantage point to “bring down the Shooter”.

Also, Your “gun-free zone” argument would be more valid if the movie theater in this case were such a zone; however, it is not and, consequently, the comparisons are not the same.

          • annieoakley

            Interesting,
So you’re saying that outlawing large gun magazines will inspire criminals to not buy them. Well, that’s great! Why didn’t we think of that before? Let’s outlaw robbery too! That will keep criminals from doing it!
My point is, that if you outlaw guns, or large magazines, or automatic weaponry, criminals, being criminals, will simply break the law, and get them anyway.

          • slackwarerobert

No it will result in more dead children. I don’t want an 8 year old girl forced to reload when they are breaking down the door.

I think the assault weapons ban will be pushed through. I’m also not asking for an outright ban on all guns.

A constitutional amendment to make gun ownership a privilege vs right should be a discussion, but that’s probably a lot to ask.

        • http://sayanythingblog.com Rob

Well of course you’re not against an outright ban of all guns. The prohibitionists learned the lesson of alcohol prohibition well.

Instead, you’re for regulations that make it all but impossible to purchase, possess and carry a gun.

          • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

I’m not. I’m for amending the constitution to make gun ownership a privilege, not a right. Maybe you ought to look up the word ownership?

          • LastBestHope

            Yes they did:

As spelled out in Article V, the Constitution can be amended in one of two ways. First, amendment can take place by a vote of two-thirds of both the House of Representatives and the Senate followed by a ratification of three-fourths of the various state legislatures (ratification by thirty-eight states would be required to ratify an amendment today). This first method of amendment is the only one used to date. Second, the Constitution might be amended by a Convention called for this purpose by two-thirds of the state legislatures, if the Convention’s proposed amendments are later ratified by three-fourths of the state legislatures.

            Go for it.

        • borborygmi

I disagree. Legalize fully automatics. Hell it would be good if you could make them so they couldn’t go semi. Tough to keep on target with a fully auto. It will climb on you.

Technically they are legal, you just have to get a FFL to own one. They are fun to shoot though. I’ve found if I set the selector to full auto, with the right touch, I can still fire three round bursts at a time and stay on target.

If you want to put shivers up your spine I heard a proposal that Homeland Security develop psychological profiles of everyone to catch the “loony” so he can be removed from society. Not that they would abuse that or anything…….

          • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ Proof

Let’s suppose for a moment that you have a particularly slow and retarded child, who may or may not be a threat to himself and others. And for the sake of the discussion, we’ll call him “Hannitized”.

It is no more “gun control” to keep little Hanni away from guns as it is Automobile Control to keep him away from your car keys, or Knife Control to keep him away from your steak knives.

We have laws on the books to keep guns out of the hands of felons, for example. These individuals have forfeited that right through their own actions. We have the right to life, too, but those who commit murder forfeit theirs. We also have the right to liberty, which felons forfeit doing criminal acts.

A law against “strawman purchases”, for example, is not “gun control”, that is to say against the right of an individual to keep and bear arms, but an attempt to curb criminal activities. I define “gun control” as it is commonly used in today’s conversation is that which adversely affects the rights of law abiding citizens, without really addressing the underlying causes of crime and aberrant behavior.

If those on the left really believed that they had the answer to the problem of violence, and not just a means of advancing their gun control agenda, why do they feel they have to lie and misrepresent the guns they want to ban in order to garner support for their measures?

          • slackwarerobert

Not a problem, you shoot the shrink and they won’t say you are nuts. I’ve seen their best shots on “Top Shot” and I have nothing to fear. And? He’s still video taping himself shooting a gun. Lord only knows what he plans to do in private with that video.

            Wow!! A tape of a firearms session…holy sh*t!!!
That’s nothing compared to your public record documenting you’re a tax cheat.

“He’s still video taping himself shooting a gun” Thanks for once again proving that you haven’t a clue what words in the English language mean, Hanni Boo Boo Child. Either that or you get all your exercise jumping to conclusions.

I never said I video taped myself shooting a gun. I said I have a video. One of the other managers had a camera with him and videoed us shooting. He emailed us all a copy when he was done. I think I’ve watched it once.

Now go see if you can pass any of the 800 mirrors in your place without checking yourself out in every one, Tiny Sociopath.

          • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

My bad, Poof. You actually said you video taped you and your managers “cutting loose”. God help us all should that grotesque vision make it’s way to the internet. None of that makes you any less narcissistic.

          • Dave

Your STD infections have taken their toll on what little brain you have.
Proof never said he video taped himself. What he said was
“BTW, I have video of myself, at a range…”
So, as usual, you’re wrong, again. It must be so tiresome to be you.

          • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

Only conservative cowards lie about people, accusing them of having STD’s, when they don’t have them. But you lie about everything, so who would take your word on anything?

          • Dave

You just love all this attention! Proving you’re a liar is quite entertaining. Or is it that you just sleep with filthy women who have STD’s?

Well you clearly you haven’t proven anyone a liar if you aren’t even sure of what the facts are, have you?

The only thing that you have definitively proven is that you don’t know what you are talking about. But that’s to be expected from a coward who stalks others, and lies about them.

            It’s Rethuglican tactics 101.

          • Dave

Your own statements, and public record from the past prove everything I’ve said. You’re a tax cheat, you sleep with filthy, infected women and you take meds for chlamydia. You’re typical scum. Make sure you keep wearing your little hat so your as*hole isn’t showing.

Hannilliterate, you are such a moron. Which part of the word “other” can’t you quite comprehend? Or is it “actually”? Or is it third person pronouns that give you problems? (Or all three?) As in “One of the other managers had a camera with him and videoed us shooting…”

I actually didn’t say I videoed anything, you miserable cretin. If you want to quote me and draw conclusions from what I say, why don’t you try to get it right? Or are you trying and just failing miserably?

Don’t you ever get tired of being wrong, Tiny Fruitcake?

          • slackwarerobert

Well I wouldn’t be putting my sex videos on the internet, but I do have a couple of me reloading some ammo, and of course screwing the non suppressor onto the end of the barrel just to mess with them after the raid. But would love to try and see what my shot group looks like blowing my gun and firing my weapon at the same time.

Or, you can redesign the cartridge. I found a loophole that will look like full auto when you are on the wrong end of the rifle. Yet follows batf regs to the letter. To the soon to be dead guy one trigger pull will empty 30 rounds into him.

          • slackwarerobert

So why were they trying to infringe on his constitutional rights? Congress and the president said you don’t have any right to your day in court anymore, so the only place you can defend your rights now is at the scene of the crime. If you don’t want to get shot, don’t violate peoples rights, or repeal the patriot act. Once I can argue the crime in front of a judge again, I wont have to kill the perp.

          • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

I don’t know what you are talking about. The shooter was having an argument on gun control and then got in a rage and shot the place up.

And good for her because we all remember 94-95…so do the idiot democrats who let Billy C’s worthless ban cost so many of them their jobs for a long time.

And we also remember a list of governors and a LOT of DEMOCRATS telling Oblammo to lay off gun rights, to which he cowered as well he should have seeing that the Dems dont want to lose their power again so quickly.

lastly, if you dont like our RIGHTS then you are free to leave the country.
Personally *I* would like to make the right to SPEAK your mind a privilege and not a right….but I dont see that happening either.

      • tiredofit

There’s a difference between banning guns and regulating them. No criminals or mental patients should have guns. Anyone wanting to use a gun should be trained in an approved course (the NRA provides many) and tested to receive a license. Anyone wanting to purchase a gun should register the purchase and annually register the gun.
This is what we do with automobiles in every state. And in most states we also require liability insurance, which I would also support for firearms.
These would preent no legal, law-abiding American from owning a gun, but would go a long way towards keeping them out of the hands of nuts and psychos.

        • John Doe

Doesnt matter. The votes wont be there..you are banning OR adding more regulation without your slime in chief ignoring the Constitution yet again…which eventually is going to catch up with him…

Dont need to register my guns. If they get stolen I’ll file a goddam police report.

          • tiredofit

The Supreme Court says Obama hasn’t violated the Constitution either with heath care, rendition, targeting Americans, etc. I agree on some and disagree on others, but the track record indicates it won’t catch up to him.

But you are right that the votes aren’t there. That’s why we do advocacy. Votes weren’t there to have women vote, end Jim Crow, legalize marriage between the races, decriminalize marijuana in WA or CO, etc., etc., etc. It’s a democracy where we advocate for things we believe in whether they have the votes or not, and then work to get the votes next year, next decade, next century.

As for you, you may not need to register your guns or your car because you are going to file a police report (for all the good that will do in getting them back. It just prevents you from getting blamed when they kill someone or are used in a crime). But there are plenty of people who get guns by stealing them, buying them illegally, etc. who get away with having them because they don’t need to be registered so cops can’t take them away. Those are the people who walk into bodegas and kill the clerk for $27.

          • http://profiles.google.com/williamdavidtipton wm tipton

Registering guns does absolutely NOTHING for crime, friend…just ask the Canadians who just DROPPED their…..drum roll please…..LONG GUN REGISTRY that cost 2 billion dollars and didnt solve crime at all from what Ive read from government comments up there.

It doesnt matter how well you trace a gun…but the time its traced the crime itself is OVER and most likely the shooter has offed himself too.

Secondly, things WILL catch up with Obama and Holder. It may well be after they are out of the DC, but it WILL happen. Getting reelected just gives Congress 4 more years to harass the crap out of them both and sooner or later the right information will come to light and they both will be busted.

Lastly, this is NOT a democracy where 51% rule with an iron fist…its a Constitutional Republic

          • tiredofit

            Yawn.

          • slackwarerobert

Well the clerk should have shot him when he walked in holding an “assault” weapon in his hands. It isn’t like they pull it out of there pocket and surprise you. But another perfect example of the government killing people. You put a few claymores on the front counter, and blow the sob in half before he even knows what happened.

      • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

What does that have to do with Americans wanting armed security? All you have proven is conceal and carry can get teens killed for criminal mischief. I’m not sure I want that.

        • HG

Of course you don’t, you’re a liberal who doesn’t understand an immediate threat to life posed by armed robbers. They weren’t killed by the way.

          • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

Sure I do, GH. That’s why I said liberals understand that in red states gun ownership is important to those people because it can take police 30mins to get to their home, in the event of an intruder.

But that doesn’t mean it gives you reason to own an AR-15, or that going through an extensive process to get a gun should be discouraged.

I think you are being emotional and selfish.

The teens could have been killed….and for what?

          • guest

Hey, look, it Rob’s pet troll, hanni, coming in for his morning fix for attention.
When will you be surrendering your semi automatic weapons?

          • banjo kid

I agree with Proof on it is fun to shoot them but a semi is more to my liking in a confrontation. also you do not waste as many rounds .I have fired about all autos the Army makes and they are fun to shoot . I do like the gun oops rifle not being empty to quickly , I could have to run around the squad yelling this is my rifle this is my gun .I spent three years in light and heavy weapons and still had to pass a test . geeeeesh!

          • John Doe

I dont think anyone here is talking about FULL AUTO, nimrod.

          • slackwarerobert

Then they aren’t talking about assault weapons since they all shoot full auto by deffinition. I would gladly give up my semi AR and 30 round mags for a full auto m-14 or m-16 with banana mags. Since they have never been used in crimes there should be no objection.

          • HG

For threatening the lives of many innocent citizens.

The only one being emotional and selfish is you. Gun crime has been falling, and you and others with your limited thinking skills and pathetic knowledge of history are seizing and outlier event to push your agenda.

I don’t need a reason to own an AR-15. The teens in question forfeited their pathetic lives when they attempted an armed robbery. Yes, they could have been killed. What’s your point? They CHOSE that path. I thought liberals were pro-choice.

          • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

Police would have asked them to put down their weapons, this guy just shot at a couple teens. I think that’s wrong.

          • slackwarerobert

Then they should have tried robbing a police station. Sucks to be stupid sometimes. Police think they need m-16’s, so there is reason enough for me to need an AR. I would much prefer the m-16 also, but will take what I can get.

          • John Doe

And it happens with ANY type of gun.

AR 15 or a field model shotgun..its IRRELEVANT..

          • slackwarerobert

Just saw an add for a 12 gauge shotgun that looks exactly like an AR15. Is this gun evil, or ok with you? Don’t know how small bird shot would work with the flash suppressor on the muzzle? Maybe it doesn’t go all the way through so it is still a smooth bore inside.

          • slackwarerobert

Then maby they should harass police instead of armed citizens. Then they can get arrested instead. I think you are wrong, police would draw their guns as well.

          • http://proof-proofpositive.blogspot.com/ Proof

“liberals understand that in red states gun ownership is important to those people because it can take police 30mins to get to their home, in the event of an intruder”

So, during the LA riots, that Korean shopkeeper on the roof of his building was in a blue state, in an area the police would not respond to in 30 mins or even necessarily that day. He had a reason to own an AR-15. In fact, that’s what he used. I don’t know if he even needed to fire a shot, or if just the sight of the gun was a sufficient deterrent for arsonists and looters to steer clear.

          • John Doe

            Youre a moron.

          • slackwarerobert

But your 12 gauge wont work on my police armored cars, my AR will. I don’t know if they hired wife killing petersons inlaws on my force. If the police were law abiding then why do they have an internal affairs?

        • John Doe

Clearly you’d prefer they were able to rape and beat a woman to death rather than her being able to shoot and stop them.

        • slackwarerobert

          • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

    • alanstorm

Please define “trained and qualified”, if you can.

You, like most idiots, completely gloss over the fact that it took 20 minutes for the supposedly “trained and qualified” police to arrive. How’d that work out in CT, which has heavy gun regulation?

Sorry to post questions to which you’re not able to respond intelligently, but you brought it up.

      • Hannitized, Proofs obsession

What part of no American is against trained and qualified security protecting Americans?

You’re dumber than usual, on this issue.

        • slackwarerobert

What part of who decides what is trained and qualified can you not understand. The school shooter was better trained and qualified than 99% of NYC cops, he only missed 2/3 of the time, it takes “trained” cops 100 rounds to hit someone twice from 5 feet.

          • tiredofit

That’s ludicrous. The school shooter was only better trained to spray bullets and hit whatever he saw without worrying about the damage.
A well trained person will not shoot if there is a good chance he will hit innocent people. That’s what happened at the Gabby Giffords shooting, where a bystander had a gun but couldn’t risk hurting others.
And there were guards with guns at Columbine.

          • slackwarerobert

And even spraying bullets he was a better shot than nyc cops. They always spray bullets and hit bystanders but are not charged for it. the civilian whit a gun in gifford case was inside safeway so didn’t see what happened, he came out afterwards. He didn’t spray the crowd because he would get charged for anyone he hits. You do not carry a gun to be the police, you carry to protect yourself it is the others responsibility to carry for their own safety, or wait for the meat wagon because police are not there when they are needed.

What rarely ever gets mentioned in the media today is the number of violent crimes prevented by people (civilians) with firearms. Reports I have read indicate that there are several hundred thousand of these events each year and nary a breath of it in the press. Now why do you suppose that might be?

    • alaire

I suppose it’s probably because you just made that up. I like a good fiction story too.

      • Wayne

It’s the biased MSM (and Democrats) that makes stuff up all the time to push the liberal agenda.

        • alaire

Sigh. Well I suppose people believe in pixies, ghosts and unicorns too.

          • Wayne

So you (and many others) can’t admit the obvious. That’s why this country is so screwed up.

What rarely get’s mentioned is how many gun owners whip out their guns and use them when their tempers flare. Or in this case, during a gun control debate: http://www.newstribune.com/news/2012/dec/19/mo-man-gets-mad-barber-shop-shoots-toward-patron/

      • awfulorv

Whipping out their guns is not necessary here in Arizona as many citizens holster them, for all to see, at our local Dairy Queens, Home Depots, Taco Bells, and what have you. Oddly enough I’ll stack our record of violent confrontations, which involve a person packing a gun, in plain sight, with any state. Or maybe we’re just possessed of more common sense than most.

        • $21873027

          Or maybe not.

That’s because it has not happened. The purported blood in the streets when cc laws came into effect, never happened,,same with open carry laws,no blood in the streets.Where is the apology from the anti-gun nuts.

        • $21873027

          It hasn’t happened… yet.

          • slackwarerobert

Because crooks aren’t dumb enough to jump you when you have a gun on your hip. Even trayvon knows that now in whatever hell he wound up in.

          • Zendog

Bad example. Zimmerman;s weapon was concealed. Zimerman protected the world from a Skittles and iced tea attack. He flunked out of a criminal justice class and should not have been allowed to carry a firearm at all because he was obviously incompetent and untrained. He killed an unarmed kid going home. After that he changed his story at least twice to make it Fox-worthy.

        • pippinpippin

Hmm. Wasn’t Arizona the place where a gunmen opened fire and killed several people, including a child and a judge, and gravely injured a congresswoman? I bet there was some blood in the street that day.

          • slackwarerobert

No, that was a political hit because she voted against pelosi for speaker. You can look up the congressional record if you want. Or you can believe the sap they got to do the job, it was a constitutionally protected defenses of his fisrt amendment right of free speech. He said they were controlling his words. You should be more mad they treated her first when the civilians were injured worse.

          • SGOwriter

“A political hit because she voted for Pelosi….” “the sap they got to do the job…” I bet you see black helicopters…..all the time.

          • Zendog

I read your paranoid words but they make no sense.. Blaming the victim for surviving a near fatal shot to the head is total nonsense and demonstrates a lack of compassion that does not bode well for you. CRIMINALS and CRAZY PEOPLE SHOULD NOT BE ALLOWED TO BUY GUNS. PERIOD. If a background check law had been in place at that time, no one would have been shot.

        • safeashouses

NRA monthly magazine has a page dedicated to them every issue…..Age of people fighting back against rogue dem’cats with guns range from pre-teen to 80 yrs old.

Even “moderate” dem’cats must be tired of it………… between 2009 and 2011, gun ownership among Democrats increased by 33% compared to less than 4% for Republicans,
      http://www.gallup.com/poll/150
……….but maybe they just want to go hunting or protect voteing precints?

    • slackwarerobert

It isn’t how many crimes are prevented. It is the threat their dictatorial takeover will be prevented.

    • safe as houses

“several hundred thousand of these events each year” OK. and not one word. Why do you suppose that might be? Oh, the true believer.

    • SGOwriter

Several hundred thousand? I’d love to see the link to the reports you’ve read.

  • borborygmi

Gun Jammed otherwise a mass killing and thank goodness that a security guard took him out. So we are back to the status quo which SAbers are okay with.

    • Guest

Exactly, bad gun manufacturing is what stopped any deaths.

      • slackwarerobert

Or poor maintenance? Maybe he didn’t take care of it and keep it lubed. But that is why I don’t want the 150 round drums, to many jams they are not reliable. I’ll stick with the 30 round banana mags “taped’ together.

    • http://sayanythingblog.com Rob

Yeah, the gun jammed, but he had fixed it one before and murdered somebody.

      You’re making a silly point.

  • Beth

I just want to point out that none of the people that save civilians are carrying AK 47s or other high powered assault weapons. Gun rights are important, but untrained civilians with no need to own don’t need to own high powered assault weapons cause it’s their “right”

    • http://sayanythingblog.com Rob

Actually, it is their right, per the 2nd amendment.

And high power rifles are used in less than 2% of crimes.

    • slackwarerobert

How do you know? There are plenty of homeowners who only had to release the bolt and chamber a round for them to leave. I agree carrying an assault rifle around 24/7 is cumbersome, that is why we need to repeal the assault weapon ban and let us make use of the last 30 years of technology to make useful machine pistols that can be carried 24/7. I would love a 50-75 round 3-4mm automatic for my week side for use in gang attacks when holders people are out wielding. I don’t need an auto for long range, just the 25 feet around me will do nicely.

    • John Doe

A gun is a gun is a gun. A 357 magnum will kill just as fast as an AK will…which ISNT an ‘assault’ weapon, btw.
You are WAY to caught up in cosmetics and comprehend nothing about FUNCTION…

  • patrick2315

Somewhat different circumstances when gunman seeking one individual vs shooting indiscriminately. Also law enforcement versus your knucklehead high school friends. Am always surprised at this argument. Many people shouldn’t even be allowed to drive cars, but you want them to have guns.

    • slackwarerobert

That they can’t drive cars, and the government still gives them a license is all you should need to know that any gun “training” required is also stupid.

    • John Doe

Good point…except that Im betting you arent whining like a spanked girl that they ARE driving…

  • Illinois Smith

How come this story isn’t on cnn.com?

    • http://sayanythingblog.com Rob

Because it doesn’t fit the narrative, duh.

  • Don Quixote

Kennesaw 2011, Murders 0, Rapes 0, Aggravated Assault 12, Robbery 6, Burglary 120, Larceny/Theft 25, Auto Theft 25, Narcotics Violations 176. Population about 21,000. Passed gun law in 1982. Crime may be low but it isn’t nonexistant in Kennesaw.

SigFan, it might be because the “reports” are biased or just plain bogus. I have seen plenty of reports by both the left and right that are anything but objective or scientific. I am very careful as to what I accept as valid.
There were about 1.2 million violent crimes in 2011. Now if there were several hundred thousand crimes prevented (say 400,000) that would mean a total of 1.6 million violent or potentially violent crimes. 1 out of 4 would have been prevented by people with firearms. Does that seem reasonable to you? I doesn’t to me. It may be that these interventions aren’t mentioned because they don’t occur.

But then, I may be too restrictive. If a kid tries to steal a bike and a guy comes out with a gun and scares him away, does that count? And if it does, who is the good guy and who is the bad guy?

    • SigFan

According to the National Self Defense Survey conducted by Florida State
University criminologists in 1994, the rate of Defensive Gun Uses can be
projected nationwide to approximately 2.5 million per year — one Defensive Gun Use every 13 seconds.

Among 15.7% of gun defenders interviewed nationwide during The National Self Defense Survey, the defender believed that someone “almost certainly” would have died had the gun not been used for protection — a life saved by a
privately held gun about once every 1.3 minutes. (In another 14.2% cases, the defender believed someone “probably” would have died if the gun hadn’t been used in defense.)

In 83.5% of these successful gun defenses, the attacker either threatened or
used force first — disproving the myth that having a gun available for defense
      wouldn’t make any difference.

In 91.7% of these incidents the defensive use of a gun did not wound or kill
the criminal attacker (and the gun defense wouldn’t be called “newsworthy” by
newspaper or TV news editors). In 64.2% of these gun-defense cases, the police learned of the defense, which means that the media could also find out and report on them if they chose to.

In 73.4% of these gun-defense incidents, the attacker was a stranger to the
intended victim. (Defenses against a family member or intimate were rare — well under 10%.) This disproves the myth that a gun kept for defense will most likely be used against a family member or someone you love.

In over half of these gun defense incidents, the defender was facing two or
more attackers — and three or more attackers in over a quarter of these cases. (No means of defense other than a firearm — martial arts, pepper spray, or stun guns — gives a potential victim a decent chance of getting away uninjured when facing multiple attackers.)

In 79.7% of these gun defenses, the defender used a concealable handgun. A quarter of the gun defenses occured in places away from the defender’s
      home.

Source: “Armed Resistance to Crime: The Prevalence and Nature of Self-Defense with a Gun,” by Gary Kleck and Marc Gertz, in The Journal of Criminal Law & Criminology, Northwestern University School of Law, Volume 86, Number 1, Fall, 1995

40 years and had to take gun out of holster once. It was a gun free zone as well. I would have loved to send him to his maker but was just to tired to wait around for the cops to give me sh*t about not being the dead person. Tell me when they will attack me and mine, and I won’t carry till then. Besides it is for the feds I carry now, I don’t have a right to my day in court anymore, so must defend my rights on the spot from the one abusing them. When I can argue in front of a judge again, I will let myself be taken into custody.

    • John Doe

In my state you cant use a gun to defend property. So much for that.

Not a single article on any national media circuit! “Man shoots shooter in crowded movie theatre saves up to 40 lives” would be a good article headline.

  • Anonymous

This is why the whole gun laws thing is retarded.

  • longmountain

Saving lives with guns is not part and parcel of the Liberal agenda and talking points – hence you get no coverage by the “lamestream” media.
Best way to combat this? BOYCOTT ALL OF THEIR SPONSORS – send a message to their wallets and pocket books. Write to the sponsors and tell them why.

    • slackwarerobert

Obama will just “invest” in them, remember he was paying them to runb his obamacare commercials, and still is.

  • John Stalvern

    >finishing the article with “Guns save lives”
The dude had every intention to kill people with a gun. He even tried really hard, shooting that one guy!
Sure, a gun stopped him, but then a gun also killed those 20 kids the other week.
You can’t just acknowledge the good and ignore the bad.
What you should say is “Guns save lives. They also take lives. Guns do a lot of things. How about those guns, huh?”

    • slackwarerobert

One person with a gun can kill lots of people, lots of people with guns kills the nut. I don’t care why he wanted to kill people, I don’t care if he was nuts, you kill them before they kill you and there is no problem. Someone dressed in cammo walking down the school hallway holding a rifle should be all the reason you need to shoot them. Hiding under a desk is not the proper response to a killer shooting at you.

  • noblindersonme

as predictable as a daily sunrise , these news stories crop up in these rabid conservative cubbyholes about a citizen ‘preventing’ a crime because he brandished a gun etc etc ,and of course that story gets all the fanfare and hyper ventilated ‘ SEE I TOLD YOO SO ss that the gun lovers can muster.

And I have no doubt that these stories do occur and that they do have some credibility in this gun debate. Yeah ! It does happen !

But truthfully all it does is cheapen this much needed debate about how the guns laws NEED to be modernized! I have read with much consternation on my part how the NRA bally hoos these armed citizen’ saving the day’events and how they say this happens so many thousand times a year . The old urban tale was that every year 2 million was the # of times it happens each year! Well ! Was that ever proved or documented or scrutinized … or as Glenn Beck once said ” the facts or truth REALLY DON’T MATTER , it is the trend of the narrative that gets us on the ‘winning side’!

The ‘fact ‘is that yes indeed the armed private citizen does prevent an occasional ‘crime’ but the actual proof of how often it happens is very dubious!!!!

On the same level I have read that if one does buy a gun to ‘protect etc etc himself or his family etc etc , it is SIX times as likely to have that gun used in a family tragedy instead. Now I don’t know if that is true either !!! No way of really proving that either!

So what has been going on for YEARS is this stupid ignorant runaround. A ‘good’ story about guns gets all the hyperventilated bullshit that the gunnuts NEED to be ballyhooed and by Gawd rub the liberals nose in that story!!!

So a story which is JUST AS RELEVANT about the Grandfather who shot his grandkid by mistake because he thought she was an intruder just can’t be swept away fast enough! There arn’t enough rugs around to sweep stories like that under for you guys! That poor Grand father’s mistake which happenned so close to us in Minnesota and seems to happen far more often than the ‘other story’, just doesn’t fit in your narrow narrative does it! And cut the bullshit about the ‘media’ being the culprit here , maybe the obvious is the real truth and the truth is what you idiots can’t handle. It is probable that we read stories more stories about 9 year old kids shooting their 3 year brother cuz they found dad’s gun , or grand dad horribly shooting his grand kid , or stupid fool shooting his neighbor in the next apartment cuz he was drunkenly playing with it etc … because IT DOES REALLY HAPPEN MORE OFTEN!!!!

( I can prove and document a great many of these family tragedy stories because as stickler for detail I have decided over the course of many years to clip and save these stories of terrible gun stories, and I have found those stories to far outnumber the ‘good ‘ stories. Not wanting those stories to exist, the gunnuts just ‘say the media ‘ just doesn’t report them , which is an accusation without any proof. Why is it then that in my 60+ years I have never heard of friend or relative or neighbor in all my travels who ever used a gun to ‘protect’ themselves? As I said I am sure it does happen but I havn’t heard of it. But I have heard time and again of stories of the near -misses , the laugh- about- it- now stories of guys shooting holes in their pickup, the stories about farm wives finding bullet holes in their kitchen cabinets after deer season , the stories of kids playing around and shooting themselves in the foot. etc etc… )

Be as smug as you all want with your cherry picked feel good gun tales, it proves nothing, but that you only care about you pov and not that every gun incident is a tragedy

Guns save lives ? Does that make you feel better port! Tell that to that grandfather.

    • noblindersonme

and yes this was a good ending to a possibly terrible tragedy in the making . YES I am glad a ‘good guy ‘ disabled a ‘bad guy’ at that movie theater !
If only the real world was that Wayne Lapriere simple!! Do you guys think it will unfold like that every time? Do you think it is possible some hothead, carry and conceal guy sees a hoodied kid just acting stupid and juvenile ( which is what KIDS DO) and decides to plug him at that movie theater? OH sorry! but the kid shouldn’t of been wearing a hoody and being stupid! Sorry but my intentions were good!”
and what if that c&c guy does happen upon a shooting and starts spraying bullets at the ‘bad guy’? You think every average joe will be Roy Rodgers and just be steady and sure and oh-so-calm , he may kill as many innocent bystanders as the ‘bad guy’!
Or don’t you ever think of such things !
Those senarios will happen if the NRA nuts just want these guns to proliferate.
Guns do OCCASIONALLY save lives , yes I know ! and they also take lives in greater abundance When do we face that line of demarcation when our nation says ‘ enough is enough’ It is time to make some changes’!!!
The line was made at Sandy Hook Ct!

      • EqualTime

Not to mention that the first level of change would be to outlaw high capacity magazines, or whatever they’re called. This a**hole did not seem to have a semi automatic.

      • slackwarerobert

So if a couple of people die in a crossfire you must not allow a crossfire to happen, and let everyone die in a direct assault? Only police and criminals spray crowds with gunfire. We are held responsible for where our bullets end up. Yes if that hoody is sitting on my chest bashing my head into the ground, I will shoot him, but it will be a double tap at least. A gun has never hurt anyone, people hurt others though, and a gun will stop them. The second amendment isn’t to protect me from nuts, it is to protect me from government. I can understand how you can’t see the difference with obama up there, but there is a difference.

      • John Doe

You Brady dopes have been prophecying this BS for at least 20 years and it NEVER happens.

Your the brainless sort who’d prefer the opposite, no doubt.

    • slackwarerobert

Don’t forget the biggest myth of all, “Gun goes off while cleaning it” The FIRST thing you do to clean a weapon is unload it, an unloaded weapon will not go off ever. But was the home ok after the shooting, so it did it’s job, that gun owner is dead doesn’t change the reason what the gun was purchased for worked. I purchase them to protect myself and family, and they will always work for that purpose as well. All guns have an anti theft device, you pull on this little lever and the thief changes his mind, or just stops using it altogether.

      Gun Owner Saves Cops Life

      by Shooting Deranged Gunman

So, that’s when Stacy decided to act. Conner may have had excellent
cover against the Officer Means, but Stacy was in a flanking position
that gave him the perfect vantage point. Stacy recalled, “I had a side
view of that man the whole time standing there, and I thought, I’m
fixin’ to put one in him, if I can.”
Stacy raised his gun, fired, and landed one hell of a shot – by his
estimate “a good 165 yards” – with a pistol (we do not know the make or
caliber at this time). Stacy wasn’t even sure if he could make the shot
at that distance: “I hope this magnum bullet’ll hold up, you know, this
distance. And sure enough it did and I hit him in the thigh.”
At that point, Conner returned fire against Stacy with his AR-15. He
missed his shot, luckily, but that gave dead-eye Stacy another
opportunity to pull the trigger. Stacy “hit him again and put three more
in him … The patrolman got two shots in him with that AR-15. And it
seems like he’s all over with, then.”
Conner died on the scene, but if it wasn’t for the aid of Vic Stacy, the
body count might have been a lot higher.
More police arrived on scene an promptly threw Stacy in cuffs, but after
Officer Means cleared up what had happened they released Stacy. Brown
County Sheriff Bobby Grubbs later said, “The citizen that fired these
shots did a tremendous job out there. Had he not had a gun and the
presence of mind to do this, we don’t know what the outcome would’ve
      been.

No, a ccw wouldn’t wait for him to kill someone in front of them. Very misleading story headline. “Cop stand by as people killed once again” would be a better one.
Why did no one have a gun in the chinese restaurant? That would stop him at least one life earlier, and let them save a few cats for the buffet.

  • slackwarerobert

They need to make reporting a failed robbery by “victim being armed” mandatory. I was very upset my stupid thug didn’t report me for having a gun in a gun free zone, and his box cutter not being good enough for the job.

  • Bullwinkle06

The important piece of information is that the person that stopped this was an off duty law enforcement officer who trains frequently to do what he did. Most people that carry (me included) don’t go through the rigorous and frequent training that is needed to be able to do what this man did without getting someone killed.

    • slackwarerobert

Then you need to stop carrying. I train way more than the cops, I train to take out the cops. Once you can handle 3 cops, you can handle these nut jobs without even trying. And a man was killed because the cop didn’t stop him soon enough. The people at the chinese restaurant should have dropped him there.

      • John Doe

        Amen.
$100 says I can do far better than most of the cops on any PD in this country. Ive been shooting for 40 damned years. Ive put bullets thru bullet holes at 225yards….Ive literally shot 4 tacks in 4 shots at 225 yards….I can put 15 out of 15 shots into a 12 circle at 50 with a 2″ snubby revolver. I dont panic under any kind of pressure….and Ive had a LOT of chances in my life to prove that fact.
These dopes like Bullwinkle are living in a fantasy world.

  • tiredofit

You call him a bystander in the lede, but this is a highly trained law officer working a job where he is required to carry a firearm.

There is a huge difference between that and someone who occassionally goes to a firing range being in such a situation like this, and equating the two is irresponsible.

    • John Doe

Sorry pal but gun ENTHUSIASTS are often FAR better at handling a firearm than some fat @@@ security guy who sits on his couch half the day eating donuts.

Just for your Brady pod information…

      • tiredofit

Oh, well, you’ve convinced me by CAPITALIZING ENTHUSIASTS and spelling @@@ out that way.

But I didn’t mention gun ENTHUSiASTS. I talked about folks who occasionally hit a firing range, not ENTHUSIASTS. You’re arguing against a straw man (look it up, pod) which is likely the only way you win arguments.

I grew up with guns in the house, I went hunting into my 20s, I go to the range every once in a while. And one thing I know is that the people I’ve shot with have a hard time hitting a target accurately in controlled, relaxed situations, forget under stress of a crazy man with a gun and the potential to shoot a bunch of six year olds if you miss.

I’m not talking about rookies, I’m talking about GUN ENTHUSIASTS who still suck with their aim.

Yes, there are many people who are better than a fat security guard. But the solution is to train the security guard better, not to give people with even less training, fewer skill and hyper-emotions carry permits.

        • slackwarerobert

So aim for his head, no six year old will be tall enough to get in the way. I think you forget the motivation of living. I would love for them to let us use criminals for training, but don’t hold your breath, even though it solves overcrowding, repeat offenders, and every other prison problem. Do you watch the news, your “trained” cops spray the street with lead hoping something will hit. Your SS goons are drunk rapist idiots who can’t handle a gun properly. They don’t get to use the gun they want and are comfortable with, they are forced to use the gun they tell them to use. I have a left handed officer on my police force, he has to carry a right handed pistol. Even though they make the same pistol left handed it isn’t “approved”. Besides, what criminal is going to risk sticking someone up if 50 armed men will be spraying the entire lobby with bullets?

          • tiredofit

So aim for the head, have it hit a hard metal bolt in the wall, ricochet down and hit the six year old.

And, you are right, we should risk injuring or killing people in the entire lobby just to protect the $37.29 in the register. Because loose change is more important than lives or the tens of thousands of dollars in hospital bills and lost pay recovering from being shot.

          • slackwarerobert

Why would I shoot someone robbing the vendor at the popcorn machine? You carry to protect yourself. You can’t miss something as big as a head, at most you get the eye instead of the bridge of the nose between them. If I wanted to ricochet the shot I would be bouncing it into the thug. I practice for that because you never know when you will need to have the blood evidence say you or they were somewhere else. Or if you have no clear shot because they are using someone for cover. My family isn’t going to end up dead because he is using them as a shield to trick me into disarming so he can kill all of us. After 3 years my 10 year old is almost ready for trick shots now. Obamacare will cover the hospital bills, but I doubt he will need a doctor with a 45 hollow point in his head. A bent penny is worth more than a scum bag.

  • RG

Its hilarious how Brady camp nutjobs seem to think that the only people who can get a gun to function properly and aim right is Cops and Felons.

If youre not a felon you arent capable of firing a gun and hitting your target, apparently.
And if youre not a cop youre just too damned dumb to be able to find the two or three controls to fire the gun at all (in spite of having STATE APPROVED TRAINING, also apparently).

It would seem that in the mind of Brady, there are two types of people who can operate these complex devices….Cops and Felons.
I mean, the rest of us who own guns and have for decades….over 100 MILLION of us….apparently have been thinking that for all that time we’ve been shooting and training that we’re actually hitting something, but we’ve been deluding ourselves and we’ve actually not even been firing our guns at all because we’re just too damned stupid to figure out how to aim and pull that trigger that only ignant @@@ uneducated drug dealing ghetto thugs have any hope of comprehending or operating….

    • slackwarerobert

Well in their defense, that is the way it is in obamas home town in africa. only the crooks have guns, the only difference is who pays them the government or the victim directly. Funny after 30,000 are killed they don’t see a problem with the people being armed. I prefer it the other way around, armed and no one needs to be killed.

  • yeahbutnotreally

His gun jammed in the restaurant, so there were no casualties there. Then he was able to shoot someone in the lobby, before he himself was shot. Offensive Gun 1, Defensive Gun 1.

If none of them had guns, it would be 0-0.

    • slackwarerobert

Or it would be SUV 1 – chinese restaurant door – 0.I don';t care what the score is as long as it end with killer DRT. (dead right there)

  • Natalie

All I see here is a COP/SECURITY guard that did his duty. The one he is trained for. Who is to say that a regular citizen with a gun whom only uses it for hunting/sports would be able to handle the gun with the same skill under the circumstances? Perhaps even missing and getting shot and killed. Or perhaps getting someone else shot. I just can’t see how the solution to a mad person to a gun is another person with a gun, when clearly no guns would have stopped the situation in the first place.

    • slackwarerobert

Obviously no guns didn’t work because the crook had a gun. If all they do is hunt, and can’t hit what they shoot at, then they wouldn’t be carrying a gun in the first place. The solution to any threat be it from a mad man or totally sane criminal is the means to stop it, and a gun does just that. What do you do when the “mad man” is the cop? I have my gun and can stop him as well.

  • Natalie

Also, to those people posting ‘headlines’ of news stories of people ‘defending’ themselves with guns. Sources and links to stories would be better, specially since the article above is so badly titled. Let’s look at the first part: Man attempts shooting spree at the hobbit movie premier (uhm, he started it all in a restaurant and chased after people who went into the cinema..not exactly going for a movie premier as the title is trying to make you believe. It’s obviously trying to be sensationalist and linking it with the previous shooting in the theater. And they say anti-gun people spread propoganda)…Second part : stopped by gun carrying audience member. (Am I wrong to think that it sounds like some random movie goer was carrying a gun and stopped him? Rather than the truth which is the paid for and hired gun carrying professional shot the man.) So can you blame me for not trusting all those other headlines?

  • mcke

No, it couldn’t just as easily been a CCW holder, because a CCW holder is not equivalent to a trained law enforcement officer.

  • Kelly McCune

Yes, presupposing the CCW holder in fact had the same level of training as a sherrif’s deputy and was willing to shoot, it could have been a CCW holder. Alternately the CCW holder could have done what the CCW holder at Clakamas Town Center did last month and hide in a store waiting for the shooter to go away. The theater patrons were lucky there was an off duty cop there. Paid, professional armed security is far more reliable than armed vigilanties.

    • slackwarerobert

How is hiding being an armed vigilante? He did what he is supposed to do, be safe. I am not a cop, I don’t carry to save you. I carry to save myself and my family. If I have to stop them for that and you befitting with him being dead also that is just good for you. Just ask zimmerman, even defending yourself risks your liberty, no way do I risk it for others that have the option to carry themselves also. Or in the case of DC, that choose to obey the law and get killed. I will take my chances with the jury, but will not go out of my way to face them.
Well I do have one thing I won’t hesitate to interfere with and shoot, gang rape, but I will leave a few for the victim to shoot if she wants to.

  • slackwarerobert

commiefornia skools just took delivery of MILITARY weapons in their schools. How can such an anti gun state that doesn’t even allow their citizens to carry a gun justify military weapons?

  • pippinpippin

Hmm. In the restaurant, the gun jammed, saving all those lives.

Then a trained law enforcement official working security– not just someone with a gun, but someone hired specifically for security because he was trained for this– pulled his own gun. What he was hired to do.

This is really not the same as some random guy packing on a night out. No one has a problem with security guards and deputy sheriffs doing their jobs.

I don’t think this proves anything except that public places should hire security.

  • Zendog

The perps gun jammed. It wasn’t High Noon as your headline seems to imply. A baseball bat would have worked as well.

  • runfastandwin

“The deputy was working security, of course, but it could just as easily have been a CCW holder.” Except a CCW would have just as likely shot himself, so no.
